Valiyangode Umer Qazi ( Arabic:عمر القاضي بلنكوتي, Malayalam: വെളിയങ്കോട്ട് ഉമര്‍ ഖാസി(റ) ) the mystic leader and Muslim scholar, was a freedom fighter and poet. He pioneered the Civil disobedience movement by denying to pay the tax to British government in British India.[2] He was a companion of Sayyid Alawi Moula Daweela also known as Mampuram Thangal. He fetched the position in Indian Arabic poet by composing lines under the poetic meter.

Early life

He was born to Ali Musliyar, the decedent of Sheikh Hasan Tabee, and Amina, in the house known as “Kaziyarakath” in Hijra 1177 Rabee Awal 10. His parents died before he was ten years old. He obtained the basic studies from his father in his early childhood

Education

When he was eleven, he was enrolled in Tanoor Darse, which was borne under the mentorship Ahmed Musliyar, the decedent of Makdoom family. He studied many oeuvres from there and was accompanied with Maulana Aboobacker Hisham, also known as Aoukoya Musliyar. He was admitted in Ponnani Darse in his 13th age and accepted the guidance of Mammikutty Kazi. He learned Fathul Mueen and other authentic classical texts from there. After the six-year course at Ponnani, he left there after the death of his teacher Mammikutty Musliyar, the spiritual teacher.

The meeting with Mamburam Thangal

He left to Mamburam Thangal (Sayyid Alavi Thangal) with his friend Aoukoya and it functioned as watershed in his spiritual life. It is believed he lost all of his knowledge by confusing in the authenticity of the Thangal as Sheikh Murabbe ( the guiding mentor). He found a best Sheikh guide in him and this meeting was recorded by Mamburam Mala.[3]

He married three times, without children.

His social service

He was installed as the supreme judge in the Mahal ( Muslim locality) under Valiyangode Juma Masjid. He depended Thuhfa of Ibn Hajar to announce the verdict in the issues. He was appointed as Mudarris, the chief dean in Tanoor Darse ( mosque based college). He was accompanied by his companion Aoukoya Musliyar here and he functioned as his assistant and coworker. There were some debates between them on the swalath between Tarvih namaz.

As Freedom fighter

He initiated the Civil disobedience movement in Indian peninsula by denying to pay the tax ordered by Amsham Adikari, the local chieftain appointed by British government. The issue solved by the promise of Marakkar Swahib to pay the tax on his behalf until his death. But by the death of the Marakkar Sahib, the issue once again became headache for the rulers. The attempt of Tukkidi Sahib, the British officer, to convince the Qazi ended in the humiliating split on his face. After encountering the humiliating action from the ruler, the British officer order to detain him in the local station. In the night he escaped and offered the Zuha Namaz at masjid and later he was shifted to Kozhikode jail. He was acquitted.[4]

As a poet

He wrote poetry.[5] During his primary education period he used to follow the poetic meter used in Alfiya and later he went on with this pattern. He was blessed with skill in composing the poem spontaneously and shined in extempore poems. During his stay in jail, he used to convey his thought to Mamburam (Sayyid Alavi Thangal) in the form of the poem. He used to sandwich his letters with poems. He used the pattern of mixing Arabic with Malayalam in poem. He wrote many collection on various subjects

Affection for Muhammed

He expressed his passion for Muhammed in poems and poses. The lines which starts with عمر الفقير was famous and enshrined in the threshold of the Raoula (the shrine of Muhammed).[6]

Death

He became bedridden after the headache he suffered during the Taravih Namaz in 21st Ramadan, 1273 H. He prepared the grave for him with his own hand and awaited his death eagerly. He was adversely effected with the exile of his friend Sayyid Fazal, son of Mamburam (Sayyid Alavi Thangal). He died in Hijra 1273, Dulhija 23...
