The predecessor of the school, Tama Teikoku Art School (多摩帝国美術学校, Tama Teikoku Bijutsu Gakkō) was founded in 1935 as a spinoff from Teikoku Art School (帝国美術学校, Teikoku Bijutsu Gakkō; meaning "imperial art school") which became Musashino Art University in 1962. Tama-bi was chartered as a junior college in 1950 and was re-established as a four-year college in 1953. It is known as one of Japan's leading art universities.
