Plot
Cardiothoracic surgeon Oh Yeon-joo's (Han Hyo-joo) father mysteriously went missing while writing the last chapter of his webtoon "W". Yeon-joo goes to his office and is shocked to see a scene of the dying Kang Chul (Lee Jong-suk), the main character of W, on her father's computer. While reading a note left behind by her father, a hand from the monitor pulled her in. She finds herself on the rooftop of a building next to a bleeding man. She manages to save him and realizes that the person she saved was Kang Chul. One of the witnesses ask her to remain in the area to provide testimony but she is suddenly transported back into the real world, more specifically, to her father's office (Kim Eui Seung who plays as Oh Seong Moo), where only a few minutes had passed. Because of her sudden disappearance, the witness, accompanied by the police, then suspect her as the suspect, concluding that she left the scene of the crime without due testimony.
At this time around she realizes the power of the drawing tablet of her father. Due to the repetitive occurrences in which Oh Yeon Joo is summoned to the W world, Kang Chul takes notice of her, and so does the people around him. His personal bodyguard, Seo Do Yoon (Lee Tae Hwan) and his personal assistant, Yoon So Hee (Jeong Eu-Gene) are suspicious about the mysterious Oh Yeon Joo that knows everything about Kang Chul. Oh Yeon Joo begins to remain in the W world a bit longer than the usual amount of time and interacts more with Kang Chul and his life. She accidentally and unintentionally drops hints regarding the fact that the world Kang Chul lives in is all fabricated and exists inside a webtoon series only. Kang Chul gradually gets curious until he eventually makes Oh Yeon Joo confess. Oh Yeon Joo continues to hesitate even when being pointed with a loaded gun. Kang Chul shoots her but she is unharmed but only Kang Chul knows that. In the few days that follow, Kang Chul leaves Oh Yeon Joo for a business trip, telling her to remain in his penthouse for the time being and so that she would be heavily guarded by some of his bodyguards and staff. Yoon So Hee lures Oh Yeon Joo into her trap, leaving Oh Yeon Joo to be captured by the police. Because she was being tracked down by the police for months on end, they narrowed her down as the attacker of Kang Chul.
During his visit, she breaks down and confesses the truth about the world where Kang Chul lives. Oh Yeon Joo disappears again and escapes prison causing the Department to go berserk. Kang Chul exits the visiting room and gets a call from Mr. Son Hyun Seok (Cha Kwang Soo) and he reports back that Oh Yeon Joo was crazy after all and mentions that this world is all fabricated and from thought. The W world comes to a halt and everything is frozen in time except the main character, Kang Chul. He finds a portal and goes through it, leading him to the real world. He finds Oh Yeon Joo at the hospital she is working in and shares to her what he has realized. Their conversation is cut short as Professor Park Min Soo (Heo Jung Do) demands her to be in the emergency room so she tells Kang Chul to wait for her and he agrees. While Oh Yeon Joo is in the emergency room, Kang Chul goes to Oh Seong Moo's house and shoots him, not long before he jumps off the Han Bridge. Oh Yeon Joo hears about this and draws to save his life. When he regains consciousness, he hears the news of Oh Yeon Joo and visits her in prison. He frees her and explains the new set-up they have. Both agreed to have a fake marriage and put off the recent events as the couple having arguments. While all this is happening, the character that embodies the true killer starts fading away as Kang Chul's goal in living starts to change and he no longer feels the need to track down the killer. The unidentified killer threatens to kill Kang Chul's new family, Kang Chul has no choice but to hold Oh Yeon Joo captive in the penthouse. In line with the events, they agreed to do as many 'sweet things' a couple could do inside the house. When they plan to cook, Oh Yeon Joo cuts her self and her finger bleeds. She shrugs it off as a minor accident but Kang Chul questions as to why she is bleeding when she is not a main character in the storyline. Oh Yeon Joo disappears again and Kang Chul is left to reevaluate his previous hypothesis about the rules of the W world. Once enough dangerous incidents have happened, Kang Chul and Oh Yeon Joo is now more than motivated to kill the killer, who bears the face of Oh Seong Moo, the writer. In a great stand-off, the killer is killed but Oh Yeon Joo was shot and was losing a large amount of blood. She is delivered in the hospital and Kang Chul returns to the real world. It is announced that she might die so he brings her to the W world because then she can be saved. She is saved but discovers that Kang Chul had been kidnapped by Han Cheol Ho (Park Won Sang) and was being left for dead. He escapes with Park Soo Bong's help (Lee Si Eun) and escapes the site. Unfortunately, he had accidentally wished to not be the main character anymore and for the story to end which causes the storyline to do so. He is transported back to the building he escaped out of and is seen by Han Cheol Ho. They beat him and leaves him in front of the hospital. He is treated medically but gets sent to prison. While he waits for the next trial, he is able to break out of the handcuffs and shoot the people guarding him and escapes. Han Cheol Ho is infuriated by this and captures Seo Do Yoon as hostage and tortures him as well. Seo Do Yoon, while drugged, accidentally reveals the information Kang Chul had given him about the W world being fictional. Han Cheol Ho meets up with Kang Chul, frees Seo Do Yoon and shoots Kang Chul after Kang Chul threatens Han Cheol Ho with a surveillance footage of him being tortured by Han Cheol Ho. Kang Chul escapes again and drives off until his car loses gas and stops at a bus stop. Oh Yeon Joo, who was treating her mentally ill father, hears about this from Seo Do Yoon and drives off to find him. Oh Seong Moo gets up, drugs the bodyguard watching over him, and draws on the tablet Oh Yeon Joo left in his room. He leaves a letter and some pictures for Kang Chul to find and gives it to the bodyguard. He drives away from the motel and witnesses the sad scene that's happening between the dying Kang Chul and the helpless Oh Yeon Joo. He bids his goodbyes as he dissipates into thin air. In the webtoon, Kang Chul dies and Oh Yeon Joo witnesses this. Oh Yeon Joo is transported back into the real world and is sent to the hospital due to high levels of physical and emotional exhaustion. The series ends with Kang Chul revealing the news of her father and the both of them promising to live their own storyline just like how other couples do.
