Alternatives to speedy[edit]

Thanks for the note. Points taken, but I'm not getting articles written that I'd like to write because I'm forever trying to "save" bad articles. (For example, I spent roughly 7 hours working on Billy Brandt yesterday because the article lacked any substantial references and most likely was in danger of being nominated for deletion.) The only reason I knew about these short "less-than-stubs" (in my opinion) articles was that they were being wikilinked to pages that I monitor fairly closely (although I found a few other edits that needed to be made when I was reverting the links). Regardless of the potential for the article, nothing that short should be posted in the namespace, that's what sandboxes are for. This just encourages the "shotgun" method of article creation: start a bunch of stubs and then never do any further work on them, leave all the research to someone else. I don't think that's right. I see that some of the speedy nom's were deleted, some nominated for deletion. If the administrator reviewing the speedy tag disagrees with my placing it, they have the authority to change the tag. Thanks.Chidom talk  18:19, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I received your message. I'm busy right now, so it might be a few days, but I will begin soon. I'll include a synopsis, a section on themes, and a section on reviews with footnotes. Havardj Jack 21:55, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know, here are some links to deletion logs for her pages, there has been a user (who is currently banned) who keeps adding info and copyrighted pictures of WWE Diva Search contestants.

And many times, they have been deleted, so this page should not only be deleted, but protected from recreation. I hope you understand why I am putting the tag up and will put a different one up shortly. Renosecond 03:17, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I don't think she really has a lot of notability just yet, she was a contestant for a few weeks on the WWE Diva Search but that's just a hard sell. Actually, a few of the other contestants have had pages speedied and then be protected from recreation. And the user who keeps creating the pages does them at a poor quality and is quite stubborn and incomprehensible. And this user is also currently under a block for ignoring warnings about photos. Renosecond 03:30, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi: I put the non-noteable delete tag on the Theodore Hanulak page. I'm fine either way but the Aikido Journal entry you put in is a profile that members put up of themselves and of course the other is his dojo website. Lots of people in the world, myself included, run dojos. Quite a few found their own styles for marketing purposes and join like minded groups. Again - I'll leave it alone but in my opinion running a dojo is not noteable. Cheers.Peter Rehse 03:53, 24 August 2006 (UTC)PS. I did some further checking and there has been discussion on e-budo (a martial art forum) among quite well known martial artists questioning the background.[reply]

She's back. You were right there is a claim to notability there. Got to stop the speedy deletes when I'm tired. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 06:36, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. What I was mainly put off by was that it seemed to be created by the person himself. Also, the Google output was very sparse with useful links. But I agree with the keep as it is. Cheers, Hestemand 08:42, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In reference to your edit "(removed CSD. Notable.)" - the CSD was for a blatant copyvio, not on the basis of notability. That's why I used "db-copyvio" not "db-bio". We still have copyright violations in the article history, it would've been better for the article to have been deleted and started from scratch. exolon 10:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you. My worry was that the article might be deleted without someone starting over. Perhaps I should have renamed the copyvio file to a name like User:TruthbringerToronto/BadFileDeleteThis (and then ask for that file to be deleted) and then edited the redirect file that moving would have created at Julie Gould. I'm not an admin, so I couldn't delete the bad file myself and then start over. TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 10:13, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thanks for your action on Cyprus. In this case I cannot take action against vandalism since I am the creator of the pages. Therefore it is inappropriate to use my adminship in this case. But if you can act, it would please me. Electionworld Talk? 10:59, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just a minor point... when you rewrite a copyvio article (thanks, by the way) we still need to remove the copyvio versions from the page history. Any admin will be able to do this if asked (I've already done it in this case) but it's still important that it gets done. Thanks. --W.marsh 20:22, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An article that you have been involved in editing, Marion Cohen, has been listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Marion Cohen. Please look there to see why this is, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I sent a message to the user who proposed it for deletion and have since added to the article. Although the article is small (and I agree lacking), the subject is large enough to deserve an article and I will work to bring it up to Wikipedia standards. Kayah (singer)[edit]

Thank you for saving the stub on Kayah, the Polish singer, from deletion (I'm new to creating pages). However, it looks like someone with more authority than me has erased the additon I made to the Kayah disambiguation page for her. Do you think it would be okay to add it back to that page? Or is it better if you did it as I am fairly new. Thanks. Banzaiboy 07:03, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of parks[edit]

Regarding your statement that 'most parks are notable'. I can't find any policy, guideline or precedent that says so. Can you point me to the page I'm overlooking? Valrith 03:54, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I was making a general observation rather than quoting policy. In general, a quick Google search ought to turn up some evidence of notability for most parks, particularly national or state/provincial ones, even if no such references are listed in the article. --TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 03:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userfication[edit]

I didn't know you could userfy articles - just read about it at WP:UFY. Will keep that in mind for the future. Thanks for the tip :-) --Casper2k3 06:29, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading edit summary?[edit]

Hi, you used (Removed CSD. Article asserts notability.) as an edit summary on an article I speedied as a copyvio. That might give the impression that I mistakenly speedied an article under a notability criteria. Perhaps you could use something like (Removed CSD. Article rewritten to avoid copyvio) or something similar instead? Thanks. exolon 12:18, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • You're quite right. Remember, by the way, that only certain categories of copyvio can be speeded. If it is not from a commercial site (one that makes money of the content), then use {{subst:copyvio}} rather than {{subst:nn-copyvio}}. --TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 13:40, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
WP:SPEEDY does not say "makes money of the content". It just says, "Material is unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider (e.g. encyclopedia, news service)". This is ambivalent in its wording. I argue that most sites suffer commercially from content being used elsewhere, as it reduces their value of their site, leading to less traffic etc. Anyway. Tyrenius 06:14, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message about this political figure. He has some notability mainly in relation to Collex and the redistibution in NSW. His brother is notable enough but there are only a few returns on a media database. The article currently reflects the extent of the verifiable information. He might be worth a mention in an article on Michael Easson his brother as most of his notability is derived from that connection. Capitalistroadster 05:58, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for your message. I think that part of my role is to be a good example so that people will be reminded that there are often better ways of dealing with a problem article than simply deleting it. You deleted The Arms of Jesus Children's Mission, which was just a stub. I had tried to add a hangon message so that I could add the references that I found at http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Arms+of+Jesus+Children's+Mission%22

The Canada Revenue Agency web site confirms that this is a registered charity with business number 128201845RR0001. If you think that the article could be expanded into a useful one, could you please restore it? --TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 01:50, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The only content there was an external link to the mission's site, and the talk page's content was an attempt to contact the mission. This made them deletable under the third speedy deletion criterion for articles. Checking the history now, I see that you edited the page only seconds before I deleted it, apologies. If you can write a valid article on the subject, feel free to do so, simply by creating a new article; if you really need the previous edits then I can restore them. --bainer (talk) 01:56, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edits to Paxus Calta Entry[edit]

i want to request your patience in advance, i have read some of the wikipedia intro material, but not all of it. On Aug 30th you edited the entry on me with (removed CSD. Article asserts notability.) did the previous editor who worked the day before (who i believe was not signed in) delete the entire article and you replaced it ? if so, thx, if not plz explain to me what it is that they actually did and you appear to have reversed (if i am understanding this correctly). And just out of curiousity, how was it that you were looking at this page so quickly after this deletion? Thx for all your quite eclectic work for this important information source. Paxus Calta

Can you help me make a correction. I tried to move Benjamin Lee (physicist) to his correct name, Benjamin W. Lee--but couldn't do it. WP informed me that I'm to seek the help of an Administrator. Are you one? And can you help?

I see you've removed the {{db-band}} tag I put on this article. I added this because I can see no evidence of notability in the article. However I do admit I know nothing at all about the band. Can you say whether it is notable or not? If not, I shall put it up for AFD. — Tivedshambo (talk) 16:35, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • At the time I removed the tag, I thought that the band's multiple records and multiple reviews were enough to establish notability, but perhaps the record labels aren't important enough and the reviews are too brief to prove notability. I won't be upset if the article is deleted, but I think on balance that the band is notable. -- TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 01:42, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your vote of "Keep" on the pretext that the title of an Additional Secreatry in Pakistan might either be equivalent to an "undersecretary" or "associate deputy minister" is way out of proportion. There is absolutely no comparision. Being a Pakistani myself, I can assure you that an Additional Secretary is just a senior middle level management position in the Civil Bureaucracy of Pakistan. It has got nothing to do with political positions. I think roughly there might be more than 250 persons working at the similar positions for the Government of Pakistan either in various ministries or its divisions or in government corporations. You can check the same at http://www.pakistan.gov.pk/ . Marwatt 03:33, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for your note. I am sorry about the confusion; I guess I don't understand Pakistan civil service ranks. Even if his position is not inherently notable, he may have been the subject of independent news coverage which doesn't show up on an English-language Google search, or he may have written a book which doesn't show up on an English-language Google search. If you could check the catalogue of Pakistan's national library or of a major university library in Pakistan to see if he is a published author, that would be helpful. If you can't find anything, then that is worth mentioning as well.
  • Please consider adding biographies for high-ranking civil servants who are unambiguously notable. --TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 03:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dearest Truthbringer Toronto:

Thanks much for your helpful msg in my UserTalk area. As someone who self-identifies as a propagandist, it is quite validating to hear that when the situation calls for it (as in a wikipedia entry) i can be "remarkably restrained and of relatively neutral tone".

Since the UserTalk pages appear to be public, i assume you will not have any problem with me copying your suggestions and placing them into the discussion section and adding my comments (this would seem in line with the etiquette). I think both verifiability and external link issues could be handled this way.

i assume the discussion pages work something like the articles marked for speedy deletion and that (unlike the UserTalk pages) there are administrators (are you an administrator?) and others who scan discussion pages looking for places to weigh in and advise.

i did read some more about vanity pages. and was happy to see that the fact that someone else (a colleague, without my knowledge) had started this page was some threshold of value about the information and appropriateness for wikipedia inclusion.

i am currently in my "honeymoon" period with wikipedia, tweaking various articles of importance to me (not just the one about myself) and encouraging friends who are experts to weigh in and balance pieces. i am sure i will bump into frustrations and annoyances with this huge project - but right now the edits others are making to the pages (including the personal entry) seem wise and appropriate.

i am curious, if you have time for another question, about the "watch this page" tick box, i have checked it for several articles i am interested in and i assumed that when there were non-minor edits i would get some type of msg, yet i have not. Am i doing something wrong, or expecting the wrong thing ?

thx again for all your efforts.

I'm sure there is, but that article wasn't about any of them. From the first revision:

"Lincoln Christian College is a higher education establishment for the bettering of ninjas and pirates to better combat each other in the ongoing struggle. With different areas of learning including Philosophy, Music, War Tactics, Fine Cooking, Business Management."

If I had to guess, I'd say it was probably created by a student at a real college by that name as a joke, but it was definitely speedyable as WP:BOLLOCKS. -- Vary | Talk 03:21, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have replied myself -- but I would appreciate it if you could review the comments on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Marjorie Wee. I truly, wholly, emphatically did not. This message is a "heads up" to let you know that you might want to monitor what's going on on the AfD page. Any replies are welcome on my talk page. Cheers! There are a few notable CS people at McGill, including Luc Devroye, Bruce Reed, Denis Thérien but I don't think it makes sense right now to build articles for them. My feeling is that there are already too many articles in here concerning living academics. Pascal.Tesson 03:41, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination notification[edit]

What was the purpose of that AfD nomination notification? Surely if I was interested in that article, I would have it on my watchlist? I appreciate your goodwill, but I think you were a bit over-enthusiastic there. You probably didn't even notice that my only contribution to that article was to remove a single space -- hardly an example of being "involved in editing". Maybe you should post your notifications less blindly in future? — Timwi 12:34, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your inclusionism[edit]

I'm sorry to say this, and I'm in no way trying to make a personal attack (I have no idea who you really are, and you could theoretically be the nicest, most interesting person who ever lived). I'm not going to say that you're insane, because that's almost certainly untrue. However, I can say without a shred of doubt that your inclusionism in AfD debates is completely nuts. Have you even once moved to delete something? Have you seen the number of times you were the only person who wanted an article to be kept? Did you not realize why your RfA failed by such a wide margin? I apologize if I'm making a big deal out of something which, in truth, means very little to my (or your) existence. However, I don't know if anyone has ever bluntly said this to you before, so I wanted to make sure that somebody did. -- Kicking222 23:06, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Euler[edit]

Hi. I'm not sure whether you asked about Laval and McGill mathematicians because I am a mathematician or because you have yourself interests in mathematics. Either way, the article Leonhard Euler is up for FA status but has not received a lot of comments. It'd be cool if you can take a look. Thanks. Pascal.Tesson 23:07, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, done. It seems a bit confusing, though. Instead of starting (say) "The 5th Street Transit Station is..." it starts of talking about something called the B ramp... it would seem that either the article title or opening maybe need a change... my opinion only. Len Tower again[edit]

The process wonkism to overturn the AfD decision of Leonard H. Tower Jr. has been successful, and the new discussion, along with my criticism of the process now being followed, can be found at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Leonard H. Tower Jr. (second nomination). Please note that previous votes/comments are not being taken into account. See you there. - Samsara (talkcontribs) 08:02, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the previous paragraph, I changed Len H. Tower Jr. to the actual article link Leonard H. Tower Jr. - Lentower 23:26, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

110th Rifle Division[edit]

Hi, I started the nomination for deletion on 110th Rifle Division. Some of the setences are fragments, and I still can not understand the context for the article. If the article is cleanedup and context is established, I have no problem changing my vote to keep. Regards, DRK 04:10, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
