Focus on Somalia and Greater Somalia[edit]

The article has an unwarranted focus on the connections between NE Province and Greater Somalia. It also includes misinformation that advances a specific political viewpoint regarding this region and whether it should be part of Kenya or Somalia.

1. The NE Province was not co-terminous with the Northern Frontier District (NFD). The NFD included Marsabit county; the NE Province did not.
2. The name of the province is given in Somali but not Kiswahili, but Kiswahili is the other official language (with English) of Kenya. At best, the name should be given in both Somali and Swahili; in reality, no other province pages give names in non-official languages (e.g., Nyanza is not given in Dholuo, despite Dholuo being the primary language spoken there).
3. "The North Eastern Province territory was carved out of the present-day southern Somalia during the colonial period". This statement is intentionally misleading and is sourced from a political platform promoting the idea of Greater Somalia. British East Africa included the NFD (NE Province) for, with some small exceptions, the entirety of the colonial period. "Carved out" implies that the British removed part of an entity that already existed; in truth, they ceded northern Jubaland to Italian Somaliland -- as the article's own sources show -- in 1925. Rather than carving it out, the British already controlled this particular slice land.
4. "It is and has historically been exclusively inhabited by ethnic Somalis." This statement needs to a caveat, as the region has not been exclusively inhabited by Somalis, historically. It has been primarily inhabited by Somalis in the modern era, but the statement makes it sound as if Somalis are indigenous to the region. They are not.
5. "The Somalis who live in North Eastern Province of Greater Somalia in the present day Kenya are close to Three Million". The reference to Greater Somalia here is unnecessary and politically motivated.
6. The entire history section of the article is focused from 1925 to 1967. This is an important period, needless to say, but it seems convenient to focus on this period if one wishes to advance the cause of Somali nationalism.

Districts[edit]

The article contains a list of "Districts after 2007". should there not be a note somewhere that these new districts have been ruled illegal by the High Court, and that legally, Northeastern Province has only the three districts contained in the first list? Kaskazini Mashariki[edit]

The official name of the region is the North Eastern Province (c.f. [2]); previously, it was known as the Northern Frontier District. The NEP is principally inhabited by Somali speakers, and the native name for the region is Woqooyi Bari [3]. Middayexpress (talk) 12:18, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name of Province[edit]

Can anyone explain what language has been used in brackets behind the Somali name of the province? It looks like Amharic to me, but why add the name of this region in Amharic?
