Hi Holdoffhunger, You recently fixed a typo in a file name on the article List of women artists exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The file is File:Floor Plan and Ground Plan of the The Woman's Building, World's Columbian Exposition, 1893.jpeg. The file on Wikimedia Commons is poorly labeled. Floatation and flotation

Hi Holdoff, I appreciate your good work in tracking down misspellings on Wikipedia. Please be careful, though, to check that the word you're changing isn't a valid alternative. For example, 'floatation' is an alternative spelling to 'flotation' according to major dictionaries (Oxford, as well as Cambridge online). Hi, Bermicourt, thanks for taking the time to notice. You are right that 'floatation' is a completely valid (though much less used) form of 'flotation'. But in this case, the text in question was linking to a redirect page, "froth floatation", (made and unchanged in 2007), which ultimately lands on "froth flotation" (my correction). "Floatation" does not appear to be a British-variant of "flotation", otherwise it would have made sense to leave it, but since the "floatation device" link just ends up on "flotation device" article, the link text struck me as unclear.

I can see the merit of the arguments either way (valid word versus article link clarity; both have sections in the style manual). Can you gently remind me of an overall determining rule in these cases? I have always been mindful of British-variants, etc.. Perhaps the linking texts should remain (link clarity) as they are and I should undo only non-link text cases (valid word)? Let me know, thanks. Holdoffhunger (talk) 14:36, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi, one of the guiding rules in this area is WP:ENGVAR which states that Wikipedia doesn't prefer one variant of English over another. So if an article is written in, say, Canadian English, we leave it as such. The main exception is that, if an article is clearly regionally related, it should be written in that region's English. I think there's less clarity around word variants which aren't regionally oriented. Here there is a tendency for some editors to replace the unfamiliar or uncommon with the familiar. Connection and connexion spring to mind. Sometimes the variants involve a hyphen e.g. narrow-gauge railway and narrow gauge railway, although the latter is, again, mainly British English. My own view is that if the sources use several variants, Wikipedia should not prefer one over the others, but should try and use them in the same contexts and similar proportions. So we shouldn't delete all instances of 'connexion', but 'connection' should be the prevailing spelling. I don't think there's a guideline about that, but there probably should be. If you come across anything, do let me know.

In terms of linking to articles, we don't have to copy the spelling of the target article, but can either use a redirect with the alternative spelling, in this case froth floatation, or we can pipe the link e.g. [[froth flotation|froth floatation]]. Hello, Holdoffhunger. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
