Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Afghanistan)Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice – Unnecessary disambiguation. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 08:08, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 08:43, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Also Islamic religious police is a Wikipedia heading which covers this topic, with pointers to all three of the above plus religious police in many other countries. -- M.boli (talk) 18:27, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Only agency with this exact name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:01, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. This is indeed the only page with such a title. A notice at the top should be perhaps left on top of the page or on the See also section. But the disambiguation appears to be unnecessary. 180app (talk) 18:23, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • What about WP:RECOGNIZABILITY? The title is a name or description of the subject that someone familiar with, although not necessarily an expert in, the subject area will recognize. This title is so generic (and easily confused with at least two similar bodies) and the ministry so obscure, that virtually nobody (not even the keenest watchers of Afghanistan developments) could recognize out of context or without reading the lead sentence. I fail to see what benefit this barebone stripping brings to anyone. No such user (talk) 08:40, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Three semantically same and lexically very similar titles. The names of the Saudia and Gaza ministries are identical in Arabic. (The Afghan one is Pashto, I couldn't check.) The Saudi Arabia article refers in the very first sentence to "similar names and translations in English-language sources." I think No such user describes the problem well. It is unfriendly to Wikipedia readers to remove the DAB page among ambiguously variable titles because this string of letters is not identical to that string of letters. -- M.boli (talk) 13:00, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Not sufficiently recognizable nor differentiable from similar-sounding official units in other countries. Walrasiad (talk) 20:39, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Support. I see the reasoning behind the view to keep the current name, but as others have stated prior, there is no other organisation with the exact name of this article, as all other examples provided are referred to as a "committee", and not a "ministry". I would definitely recommend that that a disambiguation hatnote be added if this article is renamed. At the very least I would suggest that the current disambiguation page at the move target be renamed to Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice since there are more articles with that name. 58.107.92.93 (talk) 15:45, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There already is a DAB page: Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. There are also a bunch of redirect pages on variations of this name, most of which redirect to Saudia Arabia. The name you suggest (I fixed the typo which made it a red-link) redirects to the DAB page just mentioned. -- M.boli (talk) 20:52, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I never like using WP:SMALLDETAILS like "Committee" v. "Ministry" to disambiguate governmental departments. Best to use the country-based disambiguation. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 01:54, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
