Spelling[edit]

Thanks for your work, Gus. However, the spelling of most the lieder titles is wrong; it should follow German spelling rules where only nouns are spelled with a capital letter. Take the first entry: it currently reads Die Schöne Müllerin which redirects to the correctly spelled aricle Die schöne Müllerin. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 06:25, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Understood. But I won't have any time to do it soon. Hopefully someone else will correct it. Thanks. - Gus (T, C) 2010-11-07 14:29Z

Title[edit]

Is the word "composed" in the title really necessary? Similar titles are, e.g. "List of symphonies by ...". -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 07:43, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno. My wild guess is that someone added it in order to avoid confusion with songs in the more usual meaning of (recorded) songs as album tracks, singles, MP3s. Maybe the title should rather be List of art songs by Franz Schubert? The list also contains part songs, but something like List of art and part songs by Franz Schubert would probably be even far more unwieldy than the current title? --Francis Schonken (talk) 10:36, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Why make it more complicated than it needs to be? List of songs by Franz Schubert, the article's original name, would get rid of an unnecessary word, and "song" has a wide enough meaning to cover the subject. BTW, User:Richhoncho's rationale for the move to the current name was: "To accurate reflect title and match similar article". Richhoncho was obviously thinking of the other entries in Category:Lists of songs by songwriters. Yet, I agree with JackofOz that the title of this article would be less awkward without the "composed". At the same time, it must be said that this is not Wikipedia's worst problem. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 12:14, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the support, but what's with the final comment, Michael? It was apparently non-trivial enough for you to get involved, so .... We are not a one-task-at-a-time organisation, where issues are constantly relegated down the list of priorities due to the arrival of more pressing matters. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 22:39, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The final comment tried to convey that I wouldn't man the barricades or engage in lengthy discussions or edit wars in this matter. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:48, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it because it is standard practice to harmonise titles, Every other title member of Category:Lists of songs by songwriters is presently at List of songs composed by XXX. If you decide that this artixle list doesn't belong in that category, or that every other title should be renamed I don't have a problem and would be happy to see such a discussion. This discussion, which is based on Schubert is different and should be treated differently on WP is so wrong for so many reasons. Please discuss. --Richhoncho (talk) 10:49, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
List of songs by Franz Schubert, the current title, is a better fit for WP:CRITERIA than the longer one including "composed". For a currently open discussion about article titles for lists of compositions, see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Classical music#Relisted move request. The third proposal of that discussion would apply to the article title of this list. --Francis Schonken (talk) 10:59, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Only if you ignore consistency. As I said if there is a plan to change all the articles... --Richhoncho (talk) 14:09, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The consistency is without "composed", we don't write article titles like List of solo piano compositions composed by Franz Schubert, List of compositions composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, List of songs and arias composed by Johann Sebastian Bach or List of operas composed by Gaspare Spontini (leave out "composed" and you get bluelinks for each of these). If you don't agree and like an openly discussed plan, join the ongoing discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Classical music#Relisted move request. If you have knowledge of prior discussion or related guidance, please direct us there. --Francis Schonken (talk) 14:23, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Songs from multi-movement works[edit]

Rosamunde[edit]

I would like to add Rosamunde songs such as Hier Auf Den Fluren, D797-7. Please object now or not at all. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 14:00, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's already mentioned at Schubert opus/Deutsch number concordance. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 14:11, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That wont help the reader on this page, and indeed is completely off-topic. Not satisfactory. They are songs and choral works so should be here. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 18:01, 8 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't quite understand the organisation of Schubert's works here at Wikipedia, but Rosamunde is also mentioned at List of compositions by Franz Schubert by genre, which is linked to in this list. I don't think there are any other works for chorus and orchestra listed in this article, so it may be difficult to find spot where D797-7 might fit. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 00:21, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Re. "I don't quite understand the organisation of Schubert's works here at Wikipedia" – List of songs by Franz Schubert follows (to a large extent) the sequence as these songs are printed in the New Schubert Edition, Series III (part songs) and Series IV (Lieder) (for the as yet unpublished volumes 1 and 3 of series III, the Bärenreiter editions of the Deutsch catalogue indicate which part song will be published in which volume). I have no prejudice whether that is a tenable organisation of Wikipedia's list.
For individual songs of larger works two preliminary thoughts:
  1. There are a large number of individual movements of sacred works, cantatas, stage works etc. that could be qualified as part song or Lied. I'd oppose to include every one of such movements as a separate song in this list;
  2. Currently there is List of compositions by Franz Schubert by genre#Song cycles containing part songs – maybe something similar (involving songs of larger works) is possible for the songs list?
Some songs of the larger works were published separately as Lied or part song. I would not oppose sections such as
===Part songs in larger works===
===Songs in larger works===
if such sections contain the part songs and Lieder that were published separately, with a reference to the separate publication, e.g.

  • D 797 (Rosamunde, Op. 26), No. 7: "Shepherd's Choir" ('Hier auf den Fluren')[1]

Liebe schwärmt auf allen Wegen[edit]

Is there any reason why we havent included Liebe schwärmt auf allen Wegen D239? ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 15:23, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See replies above. --Francis Schonken (talk) 15:56, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I will see what I can do but it'll be a long-term project, still hoping to translate the article into Spanish ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 10:15, 15 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding the lyrics' authors?[edit]

Dear All,

? Shouldn't we add the authors of the lyrics, starting with Erlkönig by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe? The book by Dietrich Fiescher-Dieskau: Auf den spuren der Schubert-Lieder mentions all the authors of the lyrics for some 600 Schubert songs. What do you think? Grüss Gott (might Schubert say?), Hansmuller (talk) 15:28, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lovely if I don't have to do it ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:12, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Jesus Christus, unser Heiland"?[edit]

Who may be responsible for the information that Franz Schubert composed a "Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, der den Tod überwand"? Schubert, it's true, set to music a text by Klopstock "Überwunden hat der Herr den Tod" which Klopstock intended to be sung with Luther's melody (in the 18th-century version). Schubert however composed a completely new music with no affinity to the Lutheran hymn ([1]). --Rabanus Flavus (talk) 15:09, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
