This is related to Trinity College, Kandy which is a school, debates may occur whether this fit's in wikipedia. Discuss before Deletion. Hakimu (talk) 10:05, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is important that we add names of Alumni that have reached the highest in their field and not armatures. Hakimu (talk) 10:10, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • An easier criterion is to restrict the list to people who have Wikipedia articles. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 18:59, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is a load of rubbish, most of these people aren't even notable!123.255.23.16 (talk) 21:52, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have started a cleanup of the list. I am removing entries that do not link to any other articles on wikipedia. Going to take a break now, will come back later and do more cleanup. ~~ GB fan ~~ talk 01:24, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All of these people are well known and reputed people in Sri Lanka. No need to do any deletions. Anyone who tries to edit this better have knowledge on Trinity and Sri Lanka

(talk): Nothing should be deleted. This is a page for Trinitians and Trinitians only. Most of the information on Wikipedia is open to debate anyway. Therefore GB Fan should not worry too much about the detail. Please move on.

I left a message on BuddhikaD's talk page on 16 March but have had no response. Perhaps he has not logged in. I'm therefore posting an updated version of my message here for discussion and debate. BuddhikD and some anonymous contributors have added some excellent (new) names to the list in the last month or so and this has greatly improved the article. However, I wondered what your sources were for awards of Colours and Lions, etc. I ask because I've just been looking at the TCK official 125th year commemoration volume, 'Glimpses into the Past', and I found a few random inconsistencies with what's been entered on Wiki. For example, there is no record of Rugger Lions for Jan Tissera and Rohan Abeykoon. No record of a Hockey Lion for Gamini Bandaranayake. Also Rajadurai was not a Senior Prefect, it seems. It may be wise to double check this sort of information to avoid any challenges. Just a friendly comment intended to be constructive. On a separate note, some other recent anonymous contributors have been adding a lot of school level achievements against the names of the eminent alumni. I agree that this could be interesting if done in moderation - e.g. 'Trinity Rugger Lion, 1976, Athletics colours 1978' etc., but in some cases the school level descriptions assume a life of their own and dwarf the actual reason for including the person on the list in the first place. I think we risk losing the plot when achievements at the age of 17 can make a person a distinguished alumnus! While achievements in school are significant and important within the relatively narrow confines of Trinity, I am not sure these alone justify treating someone as an eminent alumnus on a (global) Wiki page. So, as a rough rule of thumb, my view is that the information on a person's school achievements should not normally exceed the information which justifies their inclusion as eminent. This is a wiki page listing of eminent Trinitians, not an OBA database. If we focus on quantity rather than quality and list people who would not be regarded as eminent by the world at large, we may unwittingly give the impression that 'in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.' Similar sentiments have been echoed earlier by others on this discussion thread. Another point: some of the individual listings are now long paragraphs - shouldn't these be converted into separate wiki articles which can be accessed via a bluelink? Of course, the editor concerned will have to be sure that the person is truly eminent, otherwise the new article will get deleted for failing the 'notability' tests. Just wondered what everyone's thoughts were on these. Cheers. (Suresh28 (talk) 02:44, 22 March 2011 (UTC)) I should also perhaps try to take a stab at defining what I mean by 'eminent'. I acknowledge that this is a grey area. I should stress that the vast majority of names on the page do qualify, either by virtue of their reputation or the positions they have held. So, if there is doubt, it only relates to a minority of the names. I think the list should include only people at the very top of their career ladders, not people who are on the way to the top. The Ambassador list looks fine as it lists only the Ambassador or the No. 2. The names on the intergovernmental organization list are fine as they currently are (as all the individuals have been permanent staffers). But, orgs like the WB and UN are very large and multi-layered. I personally know of at least 14 other Trinitians who have been (short term) consultants to UN bodies. I don't think non permanent staff/consultants should ever be included. The list of legislators looks fine and objective (although there is too much on the school achievements of Lohan R in my view). The Judges and Senior Counsel lists look uncontroversial to me, although I hope we don't get to a stage of listing every single lawyer, briefless or otherwise. Chiefs of Defence Services - I think we should only list Gen, Lt Gen, Maj Gen, not Brigadiers, Captains and Colonels. Senior Academics - most are OK, but I think we should restrict the list to full profs and assoc. profs at SL and decent international universities, plus arguably senior lecturers at SL and commonwealth universities. Sportsman and Administrators - I think we should only include members of National teams, not Kandy Sports Club etc. Industry and Commerce - we should definitely include statutory directors on the main boards of companies above a minimum size threshold. We might also include statutory directors of large subsidiaries. Just because a company is quoted or is located abroad does not make it a significant company. Journalists - I would personally restrict it to barons, directors and editors-in-chief. I know my views may not meet with approval with all, but I have only the school's reputation in mind. Respice Finem. (Suresh28 (talk) 04:43, 22 March 2011 (UTC))[reply]
I agree totally this isn't an OBA database, and in that regard it's kind of gotten out of hand. It's been a while since I checked this page, and it really does need a cleanup. I'm with you on all the criteria you laid out. Also pilots for SriLankan airlines do not belong here either. Any suggestions on what we do now? Cleaning the page up is going to take a while.
Regarding inconstancies in the various lists, if you have official documents from the school and some information on this page is contradictory, I'd suggest you fix this page and cite the doc you used. If you have the time of course. That's much better than having uncited info. Alternately, maybe we can get the school to publish a list of Ryde Medalists on the official website. --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 16:24, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This has become ridiculos. I agree with what you saying snowolfd4, Suresh28, and hakimu. The OBA should start its own data base if it wants to include all and sundry. The problem is that lots of people want to include their own names. We no longer have people of the caliber of kadirgamar who turned down a lion because he thought he was not good enough. Suresh28, I think you are too liberal in your definition of eminence. i don't think school level achievements should be included at all. The intergovernmental list should not include Herat, Pilapitiya and Vidurupola - they have more time to reach the top. Dassanayake should be moved to heads of government departments as he meets the requirement there. i certainly would not include pilots and every single corporal and cook who took part in the eelam war. senior lecturers should not be included either - they have time to rise up the ladder. Dhanapala has a long para even though there is a wiki article already which could be linked to. Also loads of people can call themselves UN experts and advisors to governments. Ok this has gotten very out of hand. I'm going to start a cleanup of this list. This is the permalink to the version before I started. --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 17:23, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
