Adeoye Ibrahim 'Oye' Yakuba- Owolewa (born 18 November 1989)[1][2] is a Nigerian-American politician, pharmacist, and a member of the Democratic Party. On November 3, 2020, he was elected as the shadow representative of the United States House of Representatives for Washington D.C.[3] (a position authorized by D.C voters in 1982).

Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Owolewa attended Boston Latin School, later earning a PharmD (doctor of pharmacy) from Northeastern University's Bouve School of Health Sciences. He moved to Washington D. C. in 20014 to begin his career as a community pharmacist. He entered local politics in 2018 ****, and was elected US Representative in 2020.

Although not technically a member of Congress (as was widely reported in the Nigerian media), Owolewa nevertheless takes his place in history as the first Nigerian-American ever to hold the office of U.S. Representative.[4][5]

As shadow congressperson, Owolewa is a passionate advocate for D.C. statehood.

Early life and education

Oye Owolewa was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, on 18 November 1989, the fourth of five children. His mother, Bolade Yakuba-Owolewa (nee Ajayi-Obe) is a civil engineer,; his father, Ayo Yakuba-Owolewa is a medical technologist

to a father from Omu Aran in Kwara State and a mother from Ilesa in Osun State.[6][7] He is the grandson of Phoebe C. Ajayi-Obe, a senior advocate of Nigeria.[8] Oye was raised in Boston, where he attended Boston Latin School and graduated in 2008.[9] In 2014, he earned a doctorate in pharmacy from Northeastern University and moved to Washington to practice pharmacy.[8]

Career

In 2014, he started work as a pharmacist.[10] In 2018, he was elected a D.C. Advisory Neighborhood Commission for Ward 8, District 8E.[11]
