Relation to Henry Clay[edit]

The article states that "contrary to popular belief, this branch of the Clay family is not at all closely related to the famous statesman Henry Clay." In my opinion, the wording is sort of ambiguous: the "not at all" part implies that he is not related to Henry Clay in any way, but then the qualifier "closely" is confusing. Is he not related, or is he a distant relation? I was going to rewrite that part, but I wanted to make sure of the truth. The reference for that part states that Percival Clay, Sr. (who I assume is an ancestor of Gen. Clay) is no relation to Henry Clay. Any help would be much appreciated. No References for critical section[edit]

I did move the references where I thought they should go. Not sure about policy as this is one of the few edits I have made. Here are the references fyi.

Checkpoint Charlie[edit]

Just read this article in a (very respectable) German newspaper http://www.zeit.de/wissen/geschichte/2011-10/jahrestag-checkpoint-charlie/seite-1 which describes Clay as a hardliner and blames him (partially) for almost starting WW3 during the passport crisis at Checkpoint Charlie.

This episode seems to be completely missing from this article, it is not mentioned at all. Thought I would point that out.--132.227.81.67 (talk) 12:54, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Year of Birth[edit]

In Eisenhower in War and Peace, Jean Edward Smith records that Lucius Clay was actually born on April 23, 1898 but changed it to 1897 to get into West Point. "Lucius Clay (West Point Class of 1918) lied about his age as well. In Clay's case he thought he was too young, so he added a year." In the footnote, Smith notes that April 23, 1897 remains Clay's "official" military birth date, but got Clay himself to concede the falsehood.
