Re Sega Genesis discussion[edit]

Bobert, despite your good faith and civility in the Sega Genesis talk page discussion, as a new, inexperienced editor, you are unarmed in those kinds of discussions. The Sega Genesis naming debate was a contentious one, and the editors involved are still emotional and on edge about it. If you haven't read it, its a good treatise on how to resolve difficult issues. Your questions were perfectly logical from an outsiders point of view and its regretable that the discussion evolved the way it did. My advice to you is to stand back and spend some time reading the communities policies, guidelines and manuals of style. Make some routine edits on articles you are interested in, participate in some routine talk page discussions. In the early stages of your growth as a productive WP editor, avoid contentious debates. Its unwise to venture among the sharks without a shark cage, and you don't have one yet. I value every editor's contributions and want to encourage you to become proficient at contributing to the project. If you have any questions about policies, guidelines or just how to do something, don't hesitate to ask me on my talk page. I will answer on yours. Start working on something you are passionate about. Stay away from controversy, above all stay civil when others aren't and happy editing.--Mike Cline (talk) 01:29, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bobert, although coming to your defense in Sega discussion might seem right, it would just add fuel to the fire. Making anything personal in a WP discussion, other than praise, is a no-win situation. Even if others did treat you unfairly from your perspective, you shouldn't be concerned as a new editor. You stepped into a contentious debate unprepared. That happens alot to new editors. As I said above, stay away from controversy in the beginning. Learn how to participate productively in the community by making routine edits to everyday articles. Create an article from scratch on a topic you are passionate about. If you are operating within the norms of the community, and some members of the community treat you in an uncivil manner, others in the community will come to your defense. Get your edit count up to ~500, learn the ropes, there are plenty other editors here to help you, including me. Remember, WP is a work in progress and there is no deadline. We want you here for the long-term contributing to this project. --Mike Cline (talk) 15:12, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know, I am going to extricate myself from this and again thank-you for helping me. I except what others are saying there but it's not right that someone is now deleting my contributions to the talk page and is insisting that I am a troll even though I haven't done anything wrong except say that I disagree with them. Thank-you again.Bobert902101 (talk) 15:16, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
FYI: I did not accuse you of trolling. I said " if you are indeed a non-sock and if you believe that you are not trolling - then..."...followed by some very civil advice on what you should do if you are a well-meaning editor who has some brand new information. (Specifically: Information so compelling that it might sway the opinions of 15 editors after we've already been discussing it for a solid month.) Continuing to try to overturn this already-settled issue on the basis of facts and opinions that have already been widely debated would certainly be considered trolling - so I had to warn you not to do that. This issue is now closed (formally - by an admin) - and without new information that would be dramatic enough to overturn an awful lot of peoples' ingrained decisions (recall that 15:3 consensus), it is extremely disruptive to reopen it without an exceedingly good (and above all, new) reason.
That said, it's not impossible that there is some new information out there - some devastatingly compelling argument. Soon after the previous ("Sega Genesis and Mega Drive") title was agreed upon, it was realized that this title was probably not acceptable under WP:TITLE and the naming debate had to be re-opened (with the results you see now). That was a new twist that had not previously been considered in choosing that title. But without new information - something that would change minds - continuing to push the matter would be pointless and disruptive (aka "trolling"). So let's end that thread right now until/unless such dramatically new information is forthcoming. SteveBaker (talk) 15:31, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so, you can't just change reality to suit your arguments. You closed down the entire discussion by saying "Dont feed the troll". You then went onto "Melodia"s talkpage and said "I have reverted his and your comment - Please don't respond to the troll". So get your facts straight before trying to pretend you didn't act in bad faith and you didn't insult me by dismissing my contribution when you called me a troll.Bobert902101 (talk) 16:22, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll say this to you, if I had spent many years being a contributor to Wikipedia and someone came on with a different opinion and he was attacked by others I would tell them to stop, I wouldn't just ignore it and turn a blind eye. I wouldn't go to someone elses talk page and say that he is a troll, I wouldn't delete people contributions to the talk page, as you have done (which is against Wikipedia rules). Your attitude is totally corrosive to Wikipedia because if every new user was insulted, attacked and accused then this project would be finished.Bobert902101 (talk) 16:28, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am done with discussing this with you. I don't like negativity, hostility and bullying. It was a mistake to contribute to the discussion page because it is hostile to new users. I'm taking Mike's advice and extracting myself from this.Bobert902101 (talk) 16:38, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The best advice I can give you is, stay away from any contentious part of wiki, which is most of them. The worst are the ethnic and religious warriors. Wiki reflects the real world. WP:Montana is one of the few quiet and sane parts of wiki. PumpkinSky talk 18:48, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is wise advice, some people need to relax and stop the tribalism. Montana does indeed seem very alluring, I once watched a speech by your Governor, a Democrat if I recall. He seemed very down to earth, he said he visited much of your state and extolled the virtues of a budgetary surplus. Anyway I am going to follow Mike and yours advice and contribute in other articles, though this whole episode has left a bad taste in my mouth. Thanks for reading whats gone on here.Bobert902101 (talk) 21:12, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And thanks for being supportive, this place is a little less cold when people are good to each other.Bobert902101 (talk)
LOL Bob, old Brian Schweitzer gave quite the speech at the 2008 DNC convention. We don't sometimes call him "Governor BS" for nothing! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 22:24, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
