"The Beginning of the End (Lost)"

"The Beginning of the End" is the fourth season premiere of ABC's Lost and seventieth episode overall.[1] Co-creator/executive producer/head writer/show runner Damon Lindelof and executive producer/writer/show runner Carlton Cuse wrote the episode in July 2007.[2] Filming took place on Oahu, Hawaii, USA in the second half of August 2007.[3] The title is an allusion to when the character of Ben Linus (played by Michael Emerson) warns Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) that contacting a freighter to rescue the stranded survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 "is the beginning of the end."[4] The show runners have confirmed that there is some truth to what Ben said.[5] The title was first mentioned in a TV Guide article on October 15, 2007[6] and the title was officially confirmed after being found on ABC's website on November 12. With this episode, Jeff Pinkner no longer serves as an executive producer.[7]

The episode was originally scheduled to first air on American and Canadian television in February 2008.[8] Due to production of the fourth season being put on hold because of the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike,[9] the show runners want to hold the the eight episodes that have been produced until they are able to make more of the season[10] however ABC has decided that "The Beginning of the End" will air in February, regardless of when the strike ends.[11] "The Beginning of the End" will air sometime during the week of February 4, but the exact airdate and timeslot of the premiere is still unknown. The early third season aired on Wednesdays at 9:00 pm, while the second part of the season was aired at 10:00.[12] Lost lost viewers with the later timeslot and ABC may air the fourth season in an earlier one, such as Mondays at 8:00,[13] with the hope of regaining the family audience.[14] Before the strike, ABC's president did intended to move Lost from Wednesday.[15] While the television premiere is yet to be announced, the world premiere of the fourth season of Lost is scheduled for February 2, 2008[16] outdoors at Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki, Honolulu, where movies are regularly shown on a 30-foot screen free to the public.[17]
