F1 Improvement drive[edit]

Hi Skully. History of Formula One seemed to be the winner, so you know the routine! Thoughts on what needs doing on talk:History of Formula One. A lack of references would seem to be the main thing! Hope you can help. 4u1e 9 November 2006.

Questions, Questions![edit]

Hi. Loads of questions! ;-)

Two immediate thoughts spring to mind:

  • Something technical - maybe one of the technical subjects, have a look at ground effect and see if that is up to scratch for example. Or is there an article on the set-up of racing cars? Need to be aware of not writing a manual, though, which is not what Wikipedia is for. Not strictly F1, but very relevant. If you're interested in making a career in technology of some kind, then writing about it is one way of impoving your understanding.
  • One thing we don't have yet is a GA or FA season article - different challenge again to a particular race, or a driver or a team. Why not pick one of the juicy ones (1994!)?

Regarding technical innovation: Williams built a 6-wheeler (similar to the March 2-4-0) called the FW08B in 1982 - but it didn't race. Williams (after Lotus) started racing active suspension in 1987 I think, but withdrew it again after 1988. The Williams FW14 of 1991/2 successfully introduced most of the really complicated electronic trickery (apart from the semi-auto gearbox, which was a Ferrari innovation) in the early 1990s in its 'B' version. Williams pioneered a Continuously Variable Transmission F1 car around the same time, but it was banned before they could use it in a race. (Brabham beat them to that one though - they trialled a Formula Junior car with CVT in the early 1960s!).

It'd be great if you could look over Brabham as well - dont be afraid to point out stuff you think doesn't make sense or isn't really of interest! Cheers --4u1e 13:29, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on Prost[edit]

That's a fair contribution to two FAs now - well done! 4u1e 19:49, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just to second that, congratulations of getting Prost to FA, he's probably one of the three most important drivers in modern F1 history. Great work!Alexj2002 12:49, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza![edit]

Welcome, Skully Collins, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Question about the List of Formula One Fatal Accidents article[edit]

Hi Skully. On the List of Formula One fatal accidents article, is there any reason why the link for Ricardo Rodriguez ("Mexican Grand Prix") links to the circuit rather than the race, like most of the others do? --DH85868993 11:23, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BT20[edit]

Cool - thanks. I may get on to doing a set of articles on more Brabham cars once I've (hopefully) shepherded the main article through FA. 4u1e 23:20, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notable GP's[edit]

Thanks for those, I've added them to the list. You know where to look if you're ever wanting to find an article to work on... Cheers, Alexj2002 23:14, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Little thingy[edit]

How do you get the little online/offline thingy to work? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Da.Tomato.Dude (talkcontribs) 02:02, 8 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Formula Palmer Audi[edit]

it's true, some referencing is needed, the only problem is that as i'm the FPA press officer, most of it's come out of my head! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wazzman34 (talkcontribs) 15:33, 8 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Mika Häkkinen[edit]

You've decided to remove the statistics section out of the article about Mika Häkkinen, but I'm afraid I don't agree with that. Not all information in that section was mentioned in the article - especially the lists of victories, poles and fastest laps - that have been gone now. Again, sorry, but I think you've to review that deletion. --Kevin Vandevelde 21:50, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Token F1 Logo.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Token F1 Logo.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Congratulations on the list reaching featured list status, thanks in no small measure to your contributions! Good work.--Diniz 15:18, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Skully, on the article's discussion page, you suggested adding a note when a driver didn't die "on the spot". Do you think, therefore, that we should have a note for all drivers who died in hospital later the same day (e.g. Villeneuve)? Or just for ones who actually died on a different date to the date of the accident? Thanks. DH85868993 11:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ADOPT[edit]

Hi there,

As a user looking to Adopt with the Adopt-a-User program, there has been some ongoing developments that we would like to bring to your attention, as well as request help with the backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

You should know that the way the adoption process works has changed slightly. To decrease workload at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user on offering adoption please change the {{Adoptme}} template to {{Adoptoffer}} on the user's user page, and this will add the user to Category:Wikipedians having been offered adoption. Users that have already been offered adoption can always have a second or third offer, but by separating out those users that have not had an adoption offer yet, it is hoped that no one will go lacking. Once adoption is complete please use the templates found here on the Adoptee's and your user page.

Also numerous Adopters have been adding their details to a list of users available for adopting, to offer a more personalised service and allow new users to browse through and pick their own Adopter. The quickest way to adopt though, is still to contact users at the Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user.

Furthermore a new Adopter's Area has been created where you can find useful resources and other Adopter's experiences. Please feel free to add any resources you have and if you know of any useful resources for new users / Adoptees then you can add them here.

So I hope you get adopting soon - and if you have any general questions or suggestions about the further development of Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User please bring them to our talk page. Cheers Lethaniol 15:22, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I recently nominated the Dannii Minogue article for FA status. I was wondering if you would be willing to read over the article, correcting its grammar, prose, etc. Thank you very much. -- Underneath-it-All 21:03, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia 1.0 Review Team[edit]

Hi Skully, thanks for joining us! Reviewing has been in a lull recently, as much of our energy has been focussed on finishing things for Version 0.5 (the beta test came out today). Nevertheless, there is still much to do for Version 0.7. We are testing out a bot, which will select many articles for us, but we want to make sure that the community can still nominate articles. Can you let me know what you would like to work on reviewing? Areas needing serious attention at the moment are Set nominations, and various places (cities and provinces). I see you're interested in biographies, we could probably find a set of these for you to review if that's your preference. Let me know. Thanks again, Walkerma 06:40, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, our first CD release will be coming out in late March. Now we can get back online, I'm wanting to get reviewing fully under way at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations. To help new reviewers, I've written a reviewing FAQ page. Can you take a look at the to do list, and see if you can help us out? If you have any questions, please leave me a note. Many thanks, Walkerma 04:05, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Murder of Tom ap Rhys Pryce in which you participated, some editors suggested the need for a guideline where a consensus could be reached regarding whether everything which is newsworthy is also encyclopedic. I have created a draft of a proposed guideline Wikipedia talk:Notability (news). Your input is welcome. Thanks. Edison 15:19, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for participating in the Football AID vote this week.

Edit to F1 Rejects[edit]

Hi Skully, I'm wondering if there are a couple of words missing from your recent addition to F1 Rejects: Should it say something like?:

Although there is an "un-written rule" in the criteria which was addressed during the "Off-season" podcast, January 21 2007, where a listener of F1 Rejects asked why drivers who had lost their lives while driving a Formula One car and were eligable for Reject status, Roger Williamson and Tony Brise for example, weren't listed on the site.

I haven't heard the podcast, so I didn't want to update the wording myself in case I got it wrong. Also, have you considered making the text about the "unwritten rule" a footnote rather than including it in the first paragraph? Because it's sort of a minor rule compared to the other two. Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies[edit]

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of [unassessed articles] tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 22:51, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Pryce[edit]

Hi Skully - excellent work on Tom Pryce. Going for the hat trick on FA? Regarding references, I think what Yannismarou meant was to do something more like Brabham or History of Saffron, where you keep the inline citation, but just give the the author name and page number, and then list the references in full afterwards. I don't think he meant that the inline citations weren't needed at all. Cheers. 4u1e 7 March 2007, 10:54
