Speedy Deletion[edit]

This article as been tagged for speedy deletion by Ktr101 on the grounds that "One event, he is not really all that notable outside of his death sentence. If some link to a famous person or something big comes up, this can be kept." A tag for "this person has recently died" was also added. I removed that as Valian is still alive hamdullah.

I created the stub and hereby defend it. Mohammad Amin Valian is noteworthy because of the case he is involved in and the crime - moharebeh - he is alleged to have committed. The protest he is involved in - 2009 Iranian election protests - are the biggest protests in the history of the Islamic Republic, but the crime he is being accused of - moharebeh - is big news. So far as I know he is the only person ever accused of waging war on god for throwing stones in a political demonstration at paramilitaries or police.

The "this person has recently died" is not only untrue but part of the problem. Valian may become much more famous as he becomes a cause celebre among Iranians. He may be able to appeal his sentence and the regime back down. He may be executed and in doiong so cause a great public outcry.

I am not a deletionist and I resent being called that. This article wasn't even tagged for speedy deletion, as I PRODed it. The PROD template just suggests that if the article isn't fixed in seven days, it will likely be deleted. I am usually the one who would keep this article, but I don't find it meeting the criteria for notability. Since Wikipedia isn't a crystal ball, we don't keep pages with the assumption that they might become important post mortem. If you can find sources for him being the only person to wage war on god by throwing stones, put them in the article and I might reconsider. Alright, I'm sorry I called you a deletionist. The phrase (in quotes) "Mohammad Amin Valian" gets 154,000 hits on google. Most of those are on pages about the demonstrations in Iran and the regime's reaction to them, and the pages often only mention him in passing, saying that he's 20-year-old student. Surely a short article on him would be useful to wikip users. It is true as you say that wiki isn't a crystal ball, it seems extremely likely that interest in him will grow if the regime executes him or if it backs down and does not. --BoogaLouie (talk) 21:37, 10 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
