Too long![edit]

This article needs to be split into four articles below:

  • List of townlands of County Galway (A-G)
  • List of townlands of County Galway (H-L)
  • List of townlands of County Galway (M-S)
  • List of townlands of County Galway (T-Z)

Leave some comments here as soon as possible. Lamp301 (talk) 17:49, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Breaking the page up would defeat its central purpose of sortability because items would be orphaned from their proper sort positions. For example, if the table at present is sorted by Barony, the townlands of Baunmore and Turoe will both appear in the Barony of Athenry. However, if the table were divided, that would no longer be the case, and the sorting feature would be rendered meaningless. Similarly, the same error would occur for sorting by any of the other column headings. The integrity of the table would be destroyed. — O'Dea 09:29, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So don't provide a sortable table then. Think a little laterally and create even more articles, eg:
  • List of townlands of County Galway (A-G) by Barony
  • List of townlands of County Galway (A-G) by Poor Law Union
Just a thought, as this has taken nearly three minutes to load. - Sitush (talk) 09:13, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But splitting the table would defeat its purpose as explained above. The page loaded in a few seconds for me. Wikipedia sometimes hesitates. — O'Dea (talk) 12:05, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I agree that useful sortable tables should usually NOT be split.--Jax 0677 (talk) 18:08, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A list of c. 4000 is not searchable. I propose dividing it along the more intuative lines of Poor Law Union (Or Barony if you want, I'm not pushed.), yielding a minimum of 6 articles;

  • List of townlands of Ballinasloe, Ballinrobe and Clifden
  • ... of Galway and Glenamaddy
  • ... of Gort and Loughrea
  • ... of Mountbellew and Oughterard
  • ... of Portumna and Roscommon
  • ... of Scariff and Tuam

Of course, this still leads to incredibly long lists, but a list of 700 is better than 4000. I am in no way an expert on this, in fact I know very little, but it's obvious to me that this article needs to be chopped, somehow. Tomásdearg92 (talk) 02:03, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
