Translations and transliterations[edit]

An interesting discussion on this article is ongoing in the Malayalam Wiki Talk page of the Malayalam version of this article. The discussion initially commenced with the article's title's translation into the Malayalam language which was resisted pleading for the retention of the original Tamil title. However, those who advocated for retaining the Tamil title of the article chose not to translate from Tamil to Malayalam directly but chose to do so from English to Malayalam for some inexplicable reason. However, the consensus that emerged was to continue this discussion on the article's English page which was reasoned to be beneficial for both the Tamil and Malayalam Wikipedians to engage and hence the forum of this discussion is shifted here. The following questions are placed for discussion in this forum.

- The original Tamil article was titled "Padal Petra Thalangal" which eventually was renamed "Thevaara Thiruththalangal" whereas its English version continues with the title "Padal Petra Sthalam" (it may be noted that "Thalangal" in Tamil denoting plural of the term "Thalam" was not only translated to English as "Sthalam" which is the Malayalam word equivalent to "Thalam" and is in the singular form. Nobody knows the reason why singular form is used when we are talking about 276 places of worship falling under this category, that too deviating from the verbatim Tamil to English translation.

- Since the English language has no equivalent letter or syllable corresponding to ற்ற in the Tamil language or its Malayalam equivalent റ്റ, it is only natural that one would go by its pronunciation which is closer to "tra" which is why the word "Petra" is found in the English title. Anyone with this understanding would naturally agree not to piggyback the English title for the Malayalam article on the same subject but would have preferred the direct Tamil to Malayalam translation where some corresponding letters/syllables are unavailable in English.

It is in this context that this discussion is considered necessary to sort out the inconsistencies. I would like to invite @Irshadpp: who recommended this forum for the discussion, and @Ajeeshkumar4u: who joined the issue on the Malayalam Wiki discussion page, @பா.ஜம்புலிங்கம்: who contributed to the Tamil and English versions of this article and @Manojk, Sriveenkat, Arularasan. G, Gnoeee, Netha Hussain, தமிழ்க்குரிசில், Sridhar G, Neechalkaran, பிரயாணி, Akbarali, and Vis M:, who remain the Tamil-Malayalam Community Collaboration participants and are, therefore, relevant. In malayalam article, discussion was as follows;

Article created with title of "Paadal petra sthalam" (പാടൽ പെട്ര സ്ഥലം)
Once it was renamed as സ്തുതിക്കപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ (Lit: Sung places), it was challenged by me as a name should not be translated to another language.
Pronunciation of Tamil letter "ற்ற", is normally "tra" in English language (example: Vetrimaaran). In this regards, intervention of Tamil language users would be helpful.
Usage of "Sthalam" (place) or "Sthalangal" (places) is still debatable,
- As this term is an honorific adjective; it can remain singular. or,
- To match with Title in Tamil article, we may use "thalangal" or "sthalangal"
