Upeneus tragula[edit]

Hello @Quetzal1964: This edit Special:Diff/1066723011 appears incorrect. The GBIF map is normal for a Lessepsian migrant, appearing widely in the Indian Ocean and a few occurrences in the eastern Mediterranean. I am also uncertain why you are certain it does not occur in the Red Sea, or that it has crossed by ballast water, or why that would disqualify it as a Lessepsian. Invasive Spices The paper quoted does not refer to U. tragula as a Lessepsian migrant, not even by implication. A Lessepian migrant would have to be present in the Gulf of Suez to enter the eastern Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. U. tragula is an eastern Indian Ocean/ Pacific Ocean species, according to the IUCN occurring no farther east than the Andaman Islands. There are other records of species from that part of the Med in the same area of the eastern Indo-Pacific and there are ship-breaking yards there. Ballast water from visiting ships or ships being brought into be scrapped have been considered the most likely source of these widely parapatric distributions. An example is the gastropod Biuve fulvipunctata. “Until recently, records of Upeneus tragula from the Indian Ocean were based on misidentifications of Upeneus heemstrai (Uiblein and Gouws 2014).” Is quoted from the IUCN page. No the paper that was cited does imply that it is a Lessepsian but nothing else. (I had not looked at it.) In any case it is not taken well by the only review I can find^[1] which calls it erroneous. I don't know how we are even listing these. Are all of these as badly cited? If so the entire list ... Invasive Spices (talk) 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Invasive Spices Thank you for that ref, at some point I may use that to review this list. Having worked on this list in the past I know that many of the fish articles are correct, especially for established Lessepsian migrants, but where they are very few records and possible misidentifications then we can't be so sure. I have even seen Lessepsian species myself (Yellowtail barracuda off Cyprus when looking for Green Turtle).Quetzal1964 (talk) 15:43, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
