Affinage[edit]

The French word affinage is used twice within this article this isn't surprising of course but since the rest of the text is English I suggest that is changed to refining or finishing.Shropman 14:12, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

a case of case[edit]

On 14 January 2012‎, User:Bibi Saint-Pol moved Pont-l'Évêque (cheese) to Pont-l'évêque (cheese), claiming that this is the "correct case".

I'd like an explanation for that. The E is uppercase in the name of the cheese's home town, and throughout the article. —Tamfang (talk) 08:16, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - well spotted, good faith RM, but a case of the en.wp article lackings refs (with all respect to Smb1001 who created this as an excellent article in 2005), I've just added a reflist template and 4 refs. 3 from recent regional Le Petit Futé guides, one from a French dairy manual. This has been an appelation (AOC) since 1972, and although as the article lede says "originally manufactured in the area around the commune of Pont-l'Évêque," the actual cheese now is counted as a cheese type "fromage Pont-l'évêque" = "Bishop's bridge cheese" which may seem odd to us, but nevertheless is correct. Usage in English sources tends to the incorrect, and the more accurate sources like Leanne Kitchen The Dairy 2008 (added as ref 1) are the minority. I hope we're not going to collect Supports saying "en.wp's job is to faithfully reproduce outdated material, errors and mistakes in English sources!" but I suppose it depends what one's view of the purpose of a volunteer encyclopedia is. If this is an article written by/for readers who actually care about French cheeses I suspect most would want to have the correct French name. Support, per Michelson's Cheese: Exploring Taste and Tradition, Fletche's Cheese & Wine, and Fischer's Cheese: Identification, Classification, Utilization. See also WP:CAPS: "Do not capitalize the second or subsequent words in an article title, unless the title is a proper noun." I don't see anything that distinguishes this case from that of other kinds of cheese. The French have no consistency on this issue. Le Monde and Paris Normandie lower case not only this subject, but also Camembert. Meanwhile, France Soir upper cases both. Kauffner (talk) 08:28, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One instance of a France Soir web snippet having copied capitalised "Évêque" from a mistake in a Greenpeace press-release does not = "The French have no consistency."
