Mae Suai SubdistrictMae Suai, Mae Suai – bring it into line with the majority of tambon article names, where dis-ambiguation is required from the District article, replacing the re-direct. relisted --Mike Cline (talk) 13:47, 23 March 2012 (UTC) Petebutt (talk) 22:16, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • There hasn't really been any consensus on how to name tambon articles. Hopefully we may be able to base further decisions on this discussion. I see a few questions that need to be answered:
    1. Should we pre-emptively disambiguate tambon articles? Many tambon share their names, though others, like Mae Suai, are unique.
    2. Should tambon or subdistrict be included in the article title, and if so, which? This would make the title more descriptive, and clearly specify the scope of the article. However others have argued that since the focus of these articles are the settlements rather than their administrative division, the plain name should be used. We previously converted Amphoe Foo to Foo District per WP:USEENGLISH, so subdistrict should probably be preferred over tambon, if the terms are to be used.
    3. For disambiguation purposes, should we use the next-level administrative division (amphoe) or the highest sub-national level (province)? Disambiguating with the province would give the reader a basic idea of where in Thailand the discussed place is, and be in line with what is done in most other countries. However, there are cases in which this is inadequate, and the amphoe will be needed instead. This causes inconsistency.
    4. For tambon which share their name with the containing amphoe, where should the plain name point to? For provinces we point the name to the provincial capital. However, I feel the amphoe is more important than the tambon (or specific settlement) in most cases, and it would be more useful to the reader if we redirected the plain name to the district article.
This boils down to the following choices:
  1. Mae Suai (Since in this case the name isn't used elsewhere. However, the page would need a disambiguation note to Mae Suai District.)
  2. Mae Suai Subdistrict
  3. Tambon Mae Suai
  4. Mae Suai, Mae Suai
  5. Mae Suai Subdistrict, Mae Suai
  6. Tambon Mae Suai, Mae Suai
  7. Mae Suai, Chiang Rai
  8. Mae Suai Subdistrict, Chiang Rai
  9. Tambon Mae Suai, Chiang Rai
  10. Plus, if (2)–(9) is chosen, whether Mae Suai should redirect to the tambon article or Mae Suai District.
It should be noted that none of the above conforms to the usual practice in Thailand, which is to list all cascading super-divisions in address fashion, i.e. Tambon Mae Suai, Amphoe Mae Suai, Changwat Chiang Rai. This, however, seems unwieldy and doesn't conform with Wikipedia's Naming Conventions. --Paul_012 (talk) 06:17, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I actually prefer to include subdistrict as a descriptive term in the title. Leaving it out should be okay only if the tambon is also a standalone settlement, i.e. at least roughly corresponds to a local administration organization's area. For perspective, I won't oppose Mae Suai without subdistrict, but I think Wiang, Mueang Chiang Rai should definitely be Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai as it is not a place on its own but part of Chiang Rai City. As for the disambiguating [, Mae Suai] vs [, Chiang Rai], it does seem using the province name will be inadequate in a lot of cases, so probably should be [, Mae Suai] to avoid confusion. Pre-emptive disambiguation also seems the more practical option, although it shouldn't be needed for well-known places with unique names like Ao Nang. So my opinion is prefer Mae Suai Subdistrict, Mae Suai, although Mae Suai, Mae Suai is acceptable (but Wiang, Mueang Chiang Rai is not). (Paul 012)
  • Question: is there another Mae Suai subdistrict? If not I oppose as the disambiguator would be unnecessary. --RJFF (talk) 16:20, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • In this specific case, no, there is not. There's still the question of cases with duplicate names, though. This may need to be continued elsewhere. --Paul_012 (talk) 02:21, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, of course I keep up my opposition. We don't need to diambiguate an unambiguous title. --RJFF (talk) 13:50, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
