talanas is an English progressive metal band from London, England formed by ex-members of industrial metal band, interlock.

Biography[edit]

Formation[edit]

The band formed in 2008 as a two-piece by singer / guitarist Hal Sinden and drummer Joe Butterworth of interlock "... with the express intention of writing some face value, no-nonsense metal that might challenge us in some way." and to "... move away from the restrictions of playing to strictly programmed electronic backing & arrangements." [1]. When Interlock (band) split in September 2008, talanas became a full-time band and recruited further members.

Death Metal Rooster[edit]

In January 2010, guitarist Ewan Parry re-posted an existent video on YouTube of a rooster with an extremely long call, but adding material by talanas. The video has since had over 3 million views [2] and has featured internationally on blogs, webcasts [3] & TV shows, including Daniel Tosh on Comedy Central who (ignoring the band's published interviews, MySpace and YouTube content) commented on the band's apparent lack of presence, saying: "... Talanas could also make the claim that they might be the most awesome band in history" [4].

Musical Style[edit]

The band have been described as having a "newfound, progressive death metal style" [5] which singer Hal Sinden has been quoted to explain: "... Ewan Parry (our guitarist) has certainly cemented his role as a major writer, he's come in and totally re-awakened my love of Akercocke and more prog-based acts", adding also in reference to the vocal style: "I’ve been listening to an obscene amount of David Sylvian at the moment, he’s a huge influence on me vocally.". [6]

Lyrical Themes[edit]

Current songs by talanas feature lyrics revolving around sadistic relationships, death & disease. The band's lyrcist, Hal Sinden, has confirmed recent influences for talanas songs as including the works of the Marquis de Sade, Aleister Crowley & Aeschylus.

Discography[edit]
