Administrators' newsletter – April 2022[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2022).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the deletelogentry and deletedhistory rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)
  • When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)

File:Will Smith slaps Chris Rock.jpg[edit]

Hi King of Hearts. I’m wondering if your close could possibly be clarified as to which article the file is OK to use in and which part of that article it’s OK to use it in. There was some discussion that the photo should only be used in the article about the slapping incident and only in the section about the photograph. The file was actually added to another article while the FFD discussion was ongoing, but was removed. A rationale was provided for that additional use, but that was removed too. A simple “keep” could be interpreted as meaning that all non-free uses of the file are OK, which I don’t think was being advocated for by most of those who !voted “keep” for the file. — Marchjuly (talk) 07:54, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There were also some comments in the discussion left be a few VRT members which means a ticket might exist for the file. One VRT member even !voted delete based on the contents of that ticket. Nobody other than VRT members would be privy to the specifics of whatever email was received, and they wouldn't be able to post anything too detailed in the FFD to indicate what those issues might be. So, eEven if they were to start a new FFD for the file based on NFCC#2, there would be limits on how much information they could provide. So, I'm not sure how a NFCC#2 involving a ticket can be resolved in any way other then letting VRT members discuss the matter among themselves and decide whether the file should be deleted. Such a thing, however, might seem suspicious given the number of editors who aren't VRT members, but who did !vote to "keep" the file. Pinging Josve05a, Nihonjoe and FormalDude for input since they are VRT members who commented in the discussion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:54, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I reviewed ticket 2022040510007711, it is an email from the owner of the photo declining to give permission to Wikipedia for reuse. ––FormalDude talk 16:24, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Keep confidential ticket information (such as sender identity) off-wiki. Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 18:11, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I voted to delete, since there exists other image versions of this event by other photographers. This specific image has been expressly been denied permission by the owner to be hosted/reused by Wikipedia. We should therefore try and use another image where no such statement has been made. Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 18:15, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think there should be a discussion on Talk:Will Smith–Chris Rock slapping incident regarding which specific image to use, and once consensus is achieved, that will end the edit war on the file. Also, I don't think it is a violation of VRT confidentiality to disclose basic facts summarizing a ticket. -- King of ♥ 19:15, 10 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have no opinion on the matter. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:04, 11 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

PD-because[edit]

Hi King of Hearts. What do you think about File:Princess Seble Desta holding flowers with Emperor Haile Selassie, Prince Sahle, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower.jpeg? {{PD-because}} licensed files tend to seem sketchy because it always seems to me as if someone is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. This file is attributed to "AP wire services", but a notice might not have been included on it each time it was wired to some paper for publication. Do you think this could be {{PD-US-not renewed}}? {{PD-US-no notice}}? Would you keep this if it was uploaded to Commons as licensed? -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:29, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It could be one of those, but evidence is required, either of the full context of publication showing that there is no notice on the front or back, or an extensive record search turning up no indication of copyright renewal. -- King of ♥ 15:56, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking a look at this. A few years ago, this type of thing would've likely been discussed at WP:PUF, but PUF were merged into FFD. I guess {{Wrong license}} could work in a situation like this, but that's probably not going lead to a resolution in case like this. I'll try one more thing, but most likely this will need to be resolved at FFD. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:57, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
