Request for comment - Greenwich University article[edit]

There is currently a little dispute going on on the Greenwich University article. In my view the article should #REDIRECT to the University of Greenwich article, but instead it details a little heard of Australian scam which tried to offer fake degrees at one time. I'd really appreciate your comments on this issue, please post them at Talk:Greenwich University. Thanks.

I agree. As an alumni of the real University of Greenwich I'm not please to find a fake?, university in it's place. Wikipedia should not support name piracy. Perhaps 'Greenwich University' should take us to a disambiguation page from where people can navigate to the real university, or to the other one that seems to keep relocating to different countries, presumably jurisdictions where it is able to grant degrees without much oversight. 83.67.149.60 (talk) 22:38, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Connor 2010.[reply]

History[edit]

Woolwich Polytechnic and Thames Polytechnic both redirect here but aren't mentioned. It would be useful to have a section on the history of the institution. I would write it but I don't know anything about the Univeristy of Greenwich.--Philbarker 15:26, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

University ratings[edit]

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Honorary graduates and alumni from validated courses[edit]

I've removed Doreen Bird from the list of alumni for the second time, as she was only granted an honorary degree, and never studied at Greenwich. Since all Universities give honorary degrees to famous individuals, it seems pointless including them in lists of alumni, as this would make every University alumni list seem more starry than it really is. If, for example, we listed Nelson Mandela as an alumnus for every insitution that he received an honorary degree from, then it would look like he had spent most of his life studying in universities around the world. The fact that Doreen Bird worked with Greenwich does not change the fact that she was only an honorary graudate, and if her relationship with Greenwich University is important enough to warrant a mention, then it should be mentioned in the main body of the article. Personally I am not sure that she does warrant such a mention, as we do not list prominent teachers in the University (not even those who were directly employed by the University). Again, such a list seems pointless and would invite endless additions, as all Universities employ notable people (to become a Professor, for example, you are required to be notable in your field).

I am also not at all sure about the addition of alumni from validated courses, who never studied at Greenwich University. Surely the place for such alumni is in the alumni list of the college in which they actually studied. Otherwise all Rose Bruford College alumni should be listed under Manchester University, despite the fact that Manchester University is not an acting school, and so on. Again, I think that in these cases people can have a degree validated by an institution that they never studied at, and are really alumni of another institution.

Only to say that you are absolutely right. It would be clearly wrong to list Jimmy Carter as an alumnus of the University of Oxford. I don't know how Doreen Bird was connected with the University, but it looks like she was in some way connected with the provision of a course leading to a Greenwich degree. By all means mention this if it is appropriate.
I don't know precisely how a validated course works but I am tempted to say you are also right about this. Anyone holding a Council for National Academic Awards degree would be listed as an alumnus/-a of the institution that provided the course, hence Paul Conneally and Oxford Polytechnic.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 17:47, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Major campus location errors[edit]

The three University of Greenwich campuses are in Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway.

There has never been one called Thames Gateway although all three are in it.

New Chancellor - January 2008[edit]

Lord Holme is no longer Chancellor of the University of Greenwich

Lord Hart of Chilton was appointed in January 2008.

Partner Colleges[edit]

Although the University of Greenwich has links with Doreen Bird College there is little mention of the university's partner FE colleges. Only Bexley and North West College are named.

The other partners colleges are Orpington College, Canterbury College, Hadlow College, Greenwich Community College, Bromley College, Lewisham College, West Kent College, the Academy of Live & Recorded Arts, and the European School of Osteopathy.

'Second oldest polytechnic'[edit]
