Royal Scots[edit]

The article on the Royal Scots says they were formed for French service during the exile of Charles II and placed on the English establishment following the Restoration. Which would mean they were not part of the Scottish Army. Opera hat (talk) 00:10, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This blog piece The Royal Scots ~~ some thoughts (4 September 2011) (an unreliable source) is worth reading as a context piece.

It took me a bit of Googleing to find a reliable source on this issue because some sources mix up British and English. However I found one:

It seems that it recruited Scotsmen, but was an English Regiment (best thought of as the equivalent today of the Gurkhas or the the Royal Irish Regiment recruiting from within the Republic of Ireland)

The explanation of how this can be so is here:

Royal Scots greys (1840), Historical record of the Royal regiment of Scots dragoons: now the Second, or Royal North British dragoons, commonly called the Scots greys, to 1839, p. 56–57

This board gave precedence to the English regiments, and the Scots and Irish were only allowed to take rank in the English army from the date of their arrival in England; or the date when they were first placed on the English establishment. There being three regiments of English regiments of English dragoons raised previous to 1688 when the Royal Scots Dragoons were first placed upon the English establishment, this regiment, consequently, obtained the rank as fourth Dragoons only. But in 1713 Queen Anne ordered another board of general officers to assemble to decide upon rank the rank of several newly-raised regiments, proof was adduced that the Royal Scots Dragoons crossed the border and entered England in June 1685 when there was only One regiment of dragoons on the English establishment. This was taken into consideration and after some delay the Scots Greys obtained the rank of Second Dragoons.

Given the ranking of the regiment in the British Army, the British Army Museum source, and the explanation in the second source how senior regiments got their ranking (the Greys of course are a different regiment (horse not foot) but the explanation is a general one), I think that combined they explain that the Royal Scots were an English Regiment before they were a British regiment. -- PBS (talk) 21:51, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
