Totota is centrally located within Liberia and is the second largest city in Bong County with a population between 5,000 and 8,000 depending upon the season. The paved road from Monrovia to Gbarnga (the largest city in Bong County) passes through Totota keeping Totota alive with activity day and night. Totota has several high schools, orphanages and clinics that serve the surrounding area. Wednesday is market day in Totota.

Origin of name[edit]

Des Moines takes its name from Fort Des Moines (1843–46), which was named for the Des Moines River. The French "des Moines" (pronounced [demwan] ) translates literally to either "monks" or

History Totota is important based on the followings and more: Totota is centrally located. It connects people from the followings counties: Grand Bassa, Margibi, and Gbarpolu. The only zoo that was found in Liberia was build in Totota on the Tubman Estate. During the Civil Crisis, Totota served as host for internally displaced people from counties mentioned about among others. The City of Des Moines traces its origins to May 1843, when Captain James Allen supervised the construction of a fort on the site where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers merge. Des Moines is located at 41°35′27″N 93°37′15″W / 41.59083°N 93.62083°W / 41.59083; -93.62083 (41.590939, −93.620866).[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 77.2 square miles (200.1 km²), of which, 75.8 square miles (196.3 km²) of it is land and 1.5 square miles (3.8 km²) of it (1.88%) is water.

Under the Köppen climate classification, Monrovia features a tropical monsoon climate. During the course of the year Monrovia sees a copious amount of precipitation. Monrovia averages 5,140 mm (202.3 in.) of rain per year. The climate features a wet season and a dry season, but precipitation is seen even during the dry season. Temperatures remain constant throughout the year averaging around 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit).
