I am trying, but it's all very confusing. I sincerely believe Wikipedia is for encyclopedic information, but if I am to wait for others to write something before I can comment on it, doesn't that seem rather pedestrian. The only reason I include biographical material is to lend credence to my contributions. In a few weeks I turn 65. Hardly a time to begin waiting for others to write timely material on suich topics as silverpoint, epic poetry, and the arts. Sincerely. In The Footsteps of Masters

In the Footsteps of Masters is the personal long term artistic goal of Gerrit Verstraete. That is, to be able to master the traditions, techniques and disciplines of the masters. By diligently walking in their creative footsteps he aims for a vision of creating footsteps of his own so that others may be encouraged one day to walk in them and thus preserve and advocate the valuable traditions of yesterday in order to create great art of today and tomorrow. But who then is Gerrit Verstraete? Gerrit V.L.Verstraete AOCA, BFA, ACAD, was born in 1945. He has been a professional artist for over 40 years. He began his fine art studies as a child in the Netherlands, his country of birth. At age five, he was introduced to formal art lessons by renowned Dutch artist, Stien Eelsingh ( 1903-1964 ), who was also co-founder of the arts group Het Palet at the Hopmanshuis in the medieval city of Zwolle. In 1958, the Verstraete family moved to Canada. After completing highschool in 1964, he enrolled at the Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto ( now OCAD University ). Special mentors who influenced his work were: Canadian drawing masters Eric Freifeld, John Newman, Tom La Pierre, Richard Nevitt, Fred Hagen, John Alfsen and David Owen Campbell, and Renaissance drawing master, Michelangelo. He graduated with honours in 1968, and is an Associate of the Ontario College of Art & Design (AOCA). The journey, however, took an unusual course for the young artist. In 1968, he founded and owned a commercial design studio that soon grew into a nationally accredited advertising agency. For 15 years, his creativity appeared in print, on billboard, radio, television, in corporate design and "business theatre". His work included many creative projects especially in the world of performing arts with some of Canada's leading dance and theatre companies, including the National Ballet of Canada, National Arts Centre, Hamilton Philharmonic, Harbourfront Gallery, etc., as well as independent productions such as HAIR, Inuit Sculpture in Canada, and numerous “off Broadway” productions. Married and with a growing family that would soon count six children, he continued to attend evening drawing sessions at the college to keep his fine art skills sharp and work fresh. In 1993, he moved his family to Gabriola Island, British Columbia. There he built a large family home including a spacious studio. Today he spends full time drawing in his Masterpeace Fine Art Studio. Gerrit Verstraete is the founder of the non-profit arts organization, the Drawing Society of Canada( 1998 ). In 2001, he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree ( BFA ) from the British Columbia Open University. He is also a consulting member of the European Academy of Arts & Culture in the Netherlands. In 2003, the Drawing Society of Canada, under Gerrit Verstraete’s leadership, launched a Canadian-first, namely the online, non-profit, educational Gallery of Canadian Drawing Masters, to be followed by the online Gallery of Canadian Figurative Masters. In 2005, he launched the online educational initiative Canadian Academy of Drawing which offers a classical figurative drawing course online, based on the renowned Drawing Course by Charles Bargue, first published in Paris in 1860, for the French Academies. Gerrit Verstraete's work is exhibited in a number of galleries, museums. schoold and his work is collected by individuals as well as corporations. If you're wanting to create an article for yourself (like this one), you're going to need some references. Although the biography on your user page is great, a topic has to fit notability guidelines to be included in Wikipedia. Deletion is not certain, but many feel strongly that you should not start articles about yourself. This is because independent creation encourages independent validation of both significance and verifiability. All edits to articles must conform to Wikipedia:No original research, Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, and Wikipedia:Verifiability.

Info about yourself

Basically, adding information about yourself anywhere on wikipedia, whether it be in references, external links, or in an article about yourself, is spam. For example, your own personal artistic style has nothing directly to do with Michelangelo at all. A good rule of thumb is this: if something you have done or written is notable/important enough for inclusion, someone else will include it. If you continue to use Wikipedia for promotional purposes, you may be blocked. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:08, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

I just saw your note at the top of the page, and I think it shows that you're fundamentally misunderstanding the purpose of wikipedia. WP does not exist as a place to collect all knowledge about all people in the world. Furthermore, it is not a place for you to promote yourself or your activities. You state that, at 65, you can't wait for others to make the additions, but that really has no meaning. The vast majority (like more than 99.99% of all people that live/have lived) will never be eligible for an article about themselves. A slightly higher number have produced sufficiently important works that they may be referenced or linked to, but still, I'd estimate that at well less than 1%. We're not saying you're not interesting, or that your work isn't good, or whatever. It's just that we have standards for inclusion and against promotion, and you seem to be violating them. That this has been going on for over a year makes me worry that you may not be getting the fundamental picture of how WP works. You are certainly welcome to provide any expertise you have in improving articles, and reference to reliable sources (note that your webpage by definition is not a reliable source), but you must stop your promotional activities. Periodically I check my contributions to the knowledge base of Wikipedia, eg. information related to silverpoint and fine art drawing. Regrettably some deem those to be self-promotion when I am only one of very few who actually create silverpoint drawing. I don't sell online, nor solicit online or offer merchandise. Mine is strictly additions to the discourse. If some deem themslves to be Wikipedia Police and decide to recommend these for deletion, I cannot support the vision of Wikipedia with the assurance of being welcome. If a reliable source (i.e., a newspaper, journal article, trade journal, etc.) has written about you and/or your work, then information from that source may be appropriate to some Wikipedia articles. It is a fundamental principle that our information comes from reliable sources. Furthermore, if you think you have such info, it's better for you to add the information to an article's talk page, since you have a clear conflict of interest. As someone with lots of knowledge about the field, we welcome your contributions, so long as they are based on reliable sources. It may well be that Wikipedia isn't the right place for you, though, if you're unwilling to follow it's principle policies and guidelines. Please feel free to ask questions if you have any.
