Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or , and a volunteer should respond shortly. Again, welcome! SwisterTwister talk 23:25, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks! I have started to edit a bit more recently, though cautiously. How'd you find me? I love Wikipedia and decided to start helping it. I saw on your page that you have lots of userboxes, can I use those or are they awarded? Also, how do you call someone's name in a talk page edit? I just finished the adventure, and will check out the links you sent. --M0N57R0517Y (talk) 23:33, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
Impostor
[edit]That wasn't me. That was an impostor User:Linguist1111, who was forging my signature. Linguist 111talk 23:22, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- No problem. Ponyo fixed it pretty quickly. I'm new to this, but having a lot of fun. ANy tips you could give me?
- Welcome. I'm not really source what tips I can give you. Is there anything in particular you need help with? Linguist 111talk 23:38, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- The one thing I have is, how can I call someone else's name in a talk page? Also, do you know how to put a userbox in your page?
- If you want to message another user on your talk page or outside of their page, simply write {{ping|...}} (replacing ... with their username) and write your message after that. You can go to WP:UBX to choose userboxes. Linguist 111talk 00:03, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
Hello and welcome!
[edit]Welcome (back) to Wikipedia! . Happened to stumble on an edit of yours and noticed that, although you removed your email-address from your userpage (smart, no need to leave it out in the open for spammers and such to target), it can still be seen through your edit summary and the page's history. Figured I'd give you a heads-up on that. Up to you whether that's something you mind, but if you'd rather random folks (like me, I suppose ) can't easily see it, you could try and ask an admin to "RevDel" (shorthand for "revision deletion") it for you and possibly even request oversight on it. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 23:47, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
- Shit, thanks. How can I call that function (RevDel)? Also, I know that no expletives are on the main pages, but talk pages? Are there boundaries or anything? --M0N57R0517Y (talk) 02:29, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
- You could log into the revdel IRC channel (#wikipedia-en-revdel) or just ask an administrator on their talkpage. (Best to check whether they're active/online first, though. I usually just look who's the latest active admin on the Special:Log/block if I want a recently active admin. IRC means no one else than admins can see your request between you making it and it being acted upon, however, while a message on someone's talkpage could be seen by other folks). If you would prefer, I can go and request it on IRC for you instead.
- Regarding expletives, it's not so much no expletives in articles as it is "only where they belong". Wikipedia is not censored, so if an article quotes, say, an interview in which someone said "this is a fucking mess" then that'd be how it would appear on the article as well—but you're right that there's only a small number of situations in which expletives, swears and similar are appropriate in an article, mostly in exact quotes or when the profanity is what's being discussed. (Use/mention distinction, sorta)
- On talkpages, it depends a bit. Using swears, curses, profanities and such directed at people is obviously a pretty big no ('X is a fucking dimwit' is a good way to get yourself in hot water, even if X is not a Wikipedian), but if it's not directed at anyone, or just at yourself, it's usually not really an issue. (Within reason, of course, there's a difference between saying "Shit, I didn't notice. Sometimes I'm such an idiot -headdesk-" and something that would in a sitcom be rendered as "*beepbeepbeep*Sorry*beepbeep*didn't*beepbeepbeep*notice". Also, if folks make clear it's bothering them, the smart thing to do is usually "tone it down regardless of what the exact rules say", especially when you're on a general talkpage or worse, their user talkpage.)
- Another thing regarding talkpages: please sign your posts. Makes it easier to track who said what and when. You can sign by typing four tildes, like ~~~~. Without the "nowiki"-code surrounding that, four tildes change into a signature+timestamp when you post. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 00:21, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for all your help. The one which will take some practice is signing, and I'll check out the admin stuff. Thanks for checking in on me! Cool to get a sense Of the community. --M0N57R0517Y (talk) 02:29, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
- No problem. If you'd like, I can give you a quick run of the basics (well, the basics post-Wikipedia Adventure, anyway. No need for me to repeat all of that, I suspect?) and show you how some things work and such, even if it looks like you've figured a fair bit of it out on your own already. (Like indenting on talkpages, for example—good job, that's something that trips up a lot of new folks)
- Alternatively, you can dive in yourself and just ask me for help if/when you want or need it, if that's more your style. Easiest way to ensure I see such a request is if you post it on my talkpage (you can get there by following the link in my signature), or ping me to yours, though in that case it's important to remember to sign in the same edit you try to ping me or the notification won't come through.
- Though I've got your talkpage on my watchlist too, there's a chance I won't see a message you've left immediately or even all that fast. Unless I actively look for specific pages, things tend to get drowned out there, because I've got a lot of pages on my watchlist. Think "over 2200, talkpages excluded"...I know, I know, I need to clean it out. XD AddWittyNameHere (talk) 04:44, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
