Fancy Crane is a fictional character on NBC's daytime drama Passions, portrayed by Emily Harper since May 13, 2005. Fancy was introduced in 2005 as a vain, spoiled celebutante à la Paris Hilton, but, over the course of her duration on the soap, matured into a caring, responsible young woman. The granddaughter of billionaire supervillain Alistair Crane, she is the only person that he has ever cared for and will be the heiress to the Crane family fortune once it is revealed that Alistair's adopted son, Ethan Crane, is Ethan Winthrop's biological son.

Character history

1980 — 2005

Fancy is the daughter of Julian Crane and Ivy Winthrop and has therefore lived a very privileged life. According to her mother, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, placed there by her paternal grandfather, Alistair. Fancy grew up close to Alistair and he showered her with gifts; she was his favorite grandchild.

Fancy grew up very close to her "grampy", and, as a result, was blind to his malevolent, vindictive side. Fancy actually unwittingly brought Alistair's wrath down on others several times, including one time as a child when another boy at the playground hurt her feelings. The young Fancy later cried to her grandfather about the boy's taunts, and Alistair, in turn, saw that the boy's parents lost their jobs, forcing the couple to leave Harmony with their son.

One Christmas, when Fancy was about ten, her parents forgot to send for her, leaving her all alone at boarding school. The precocious young girl called a limo to take her to the mansion, but, when she arrived, she was devastated to find that the family had gone away for the holidays - forgetting all about her. Severely depressed, the young Fancy was jubilant when older brother Ethan showed up, a large bag of presents slung over his shoulder for her. Fancy later cited this event as one of the reasons she decided to help Noah and Theresa care for a comatose Ethan in one of the Crane cottages in the mountains.

A wild and rebellious teen, Fancy's thirteeth birthday party was canceled five minutes before its designated start time after she and her sister Pretty stole the caterer's van and drove it halfway to neighboring Castleton. She was also pulled over by future police chief Sam Bennett at least once for driving over the speed limit and without a license (Fancy was, at the time, not of the legal age to obtain a driver's license).[2]

Growing up, Fancy apparently had a sometimes competitive relationship with her sister, Pretty. According to their aunt Sheridan, Pretty brought a cute boy from their country club on the family's yacht one Labor Day, and jealous Fancy pretended to sprain her ankle so that the boy spent much of the day tending to his date's "injured" sister. The two apparently began dating, but Fancy broke up with him a week after once she was sure she had stolen him from Pretty. (Fancy, however, has denied that the situation occurred as her aunt had outlined.)

Sometime before 1999, Fancy departed Harmony for a prestigious school, either boarding or a university. She did eventually make it to college, but, according to Ivy, she has yet to complete her degree. Fancy later made her way to Italy with her sister sometime in 2004 or 2005, but the two ended up parting ways, her sister staying in Italy and Fancy heading for Las Vegas; early in 2007, however, it was revealed that something Fancy had done had gravely injured her sister, creating a rift in their relationship, possibly retroactively changing the story about Italy.

2005

Fancy was first introduced in May 2005 as a character à la Paris Hilton - a spoiled, selfish "princess" who even owned a dog named Prestine (comparative to Hilton's dog, Tinkerbell) and had supposedly dated two of Hilton's ex-boyfriends. She was partying in Las Vegas with her friend, Veronica, when she set her sights on Noah Bennett, who was operating under the alias of Ned. Noah rejected Fancy's advances, however, mistaking her for a prostitute and infuriating the heiress.

Later that night, Noah and Fancy found themselves thrown together once more when she sought solace in his room from an attempted rapist. The hotel staff, however, upon discovering that Noah had been squatting, chased the two around the hotel. In one room, they found a suitcase full of money - and the corpse of Fancy's attempted rapist. Spooked, the two gave the money to two nuns and left Vegas for home - unaware that both called Harmony home.

Back in Harmony, Fancy discovered Noah's true identity, and vice versa. Fancy complained to Alistair about Noah, and Alistair, furious at his granddaughter's treatment, declared war on the Bennett family by having Sam Bennett fired as chief of police. Noah was furious at Fancy, but he continued to protect her first when mobsters from Las Vegas came after them and then when a tsunami hit Harmony. The two found shelter in a store, and there the two first began to acknowledge their feelings for one another.

Any progress made was dashed, however, when Fancy found a letter from Noah's ex-girlfriend, Maya Chinn, in Noah's wallet. In the letter, Maya reminded Noah that he'd claimed that he'd never love another girl like he'd loved her, leaving Fancy devastated. When Noah left town, however, Fancy obeyed her mother's wishes and chased after him, and the two reconnected.

Noah and Fancy were about to consummate their relationship at Sheridan's cottage when Alistair arrived. Unaware that Noah was hiding in the other room, he lectured his granddaughter, warning her to stay away from "commoners" like Noah Bennett. Fancy placated her grandfather, but Noah thought that she was telling the truth and left, angry. Later that night, he informed Fancy that they were over.

After a date with Edmund Sinclair, both one of Noah's friends from boarding school and the grandson of one of Alistair's business associates, Noah and Fancy overcame their misunderstandings and finally had sex on the beach. Alistair watched the two from the bushes, and planted drugs and a gun in Noah's car in retaliation, and Noah was arrested. Fancy briefly broke up with Noah, hoping to save him from her grandfather's wrath, but both eventually decided to find strength in their love.

Upon learning that Alistair had removed her from his will after his marriage to Theresa and adoption of Little Ethan, Fancy was devastated. Though she was sure that a future with Noah was more important than the Crane billions, she had difficulty adjusting to the idea of being "poor" and having to work for a living. Fancy exploited her position as Alistair's favorite to have him offer Noah a position at Crane Industries; Noah was furious that Fancy would suggest such a thing, and they broke up again.

Fancy began to work at Crane Industries as head of the style division, but not even work could distract her from missing Noah. When her friend, Esme Vanderheusen, came to Harmony and set her sights on Noah, Fancy became so jealous that she tricked Esme into leaving town and reunited with Noah. Still, the couple was unable to find happiness as Fancy now suspected Noah of infidelity. Fancy followed her lover one December evening and found him and Theresa at one of the Crane cabins with her and Noah's mutual comatose half-brother, Ethan, who had been set to be removed from life support. Furious at Noah's actions, which defied Ethan's own wishes, Fancy broke up with Noah once more. Remembering a Christmas past, however, when only Ethan had remembered her at boarding school, Fancy decided to refrain from calling the police until after Christmas.

The police found Ethan, though, and Fancy, Theresa, and Noah were all arrested. Alistair bailed his wife and granddaughter out of jail, and Fancy, having forgiven Noah, arranged for them to spend Christmas Eve together at the jail.

2006

Noah and Fancy's relationship was dealt a severe blow when Noah called out the name of his ex-girlfriend, Maya, while in bed with Fancy. Fancy, furious, broke up with Noah when he wouldn't come clean about his past. Noah, eager to fix his relationship, was prepared to come clean with Fancy, but when Maya, who had returned to Harmony, was attacked on the wharf due to a murder that she and Noah had witnessed in college, Noah decided to clam up; Fancy reiterated the dissolution of their relationship.

Miserable without Noah, Fancy agreed to take him back on one condition - that he tell her about his past with Maya. Noah was prepared to do so when a car crashed into the diner that they were occupying, causing glass to severely damage the optic nerve of Fancy's right eye, as well as lacerate the cornea. With the amount of glass embedded into the back of her eye, doctors were unsure if it could be saved. Fancy was terrified, but felt even more strongly that she needed to know about Noah and Maya's past, as the organization threatening Noah and Maya had undoubtedly been the ones to drive the car through the diner. Noah refused to tell Fancy, fearing for her safety, and Fancy maintained that their relationship was over.

After talking with Katherine and Rachel, however, Fancy decided to accept Noah's lies and take him back. Their reunion was short-lived, however, for Fancy soon found Noah in bed with Maya. Noah, who, along with Maya, had been arrested by the FBI on charges of terrorism, made a deal to pretend to be dating Maya and garner information from the terrorist organization for the FBI. Noah told Fancy that she'd only been a conquest to him, and Fancy, broken-hearted, ended their relationship.

With a clean bill of health in regards to her eye, Fancy left Harmony for Rome, a city that she hoped would inspire her to design more clothes. In Rome, Fancy found that Esme and the notorious gigolo Gianni Valentino were staying at her hotel - as well as Noah and Maya, who were there to double-cross Lena and her terrorist organization. Fancy briefly dated Gianni to make Noah jealous, but when, at a club, Noah sincerely swore his undying love for her, Fancy took Noah back. The two slept together again, but when she woke up, Noah had gone back to the club, where he was making out with Maya. Fancy swore Noah off once and for all.

Fancy and Noah crossed paths in Rome once more when they heard a woman (Whitney Russell) in the catacombs screaming. Beneath the city, Noah and Fancy found Chad Harris and Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, who had been buried beneath the rubble of a cave-in. Luis, thinking that Fancy was her aunt Sheridan, his ex-fiancée, mistakenly kissed Fancy, and later carried his almost-niece out of the catacombs after a falling rock struck her in the head. It was during this event that Fancy first developed a crush on Luis, though both remained oblivious to her true feelings and became good friends.

Luis, fearing that Fancy might be the "[person] from Harmony who [would] die in Rome", decided to become Fancy's bodyguard, a difficult task. Fancy ended up becoming friends with a woman who was none other than her deranged half-aunt, Beth Wallace, who erroneously believed that Luis and Fancy were lovers. Beth tried to kill Fancy both in Roman ruins and in her hotel room by locking Luis in the bathroom and smothering Fancy with a pillow, but ultimately failed. Fancy, fearful that Beth might return, had Luis platonically share her bed for protection; Noah walked in on the two and believed that they had had sex. Noah told Fancy that she disgusted him, and Luis comforted Fancy as she cried.

After her attack, Fancy became determined to help Luis find his son, Marty, whom Beth had kidnapped. Fancy used Beth's determination to commit murder to lure her to an art gallery, but Beth escaped into a cab with Marty. Luis and Fancy chased the cab via motorcycle, but the cab crashed and burst into flames, killing Beth and Marty.

Around this time, Noah finally told Fancy that he had only pretended to be involved with Maya as part of an FBI sting to bring down a terrorist, Lena, who had been a part of Alistair's omega plot. However, with both Maya and Lena dead and his sister, Jessica, uncooperative, Fancy refused to believe Noah's story, though Noah accused her of not wanting to reunite because she was in love with Luis.

When Sheridan called with the news that Alistair was no longer in a coma and more than likely in Rome, Luis set out to murder Alistair, blaming him for Marty's death; Fancy followed. They, along with Noah and Chad, found Alistair in the basement of a church possessing the omega symbol, where he was attempting to heat the chalice in the fire and thus become omnipotent. The four stopped him, but he triggered a cave-in and escaped. Luis and Fancy found him in an exact replica of his Harmony study in the catacombs, as well as a very-much-alive Beth. Luis and Fancy attempted to take the two to the police and force them to reveal Marty's whereabouts, but Alistair and Beth again escaped, retrieving Marty and fleeing to some Roman ruins. Alistair unleashed lions on the two, forcing Fancy to realize just how evil her grandfather truly was, and when Luis had to stop to save Fancy, the trio escaped.

Demented Beth, however, was determined to still be with Luis and called him, and Interpol was able to track the signal to a train preparing to leave the city. Luis, Fancy, and Noah took an Interpol helicopter to chase after Marty, but a mysterious drone plane destroyed a bridge, causing the train to plummet into a ravine, killing Alistair, Beth, and Marty. Devastated, Luis, Fancy, and the rest of those involved in the venetta storyline returned to Harmony. Sheridan was devastated to learn of Marty's death and suffered a miscarriage; she informed Luis that she would now never leave her husband for him.

Upon returning to Harmony, Fancy came to realize that she had feelings for Luis and, with Sheridan's blessing, began to actively pursue a relationship with him. She quit her job at Crane and joined the police cadet training program in order to be close to the object of her desires, but eventually came to love police work and refused to quit when she discovered that officers and cadets were forbidden from fraternizing. Instead, she and Luis decided to begin dating after she had been graduated from the police academy.

While playing with her young cousin, James, Fancy realized that the boy had seen the man who had murdered one of the Cranes' maids, Phyllis. Fancy chased after the man without calling for back-up, and he rendered her unconscious in an abandoned mineshaft, blindfolded her, and attempted to rape her. Chris discovered what Spike was attempted and stopped him, but Fancy escaped and fled, eventually falling through some rotten floorboards and landing, unconscious, on a platform many feet down. Chris and Spike both believed Fancy to be dead and left her.

Luis, meanwhile, searched frantically for his girlfriend, causing Sheridan to become stricken with jealousy. She fixed Luis some tea and put a sleeping pill in it, despite the fact that such an act would risk her own niece's life. However, in their unconscious states, Luis and Fancy's souls were able to connect and Fancy was able to tell Luis where she was; when Luis awoke, he found dirt and blood on his jacket that had not been there before he'd fallen asleep. While attempting to rescue Fancy, she and Luis plummeted to the bottom of the mineshaft. As Fancy lay dying, Luis built a fire and stripped in order to keep her warm with his body heat. Fearful of losing her, he admitted that he loved her.

Back at work, Fancy was determined to prove herself to Luis, her superior; she switched with an officer in order to go undercover and catch a peeping tom. The sting backfired, however, and by the time Luis arrived, it was too late: the peeping tom had brutally raped Fancy, leaving the young woman emotionally scarred. At the hospital, she fell into a coma; Luis remained by his love's side, encouraging her to wake up, while a jealous Sheridan told her comatose niece that she was no good for Luis, and that she would only bring him pain.

Fancy eventually awoke shortly after falling into a coma, the Christmas miracle of 2006. Though emotionally and physically devastated by her rape, Luis swore to stand by her side as she healed.

2007

As Fancy slept, trying to recover from her rapes, her rapist used a secret passageway leading to her closet to terrorize her when she was alone. During one attack, Fancy was able to rip a button from her attacker's shirt, but Sheridan found and hid it, convincing Luis that a combination of trauma and alcohol had convinced Fancy to imagine her attacks, also suggesting that Fancy might be purposely fabricating the attacks for attention. Fancy lashed out at her aunt, revealing that she had heard Sheridan's monologue as she lay in a coma, but Luis was unprepared to believe that his ex-flame had changed so drastically.

Finally, Fancy's attacker succeeded one night as she slept in her "Princess Room". The attacker injected Luis with a drug, causing him to hallucinate that he was making love to Fancy while, presumably, the attacker collected some of Luis's semen. After dragging Luis away, the attacker then raped Fancy for a second time, at which time he or she likely inserted Luis's semen into her vagina. When Chad and Whitney heard Fancy screaming they burst into her room, only finding her alone but bruised. Everyone searched the mansion for Fancy's attacker, finally finding the masked man unconscious in the pantry. When his mask was removed, the man was revealed to be none other than Luis. Fancy was devastated by the turn of events, unsure if she could trust Luis after he promised - and failed - to protect her.

Fancy eventually agreed to undergo a rape kit, and the DNA found inside of her was a perfect match to that of Luis. As Fancy had earlier admitted that she and Luis had never had sex, Luis was arrested for rape and then later released on bail. Hoping to prove his innocence, both Luis and Fancy underwent hypnosis; Luis eventually remembered being attacked by the blackmailer, and both he and Fancy referred to their attacker as being female. Luis and Fancy hoped to be able to finally prove his innocence when Simone's girlfriend, Rae, claimed to have information about Fancy's attacker, but the attacker murdered Rae and framed Luis.

Fancy was called to the scene of an arson, where she saw the assumed arsonist inside; when a box of ammunition exploded due to the heat, she thought that she was being shot at, and returned fire, striking the arsonist. She soon discovered that the arsonist was none other than Luis, and he was rushed to the hospital, where he survived but was now charged with arson and a second murder, that of a bartender at the Blue Note who claimed to have information on the attacker from Rae.

Luis and his brother, Miguel, were both tried at the same time, despite having committed unrelated crimes. Fancy provided helpful testimony on the witness stand, but a jealous Sheridan took the stand and destroyed her niece's credibility and admitting that she still wanted Luis for herself. Luis was convicted of both counts of murder, both counts of rape, and arson, and was furious at Sheridan for her antics.

Luis was sent to prison, but, hoping to spare Fancy the pain of seeing him in prison, removed her from the visitors list. Determined to see Luis, she disguised herself as a quasi-lesbian prison guard so that she could see and watch over Luis. Unbeknownst to her, Sheridan had disguised herself as a man and snuck in as Luis's cellmate; Fancy saw Sheridan kiss Luis and believed that Luis had turned gay. After confronting Luis in solitary, she eventually came to find that this was not the case.

Sheridan, however, saw a live feed on Fancy's laptop of Luis and Fancy about to have sex in the prison infirmary; she called the warden, and Fancy was ejected from the prison. Her only contact with Luis was now during visiting hours, and she was unable to protect him from the violent prison guards. After learning that Judge Reilly ordered that Luis be executed as soon as possible, Fancy began frantically searching for a way to clear Luis's name.

By late July, Luis's time had about run out; all of his appeals had been denied, and his execution was imminent. Desperate to savor their remaining time together, Fancy proposed to Luis, and he accepted. They were set to be married early in August, but Fancy's younger sister, Pretty, returned to Harmony just as Fancy was prepared to walk down the aisle. Pretty threatened to tell Luis how the sisters had been involved in a fight as teens that had left Pretty permanently scarred, and Fancy, who wanted to allow Luis to die with faith in her, canceled the nuptials.

Luis was executed on August 6, much to Fancy's dismay, but Endora Lenox quickly turned back time in the execution chamber so that Eve Russell was able to admit that her long-lost son with Julian (and Fancy's half-brother), Vincent Clarkson, was the mysterious blackmailer who had killed Rae Thomas and Dylan Flood (and presumably raped Fancy twice). Vincent was arrested, and Luis was freed. Pretty was determined to have her revenge on her sister, though, and she told Luis that Fancy had thrown pool chemicals in her face in a purposeful attempt to scar her. Luis didn't believe Pretty until Fancy confirmed the story, though she denied that the attack was intentional. Fancy tried to break up with Luis, afraid that the so-called "Crane curse" would cause her to harm Luis, as it had caused all of her Crane relatives to harm their loved ones, but Luis convinced her to continue their relationship.

Early in September, Alistair, with Pretty's help, drugged Fancy and had a mind-control device implanted into her brain via her nose. When Alistair tried to issue Fancy a command to slap Luis during foreplay, the device malfunctioned, and Fancy was hit with a disabilitating headache. The headache eventually stopped, but Fancy's nose soon began to bleed heavily; the NBC finale on September 7 had Fancy passed out as a result of the nosebleed.

When Passions moved to DirecTV on September 17, Fancy quickly regained consciousness. However, Alistair finally discovered how to properly work the mind-control device, and has successfully caused Fancy to lash out at Luis and slap him across the face. Fancy's random and violent outbursts, coupled with Luis's secretive quest to find Marty and magically-influenced trysts, both with Sheridan, put strain on the couple's relationship and eventually led Fancy to call quits.

After breaking up with Luis, Fancy went to the wharf to clear her head; there, she came across her ex-boyfriend, Noah Bennett. Due to Tabitha's spell, the two wound up kissing. Later, on Thanksgiving, another of Tabitha's spells transported Fancy to the Lenox living room and caused her to make out with Noah; Noah's girlfriend, Paloma, caught them, but Noah's sister Kay zapped Fancy away and made all three forget what had happened. Tabitha was persistent, however, and, while Kay was out, she used her powers to transport Fancy to Noah's bedroom and cause the two to have sex; when Paloma and Sheridan walked in on them, the two had no idea how they'd wound up together, or why they were in bed together. Paloma was furious and devastated and broke up with Noah, while Sheridan gloated to her niece, calling her a slut and accusing her of never truly loving Luis.
