Lucernaria[edit]

Lucernarium (sing.) is another word for vespers, with a connection to lux, lucis, the light, which is fading at day's end. What's the connection with Lucernaria? Plural? --Wetman (talk) 23:12, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm don't know, I'm afraid. The genus was named by Otto Friedrich Müller in his 1776 work, the text of which doesn't appear to be on-line. Google isn't being too helpful either. One could speculate that they're reminiscent of candelabra and maybe you get something light-related from that? Potentially a very interesting connection, though. I'd love to know why. OK, scratch that. I've just found an on-line version of the book. It says, concerning L. quadricornis "Corpore elongato tortili, brachiis quatuor dichotomis, apice tentaculatis. In Fuco (f?/s?)accharino." My Latin is very rusty but the first sentence looks like a straightforward description of the animal. I'm not too sure about the second sentence but it doesn't look like an explanation for the name. An later earlier work of his available here in English translation doesn't shed any more light.
