US federal government

Some blanking vandalism went unnoticed at Federal government of the United States, and I had to revert the last 8 edits or so. Your edit appeared to be on of the two legitimate changes, so you may want to remake that change. Sorry for the inconvenience. Natalie 20:56, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

I have been taking care of the politicians from the 1840s to the 1900s for a while now and I think it looks stupid to separate the list of offices at the bottom of the page. An ambassador is still a political office and it puts the order of his positions in the wrong order by doing that. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by The Mystery Man (talkcontribs) 01:41, 18 December 2006 (UTC).

Queretaro

There is a photo you took and put in Wikipedia that states that it is Queretaro, Mexico where in fact it is San Miguel de Allende, Guanjuato. This is a mistake, please correct, I am from San Miguel de Allende, Gto. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 134.163.255.13 (talkcontribs) 20:42, December 18, 2006 (UTC)

Image watermark removal

For Image:2006 Michigan State Police Dodge Charger 1.jpg, seeing that your not the uploader of the image, your "alterations" don't really represent the actions of the uploader and in fact, have made the image uglier because now theirs a "blemish" if you will in the lower right hand corner. It still bears a "stigma" if you will of a watermark. In fact, you've effectively distorted the image, abeit abit. That might have added another violation per User-created images. Another suitable image should be secured to replace this image. --293.xx.xxx.xx 07:08, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

a request from User: Vaoverland

Hi! I have been working on Wikipedia: WikiProject Virginia and several other projects with User: No1lakersfan most of this past year. He is now a high school senior hoping to gain admittance to one of Virginia's public university for the Fall 2007 semester. Following advice, he has done maintenance and reference adding work, as well spending time on articles. He is a good collaborator and I believe he would enhance our efforts with WP as an administrator and use the additional tools and powers wisely. Since you know me from our past communications, I wanted to request that you consider entering a vote, hopefully in support, if you agree with my judgment and recommendation at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/No1lakersfan 2.

Blown up picture of Joe Biden

I think there's something rotten in the politician infobox, but your new image for this article renders in all of its 2682x4045 glory. The last revision of the template itself occurred before you added the photo, so the image must have appeared that way to you as well (or perhaps you didn't look at the article after you added the photo). At any rate, I'm not going to fix your mistake so you should probably go take a look. Cheers. --Kooky (talk) 01:06, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

  • PS: Apparently it only appears broken when you logout and view the article. You probably didn't notice it because you were logged in at the time. So it's not really your fault. Maybe. I'm being cantankerous and you should probably take my vitriol lightly. *grumbles about people editing templates who have no business editing templates* --71.110.53.167 01:17, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:White_joe_eddie_standoff.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:White_joe_eddie_standoff.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

An image you uploaded, Image:Escudodearmasqueretaro.jpg, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. Image:Doug Gansler press photo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Doug Gansler press photo.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. - crz crztalk 22:20, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Richard Dannatt

Fair point, but in that case- how is it justifiable for any living people to have their images online? Actors, singers etc all have their pics on wikipedia be it from publicity photos , screenshots etc. Maybe I am being obtuse, but presumably all these images are freely obtainable online- in which case why are any of them permissable on wikipedia? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rob77 (talkcontribs) 23:18, 15 January 2007 (UTC).

Current office templates

Tom, just so you understand my intent. I am trying to lessen the template clutter on politician articles as much as possible. Frankly to me these particular templates (current office holders) look particularly unprofessional. It seems to me a link to a good list is just as useful as any of these templates, and a whole more pleasing to the eye. I know you want them to be consistently on all corresponding articles, and I suppose I could remove them across the board, but am not inclined to do so precipitously. stilltim 03:32, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Governor's portraits

I noticed that you have a political slant in your editing, which is fine. However, both Governor's portraits are both allowed under fair use so how about we agree to stick with the official portrait for both. I am working on getting the official written permission from the MD state archives for this photo. Your justification against the Ehrlich photo is therefore justification against any official O'Mally photo. Finally, the photo that is currently being used is from the summit is a media photo from the post that is copyrighted. Can we agree on official photos and leave well enogh alone?

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Nancy Kopp.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Nancy Kopp.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Your graph

Your graph of English is good [1] and I'm thinking it should be used in all instances of the argument "more people say 'humour,' 'honour,' etc." since they are clearly wrong. The argument from the people defending this convention, now that it seems the pages are predominantly in British English, is now more commonly "let what is, stand," but if you don't mind, I'd still like to use it as a response to the now-lesser common "more people speak British English." 67.185.99.246 22:56, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Would it not have been better to block indef? This is clearly a vandalism-only account. --Chris (talk) 22:24, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

I had the same reaction and I have blocked this account indefinitely. There are about 20 contributions and every one of them is a vandalism edit, including crude personal attacks. Most troubling to me was the user's taunting of another administrator who had given a warning that he was a "wimp" for not having blocked earlier. I apologize if I should have run this by you beforehand but hope you won't disagree with the increased duration in this instance. Regards, Newyorkbrad 22:28, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

.png

You suggested that I upload files in png format instead of gif. That's fine, I'm all for compressing space. But when I went to upload a picture as a .png, Wikipedia rejected my file. What's up with that? I've never attempted to place any image with that extension on here before, so I don't have experience with that reaction. Mr. Vitale 02:00, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I saved the file as a gif, edited it with Paint Shop. The file worked fine after conversion to png and could be viewed with other programs on my computer (HP Imagezone, Microsoft Picture Viewer). However, when I uploaded it, I was told that the file was corrupt. Perhaps the use of Paint Shop creates a problem? But the file is viewable and works find with other applications when I change it from gif to png on my desktop. Mr. Vitale 02:38, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
I used Paint Shop Pro, the 2004 version. It was packaged with my computer for free, so I make good use of it. I'm not familiar with Paint.net. I'll have to check that out and see if it helps. Mr. Vitale 18:11, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Doug Lamborn Image

I was wondering why you deleted Doug Lamborn's photo img on Feb 21? Colem 15:45, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Image:Donald Carcieri of Rhode Island.jpg

I am at a loss as to why you object to this image. You wrote: "please understand that just because there aren't any free-use images on the internet at the moment is not a valid reason to keep a fair use image". That is true. However, it is indeed one of the factors used for determining whether fair use images are acceptable for WP use. Please look at the big picture here: it is a portait picture of a sitting governor of a state, produced for PR purposes by that state. If that isn't fair use, I don't know what is (and I am speaking as a law school graduate). Specific examples in the WP guidelines for fair use include "Other promotional material" and "Publicity photos". As for your other comment: "Very few images on Wikipedia should be used as fair use, i.e. unique and unreproducible events" -- this picture is not an event, but a person, and, as such, he is, indeed, unique and unreproducible. -- Sholom 15:27, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

And I understand that you are trying to limit fair use as much as possible. But (other than a campaign poster, which I feel is the same category) I can not envision any case that is more compelling for fair use as much as this one. In other words, if this image isn't fair use, what else is? Seriously: can you describe to me any fair use image of a politician? -- Sholom 21:11, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
You wrote: "In most cases, however, the common argument is something along the lines of "no image is better than a fair use image"" With all due respect, I think you are taking this to an extreme! "Fair use" is a legal exception written into the copyright law. How ridiculous a situation it would be that Encyclopedia Britannica can use the image and WP would not! So, let me rephrase my above question: "can you describe to me any fair use image of a living politician?" -- Sholom 21:34, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
You wrote I hope you understand that this is an extremely contentious issue that is not necessarily about the interpretation of copyright law, but rather is largely about what path Wikipedia will be taking (with one end of the spectrum restricting all but freely licensed images as other wikis have done, and the other end having no restrictions). If that's the case, then, it seems like you are taking the extreme position of a contentious issue that is unresolved. It doesn't seem fair to apply it to me at this time. -- Sholom 01:02, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
So let me rephrase: the position as you described is all the way on one end of the spectrum, and it is unresolved. It seems, then, unfair to apply it -- to me or to anyone -- at least until it's resolved, don't you think? -- Sholom 13:36, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Image:Doug Lamborn.jpg

Not only didn't you answer the above question -- but you went ahead and deleted it, and now you left a message that you want to delete another picture (Image:Doug Lamborn.jpg). This is impolite and is out of control. This picture, as well as the one you deleted, clearly meets two criteria for permissibility. -- Sholom 16:04, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Wrong picture information...

Greetings...

I'm glad I finally found you. I was looking at the article on Dick Cheney, and I noticed that the caption of this picture

states that the man with Dick Cheney is King Abdullah, then Crown Prince, of Saudi Arabia. This is wrong. The man in the picture is Prince Sultan, the current Crown Prince and the Minister of Avation and Defence for more than 30 years. You may check this by reading the articles about each of them.
