Walajapet is a city, a Grade-II municipality, and a Panchayat Union in Vellore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
It is strategically located on the Palar River on the route between Chennai (Madras) and Bangalore. By bus, this town can be reached in 2.5 hours from Chennai (Madras). It is well connected both by road and railways. Walajah Road railway station is located about 4.5 km from the town, lying between Arakkonam and Katpadi junctions on the important railway route connecting Chennai to Coimbatore and Bangalore.
This town, located in the Vellore District, is considered to be the First Municipality and Taluk of Tamil Nadu, believed to be formed in 1866. Former President and prominent Indian philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888 - 1975) and noted tamil scholar Mu. Varadarasanar affectionately called "Tamil Thatha Mu. Va" were among those studied in the Govt. Higher Secondary School of Walajapet that has celebrated its centenary a decade ago.

Geography
Walajapet is located at 12°56′N 79°23′E / 12.93°N 79.38°E[2]. It has an average elevation of 160 metres (524 feet).
Demographics
As of 2001 India census[3], Walajapet had a population of 29,472. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Walajapet has an average literacy rate of 74.51%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80.58%, and female literacy is 68.44%. In Walajapet, 10.86% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Tamil & Telugu are the languages spoken by the most. Significant migrant population from Saurashtra region in the western India speak Saurashtra and most of the minority muslim population speak Urdu.

There is a Government Veterinary clinic in Walajapet that serves mainly to the cattle raised by the farmers, shepherds in the area including the many villages in this Taluk.
