Pantip's reason for success[edit]

While it's true that fake cds and dvds are sold at Pantip it is stretching it to say that it's the major reason for the popularity of Pantip. There are indeed about a dozen small shops selling these items and a varying bunch of pests who linger and hound people for "sexy" videos it is easy to see that it represents a tiny fraction of the amount of business takignplace at Pantip. There are hundred of stores and thousands of people shopping there each day and most of them seem to be mostly interested in buying hardware cheap. From the western tourist's (farlang) point of view it may seem the only reason to go there is to buy these discs. But having been here for more than 4 years and shopped at Pantip many dozens of times I can say that most poeple don't got there for that reason. Indeed there are dozens of other places around Bangkok to get this same fake merchandise and some places are cheaper than Pantip. In Bang Moh you can buy these discs for 80 baht compared to 100 or over at Pantip. Kao San Rd. is another place familiar mostly to tourists but any of these places are by no means secret and are as busy or busier than Pantip.

Probably of more concern at Pantip is that there is also quite an array of fake hardware and blank dvd media, and these items leave the unsuspecting tourists at a loss when they return to their home country and find the item is Chinese made garbage. In general prices at Pantip are not any better than best-deal retaillers in the USA or online sellers on eBay or other bargain sites.

I don't know how you can verify this information except by going to visit Pantip yourself but in the original article it makes a claim that pirate material is the major reason for success of Pantip and that is not verifiable nor even reasonably accurate, though one might get that impression in an excited single visit.

Pantip's success has less to do with pirate material than with the huge collection of competitive sellers in one location. There is nowhere else in Bangkok where prices are as low or comparable to internationally competitive pricing.

In my opinion the original article expresses a point of view that is unverifiable and from my experience also incorrect.

Added Food section[edit]

In 17 years of living nearby Pantip I've seen way too many tourists walking past Pantip's food offerings which is very sad because it has actually some of the best food courts in this area of Bangkok (all around the giant block which encompasses Pantip, Platinum, Central World, Paragon and the Siams). Opinions are subjective but I've polled many expats over the years and they tend to agree, and the rush speaks for itself. It's a great food destination in itself, which does not get mentioned often when Pantip gets discussed. All in all Pantip is a great experience and should be included in any serious visit to Bangkok. --expatfoodie

Ref. remark above by Expatfoodie. I have a suggestion. I last visited Pantip in Nov 2006. I had difficulty in ordering what I would have liked because labels were in Thai. Please add English versions also if you want to attract expat crowd.
