RFC by Idorunet[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that Idorunet filed an RFC against me, and I wanted to ask you if it goes further, could you step and give your comments about Idorunet. The RFC is at [1] -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 19:21, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your mom[edit]

Heck of a header title! This is about the page Your mom which you recently deleted. The page in question was very recently tagged as AfD and actually had some content, although some people kept removing the AfD tag and replacing it with a redirect to The dozens. The two pages are not equivalent, and I would appreciate it if you could undelete it and let the AfD run its course on the talk page of the article. (Not that anyone contributed much of anything except myself, but perhaps they did so before the deletion). Looks like someone has just recreated the page, but I would really like the previous content, history, and talk page restored if possible. Thanks! Turnstep 23:25, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Snowmobile Page[edit]

I'm the person that recently updated the snowmobile page that you immediately revised and accused me of copywrite infringment. As far as I can tell, the material on snowmobile.org is not copywrite protected. Besides this, according to internet fair use laws, I am not in violation of copywrite infringment. Nevertheless, I have contacted snowmobile.org to obtain permission to use their material.

New Mexico[edit]

Hi Brian, I see you're in Category:Wikipedians in New Mexico. I'm not sure if you're currently there, but if you are there - or going there soon, I'm looking to get some pictures for the Georgia O'Keeffe article, in particular one of the exterior of the Georgia O'Keeffe museum in Santa Fe, and if remotely possible of her house in Abiquiu or Ghost Ranch. Let me know if theis is remotely possible or if you know of anyone else I could ask. Thanks. --nixie 02:10, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Abiquiu is apparently an hour outside of Santa Fe on Highway 84. I'll ask some other New Mexico people and keep looking online too. --nixie 02:24, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The portraits from the LOC are already on the commons and in the article, I wanted something senic to show the subject matter of her landscapes wihtout having to use one of her copyrighted paintings.--nixie 02:37, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Check it out.--May the Force be with you! Shreshth91($ |-| r 3 $ |-| t |-|) 06:25, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking for vandalism[edit]

I reworded the policy page to be a bit clearer, but it did already say that initial 24 hour blocks apply "except as noted below". Well, vandalism is noted below.

On dynamic IPs, especially those coming from places like schools and colleges, 24 hour blocks can cause huge problems for legit users. Plus, there's no need for them: most of the vandals, especially those that have made few edits, are just random people that think they're funny. Most will get bored and leave in minutes if you just rollback their edits. Most of the others will be bored in minutes after the block, and only psychos will still be there after several hours. And we should not assume that we're dealing with a psycho, unless we have good reasons to.

All in all, blocking dynamic ips for 24 hour does more damage than good and should be the last resort. Zocky 14:45, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Using one's discretion doesn't mean doing what you want, but rather doing what you judge to be right, by weighing the positive and negative consequences of your actions. Automatically going for the maximum block isn't "wrong" in the sense of not allowed. It's unnecessary and potentially harmful and therefore unwise. Zocky 15:00, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Semi vandalism revert[edit]

Thanks for trying to revert the vandalism to Naresh. But why did you only revert to a previous, obvious vandalism instead of reverting back to the right content? Grika 15:43, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Script[edit]

Hey. Sorry about the delayed response. What do you mean by the talk message menu, the discussion page button or the buttons on talk pages? Also, unfortunately I do not know how to make firefox extensions. I've thought about making a bot or an extension for quite some time that analyzes a diff and reports the probablity of it being vandalism, based on a score calculated from various factors. Still haven't got around to writing it though. -- BMIComp (talk, HOWS MY DRIVING) 18:52, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar of Reversion[edit]

(moved to user page)

Thank you for your strong resolve to counter vandalism and make Wikipedia a better place, please accept this Barnstar of Reversion for your great efforts. Hall Monitor 19:03, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know you may need to revert it further - I didn't do a full revert of all that user's edits, just removed one blatantly pov comment. -- Francs2000 19:49, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This page should be protected to stop TJive and CJK from keep deleting sections and insert pro-American POV.

A tool for you to play with[edit]

Inspired by your comments about diff links, I made a new toy which loads all diffs from the Recent Changes page or from a history page into that page. I could implement filters so that only "suspicious" diffs get displayed, but I think it's quite fun to play with as it stands. You can test it by copying the first few lines of my monobook.js into yours, and then you should see a new link in the toolbox (Show all diffs). This tool is probably not so friendly to the servers, but they've been pretty responsive lately so I don't feel too guilty :-)

By the way, do you have a list of bad words that I can use to filter with? Lupin|talk|popups 03:42, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

800,000th article[edit]

Since you created the 800,000th article, History of Sudan (Transitional Military Council), I hereby award you this barnstar for your efforts. Titoxd(?!?) 05:59, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

open proxies (Mammal)[edit]

I blocked a small number of open proxies, but really the next fundraising drive should raise money for the salary of some full-time Wikipedia IT staff person who would block open proxies, run checkuser to trace IPs, and report ToS violations to ISPs. It's ridiculous that admins should have to waste time on this, and we don't have the privileges in any case to do the job properly. -- Curps 06:01, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for the quick reverts on my user page. I missed the vandal myself! Donama 06:44, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're quick today! less than a minute to react to a copyvio notice at Fingal, Tasmania too. Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 08:23, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Noob123, Torchris[edit]

On the basis of the names alone, I'm not sure these should be blocked. Perhaps there's another reason? -- Curps 08:21, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about Noob123, it just refers to "newbie", and some users might legitimately refer to themselves as that. We have to be a bit careful not to jump to conclusions, it might draw criticism. I think those two could perhaps be unblocked. -- Curps 08:46, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NA intro text...[edit]

The MfD discussion on WP:NA has made some suggestions about reworking some of the wording of the page, which I think might not be a bad idea. (Probably weakening 'should be considered', for example. However, it's a comment under your signature, so obviously I don't want to rework it directly. Would you care to? Or perhaps better yet, "unsign" it, as an invitation to it being considered "reworkable". Cheers. Alai 05:19, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Racquetball[edit]

Yep! Where I live (northern Virginia) is a great area for racquetball. I play two days a week when a league is running and one or two days when there isn't a league. It's a shame that you don't play during the winter. If you love racquet sports it's one of the few that can be played indoors without being prohibitively expensive. If you are ever in the area wiki me up and I would love to play. I hope that you don't mind that I borrowed a few of your ideas for a user page.

On a completely different note, how does one go about changing their signature? I would really like my talk to appear in my sig but haven't found a way to do so. Thanks again for the note. --Reflex Reaction 15:14, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

consensus comment requested at talk:the eXile[edit]

hi, sorry to bother you but I noticed you've made some edits to the eXile before and I was wondering if you could leave a comment on some edit wars we've been having lately on the talk page, where I've put up a request for consensus comments. I'm sorry to bother you with something so trivial, but...well I think you'll understand when you see the page, or the article's edit history. If you don't have time, no problem. Dsol 21:56, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion error?[edit]

I believe you may have deleted the page Wikipedia:Find-A-Grave famous people/W/Wy in error. The current content of the page, in its entirety, now reads:

#REDIRECT [[Wikipedia:Find-A-Grave famous people/W/Wy]]

From looking at the page history and deletion log, it looks like you were trying to move another page's content to this title, but it didn't work out as you probably intended. You deleted the original content, but then replaced it with a redirect pointing to the same article. If this was an error, you might want to undelete the original article. --Russ Blau (talk) 22:22, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tor proxy prg[edit]

Hi Brian. Thanks for the note. The user used to participate in all Islam related articles a few months ago. He was than blocked after a case at RFA. At that time he was accused of handling a few usernames from Texas Univ. Now it's time for her/him handling a TPP. I am keeping an eye on that. Cheers -- Svest 22:27, 3 November 2005 (UTC)  Wiki me up™[reply]

Hey Brian. 129.7.35.213 (talkcontribs) is a known vandal of user pages (including mine) and articles and is definitely the same person as the Tor vandals - Please block. Thanks.--a.n.o.n.y.m t 22:29, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bush related articles[edit]

Brian, my apologies about my remark on the George P. Bush talk page. I should not have said I would request arbitration, I meant only that I would seek other input on the subject. I still disagree with you, however; I don't think the paragraph on the police report should be included on the guy's page, since it happened so long ago and was essentially trivial in nature (in my opinion). Also, if you look at the other pages I edited, I think you'll find I really did just clean them up and try to rephrase information in a more neutral way, without removing it. As to taking out Jeb Jr.'s mugshot, I just don't think it's right to have such an evocative picture in an article, especially if it's the only picture in the article. This has nothing to do with politics, another picture I removed a while back was one in Jacques Chirac's entry that depicted him slanderously as "Super Liar".--Cuchullain 07:30, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

SchoolFolks.com[edit]

Why did you change the reference to SchoolFolks.com to SF.com (a legitimate, but entirely different website!) on my talk page? Your edit summary said: "SchoolFolks links - acronymizing the name due to complaints". That website tried to spam the Wikipedia (and from a Google search, it is obvious that they have been very effective in spamming elsewhere on the internet), but apparently now they are upset that we are even discussing their efforts at spamming the Wikipedia. If nothing else, they should be added to the Wikipedia spam filters to prevent any further spam efforts. BlankVerse 07:58, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

They aren't ashamed of the multiple identical spams on different school and parenting discussion boards that are designed to look like a spontaneously written message, which anyone can easily find doing a Google search, yet they get upset when we discuss their very interesting Terms of Service agreement. Interesting. BlankVerse 13:35, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Known world[edit]

In articles about European history or culture, it is perfectly clear to everyone what the expression "known world" means - it means "known to the people being written about." Explaining this or putting "known" in quotes is just tiresome PC pedantry. Adam 04:42, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
