Adoption Program

Hello again and welcome to the adoption program!

Please take some time to think about what you would like out of this program and what you can devote to it. After you have thought about this please message me on my talk page about which areas you would like to focus on. As well, if you are completely new or you are not sure, you can let me know that and I can give you a general overview. You will get as much as you put in with this program. If you would like me to be someone that you can ask questions to every once and a while, then thats who i'll be. Yet, if you wish to be in constant contact with me and have me go over your work with you each day or so, then thats who i will be. This is your choice, just please let me know :P

Also if you could please remove the adoptee userbox from your userpage so that others know you have been adopted. If you like you can replace it with this user box:

Thank you for your time, Matthew Yeager 13:48, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

learning !!!

for images the first thing you need to do is check out the policy on uploading and which images you can and can not upload... else all your hard work will be lost when someone deletes it! be sure to read Wikipedia:Image use policy. when you do upload an image be sure to tag it properly from this section, Image copyright tags.

Here is the list of colors you can use on wikipedia (awesome page) Wikipedia:Color for fonts (which are any normal HTML font) check this out Font_family_(HTML)

for user boxes, check out these examples and experiment with your own creations.

problem ?

whats the problem buddy ? we just started and i gave you some information to look over, is that not what you wanted ? let me know what you would like, if you would like a different adopter, i can arrange that as well. Matthew Yeager 13:50, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm helping out with AAU and I'll answer the second part of your question. First off, check out WP:VANDAL which tells you all about vandal fighting. Basically you look at the history of the article, find the version that is clean, that is, before the vandalism, click on that version. When the old version of the article comes up, click on 'edit this page' (you will get a warning like, 'you are editing an old version of this page'), then click 'save page.' Be sure to put in the edit summary, 'reverting vandalism' or some such. You should also go to the talk page of the person who did the vandalism and leave them a polite warning. Please do read WP:VANDAL though as that page has more information, templates for warning messages, etc. The best way to learn your way around here is by reading the WP:THIS and WP:THAT (most of them are actually pretty short and to the point) pages relating to the questions, in addition to an explanation from your adopter. If the vandal stuff isn't clear, feel free to ask more about it!--killing sparrows (chirp!) 14:49, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
I think it was more a matter of trying to go through the list and be sure that everyone was contacted. Some people had been waiting for months to be offered adoption so he sent a message to everyone on the list to see of they were still interested. He removed many people that were banned or had left WP and then got inundated with requests from those that did want to be adopted. Since he has so many now I just thought I'd keep an eye out and give him a hand. AAU is being revitalized right now so there is lots of help available.
On the formatting issue, he will be able to give you better info, I'm pretty low level at that stuff, and looking at his user page he knows it pretty well. --killing sparrows (chirp!) 15:34, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

questions

hello, i see you have met Killing Sparrows! he is cool! he will be able to help you with most anything as well... and as you move up the latter into making larger contributions its better to have several people read through your material. Have you had a chance to take a look at the image policies and what is and is not allowed ?
as well, Killing Sparrows is correct, alot can be learned merely by searching for what you would like to know. If its dealing with wikipedia, for example images, just put "WP" before it when you search. So "WP images" in the search box should bring you up the page i linked to you as well as some other choices. reverting vandalism... thats a personal favorite. I am a devoted vandalism fighter (on the off season of adopting) and can help you out with most questions. After reading through the suggested WP:Vandal, be sure to check out the javascript code you can use to give you a [Rollback] button. the idea of this button is if you say the page has been vandalized, the script will automatically change the page back to the last person who edited it, not just undo it. its pretty cool, but more advanced. If you would like to see some examples of vandalism you can check out my contributions, the ones with "vandalism" in teh summary are the ones to check out. They may be a page or two back. Formatting, much is explained through the HTML article on wikipedia. if you check that out and do some tests on one of your subpages, i can then come take a look and let you know how your doing! if you dont know how to make a subpage, its easy. A subpage is just another page for your own purpose of testing. you create it by making a link like this one, User:Zachary crimsonwolf/testings then clicking on it and starting a new page. this ability is there for you to test your changes out before saving them on real articles. let me know if you have some changes you want me to check out or if you have any questions. thank you for your time Matthew Yeager 06:00, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Re: Edit Counters

I believe there is one that works at [1]. If you're never sure which are working and which are not, it's a good bet to check and see which are used to give edit counts at Requests for Adminship.

As for the article for the day templates and such, you've already got the Picture of the Day one up, and the rest you just need to know whatever it is you need to type for it. For the Article of the Day, it looks like you can do it manually with

{| style="border-spacing:8px;margin:0px -8px" | class="MainPageBG" style="width:40%;border:1px solid #cef2e0;background-color:#f5fffa;vertical-align:top;color:#000" | {|width="100%" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="5" style="vertical-align:top;background-color:#f5fffa" ! <h2 style="margin:0;background-color:#cef2e0;font-size:120%;font-weight:bold;border:1px solid #a3bfb1;text-align:left;color:#000;padding:0.2em 0.4em;">Today's featured article</h2> |- |style="color:#000"|{{Wikipedia:Today's featured article/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} |} |}.

As for anything else, you should be able to look it up not to difficultly. If you have a hard time finding anything, I'm sure we can figure it out. -- Natalya 02:08, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Adoption

Hey, I just noticed that you're adopting a few more people & I was wondering if I could be one of them? I only need somebody who will answer any questions I have, mostly "how to's", etc, nothing too major or pesky. If you could answer on my talk page, that would be great. Thanks! Polarwolf 00:09, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! A few questions that I have right now are: 1. Do I now put a "I have been adopted by --" box on my userpage? 2. How do you make a signature more creative? More specifically, with color & different fonts. I know that you go to preferences, but the rest is all as clear as mud, so to speak. thanks again! Polarwolf 17:25, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for all of your answers! however... I am still a little bit confused about the signature thing (although it is much more clear now, thanks!). I did as you said, fixed it up a bit, etc, and it seemed to work out when it was just typed, not signed. I copied/pasted my work onto my preferences & I double checked it, then saved it. I tested it out but it didn't take. It was showing this when signed (although I didn't type it that way on preferences):

[[User:polarwolf|<font color="black" face="zapfino">'''Polar'''</font>[[User talk:Polarwolf|<font color="lime" face="zapfino">'''wolf'''</font>]]]] 05:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

(It added the ]] at the end & removed them from the middle)

It seems to work when typed out, but it just fails when signed. Here's what I'm trying to do (or something similar to it)--

Polarwolf

(ps, That's just typed out, not signed) Any help would be appreciated!

Your RfA

Kudos for your RfA but I would advise against questioning or replying to every comment (well almost every comment). Some people at RfA can be very tough, particularly on edit count, and sometimes the comments end up with editors leaving the project. Don't let that be you! I've seen good things, so stick around. I would say you might want to review WP:SNOW with respect to your current RfA though. Sorry about that and I hope you take it as friendly advice. Very Best - hope to see you round the 'pedia. Pedro |  Chat  13:59, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Um...yes, I won't take any offense from the comments or advice given. But I don't really understand what that snowball page really meant. And I do not know what a BLP is (its posted in my RfA). Could you perhaps, do me the favor of explaining a little? I'd appreciate it. -Zacharycrimsonwolf 14:08, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
In a nutshell. WP:SNOW - I'm sorry to be blunt but I think your RfA stands no chance of succeding at this time. SNOW says that if it's pointless putting something through a process don't bother putting it through the process - i.e., it has a snowball's chance in hell. WP:BLP is biographies of living people. Because of the posibility of libel, articles on living people have stricter guidelines than other articles. I'm not sure off hand why it was raised in your RfA.
In summary, you are doing great things, but it should be becoming clear than you haven't seen much of WP in terms of policies and guidelines so far, which is important vital for an admin. But as I said I don't want to put you off the project as a whole, as I've seen great things so far.Pedro |  Chat  14:16, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks. But don't worry, as blunt as you'll be, I'll only get bruised. I have received good reviews from the editor review page, so I'll stick to the project (what project?) and try to be an admin until my computer is busted. No matter what people say. Cheers!!! -Zacharycrimsonwolf 14:25, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
When I say project I mean this project - Wikipedia! A humble word of advice - don't quest adminship for it's own sake. It's no big deal (per Jimbo) and is only some extra buttons. Check out WP:WAIN. I am thinking of going to RfA soon, just so I can help at CAT:CSD (with the crazy backlogs and attack pages that get left for 20 minutes) and at WP:AIV. But I'm only after the tools because I'm going to need them within those processes, not as an end in themselves. Best Wishes! Pedro |  Chat  14:32, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
WP:BLP and badlydrawnjeff were mentioned since they've been getting a lot a attention in the newspaper lately. A good read every once in a while can get you a look at the seedy underbelly of Wikipedia. Anyway, happy editing in the future. Cheers, ➪HiDrNick! 18:54, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Your recent RfA

I'm sorry, but I've closed your Request for adminship prematurely. Simply put, you've only got 565 edits on Wikipedia; while edit count isn't the only determining factor, and numerous people have their own personal standards that they judge RfA candidates by, there was no chance that the RfA was going to pass.

I'm sorry about this, and hope you don't take it personally. If you continue to contribute to the project in a positive fashion, I'm confident that you could possibly run a successful RfA in the future. You may want to consider submitting yourself to Wikipedia:Editor review for feedback on where to get some good experience, and when you're ready for RfA again, there's a great Wikipedia:Admin coaching program for you to use, as well as a guide to requests for adminship.

I'm truly sorry about your RfA; I vacillated before closing it, but there's just no way it could pass at this time. You need more experience (and to be more involved; only 35 edits in the entire month of May is extremely low for a serious adminship candidate). If you have any other questions about becoming an administrator, please don't hesitate to ask me. Good luck! EVula // talk // // 20:08, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm very soory myself. I would be happy to support you in the future! Politics rule 20:40, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Some comments on your RfA

Surprisingly, it may seem, I know how you feel. I had about 650 when I ran, which, on retrospect, was not smart. But don't quit now! In my opinion (and if the RfA had been open longer I would have voiced this) you will make a good admin one of these days. You just need to spend more time, gain more experience, make more edits (your current edits per month count is amazingly low).

Go to WP:AFD and WP:MFD (if that's what you're fond of) and don't just participate in "a few" discussions, participate in as many as possible (not literally, don't just vote for the heck of it, but be active!)

Don't let the opposers get you down, especially Politics Rules. Instead, try and take on board what N, Moreschi, and Phoenix2 said. Demonstrate knowledge of policy in deletion debates etc., so that voters are able to judge your capabilities. You might even want to listen to Gurch, but that's always risky ;)

Finally, on another note, try to use edit summaries more (there's an option in your preferences that forces you), since most RfA voters pick on that (they forgot to today though).

Hopefully this helps you in your next RfA. Don't let them get you down, just keep fighting, and you'll be a great candidate before you know it! G1ggy Talk/Contribs 22:26, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Gurch is...an interesting fellow. Just don't take his comments to heart, but take his advice on board G1ggy Talk/Contribs 02:10, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
