Requirements for Adding somebody to this list

[edit]

For the sake of keeping this list restricted to legitimate information, I must set the following requirement, one of two things are required: either a couple words that explain what makes that person noteworthly or a link to a page that explains a person's noteworthyness.

If such an entry doesn't contain the required information then the entry is not worthy of being on this list and hence forth will be removed. I am setting this strict requirement because if unexplained entries are provided, this list will easily be filled with non-informative entries. Please note I will be extremely open minded into accepting many reasons why this person is noteworthy (ex: artists, musicians, authors, company presidents, researchers who have discovered something). But it should be decided in the future exactly what constitutes as the minimum to what makes a person "noteworthy". People who have not contributed to society in some form are currently NOT considered noteworthy. Travisowens@hotmail.com 21:57, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shirley Jackson

[edit]

When did Shirley Jackson live in Rochester? According to her article, she was born and raised in California, educated at Syracuse University, and lived in Vermont as an adult. MK2 05:13, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reply: I have removed her from this list since you brought this issue up almost 5 months ago and nobody has attempted to refute it. Travisowens@hotmail.com 21:59, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comment from 63.118.56.110

[edit]

Looking at the history of this section, it seems there is no rhyme or reason as to what is considered noteworthy. I guess that is the nature of the beast that is Wiki. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 63.118.56.110 (talkcontribs) .

Roughly, if they have an article on Wikipedia, they're considered noteworthy. There are a few exceptions (namely, Henry Lomb) who should have articles but don't yet. Powers 18:41, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Comment

[edit]

A page similar to this one. List of people from San Francisco, is currently under review as an article for deletion, for reasons which would apply to this article as well. I am conducting an RfC on the talk page of the above-mentioned list to determine whether the concensus agrees on keeping such lists or not. Any and all comments are more than welcome. I think the SF article is up for deletion just because it's poor quality, not because the topic isn't wikipedia worthy...see how it's big on baseball players? At least the Rochester article is fairly broad in who's on it. I vote to keep the Rochester article unless the question is raised on more cities. Arwcheek 01:06, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sam Patch

[edit]

Sam Patch died while jumping the falls in Rochester. To say that he lived in or was from Rochester is not really accurate... From what I can tell, he was only in Rochester for about a week (not couting the 5 months frozen in ice in the Genesee River near Charlotte). dspark76 23:24, 7 Jan 2006 (UTC)

FROM rochester

[edit]

From means you were born there. People who grew up elsewhere and later settled in Rochester should not be on this list. Kingturtle (talk) 17:39, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. My wife was born in New Jersey but she's still "from" Pennsylvania. And any list of famous Rochesterians would be ridiculously incomplete without Frederick Douglass. Powers T 20:17, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He's not FROM rochester, though. Kingturtle (talk) 20:29, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In common usage, yes, he was. Not "originally from" but "from", certainly, for a significant portion of his life. Powers T 20:48, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

“List..” vs noteworthiness

[edit]

An editor rev a deletion of Anderson from the list because he passed the threshold for noteworthiness. Contrary to what the first discussion states, noteworthiness is a consideration, but not the only one for this list. Anderson might be notable for his neighborhood. But generally no person noteworthy only on Rochester, should be on this list. Otherwise we’d wind up with a list of all mayors, aldermen, county commissioners, tax collectors, etc., none of whom were noteworthy ‘’’outside’’’ Rochester. The idea of the article is to call attention to people that should be known to people ‘’’outside’’’ Rochester. Like Stephen Douglass, Eastman, etc.

Try to imagine a state list containing every member that has ever been elected to the legislature. Would that make sense? So a state list would contain people that should be known OUTSIDE the state. What we’re discussing here is NOT notability, per se, but SUFFICIENT notability for a particular list, the threshold for which rises with each larger governmental structure. John Auer

[edit]

I have recently updated the page for John Auer, the physician/pharmacologist credited with the discovery of Auer rods. He was born in Rochester and is a worthy contribution to this page. The article on John Auer is linked by his name. Ewhiteh6 (talk) 04:22, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
