The event featured eight [[mock combat|professional wrestling matches]] that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing [[script]]ed feuds, [[plot]]s and [[storyline]]s. Wrestlers were portrayed as either [[Heel (professional wrestling)|villains]] or [[Face (professional wrestling)|fan favorites]] as they followed a series of events which built tension, culminating in a wrestling match or series of matches.

The main [[Feud (professional wrestling)|staged rivalry]] heading into Destination X was between The Angle Alliance ([[Kurt Angle]], A.J. Styles <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[A.J. Another rivalry heading into Destination X was the conclusion of a feud between Rhino and James Storm. Rhino explained his actions on the ''[[TNA Impact|Impact!]]'' after Against All Odds, where he stated that Storm had brought back many bad memories from his childhood and seeing his father drink alcohol all the time. Destination X (2008) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), which took place on March 9, 2008 from the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia. It was the fourth annual event under the Destination X chronology. Eight professional wrestling matches were featured on the event's card.

The event featured a supercard, a scheduling of more than one main event. The first was a Six Man Tag Team match, in which the team of Samoa Joe, Kevin Nash, and Christian Cage defeated the team known as "The Angle Alliance" (Kurt Angle, A.J. Styles, and Tomko). Another featured match took place 15 feet (4.6 m) above the ring in what was called an Elevation X match, which saw Rhino defeat James Storm. Two featured bouts were scheduled on the undercard. Robert Roode defeated Booker T in a match where they were tied together by a leather strap titled a Stand By Your Man Strap Match. The other saw the team of Curry Man and Shark Boy defeat the team of Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon) in what Shark Boy dubbed a Fish Market Street Fight; a bout in which no one can be disqualified and the participants can fight anywhere.

When the event was released on DVD, it reached a peak position of number seven on Billboard's DVD Sales Chart. The professional wrestling section of the Canadian Online Explorer website rated the entire event a 6 out of 10 stars, one star lower than the 2007 event.

Background

The event featured eight professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots and storylines. Wrestlers were portrayed as either villains or fan favorites as they followed a series of events which built tension, culminating in a wrestling match or series of matches.

The main storyline rivalry heading into Destination X was between The Angle Alliance (Kurt Angle, A.J. Styles [Allen Jones], and Tomko [Travis Tomko]) and Samoa Joe (Joe Seanoa), Christian Cage (William Reso), and Kevin Nash. With Cage wanting revenge on Tomko and Styles for aligning themselves with Angle by costing him his chances at the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at TNA's January pay-per-view (PPV) Final Resolution and their February PPV Against All Odds. While Joe wanted to show Angle that he was ready for their World Heavyweight Championship match at Lockdown.

Another rivalry heading into Destination X was the conclusion of a feud between Rhino and James Storm. This scripted rivalry restarted when Rhino returned from a legitimate injury at Against All Odds and cost Storm his match with Eric Young (Jeremy Fritz). Rhino explained his actions on the Impact! after Against All Odds, where he stated that Storm had brought back many bad memories from his childhood and seeing his father drink alcohol all the time. Rhino then challenged Storm to a Elevation X match at Destination X to finish their rivalry. Storm later accepted his challenge.

The primary match on the undercard was between Booker T Robert Huffman and Robert Roode. With Roode and Booker being placed in a match to decide the faith of Traci Brooks (Tracy Brookshaw) and Ms. Payton Banks (Bonnie Maxon) in a Stand By Your Man Strap Match. Where if Booker won the match Brooks would be allowed to lash Banks ten times with a strap and vice-versa.

The main feud heading into Destination X from the Knockouts division was the fight over the TNA Knockouts World Championship between Awesome Kong, Gail Kim, and O.D.B.. This feud began when Gail Kim lost her Knockouts Championship to Kong on Impact! a few weeks earlier. Kim wanted a rematch while ODB also wanted a rematch from her lost at Against All Odds. It would later be announced that all three would be fighting in a Triple Threat match for the Knockouts Championship at Destination X.

A small feud heading into Destination X was between Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon) and Shark Boy and Curry Man. At Against All Odds, Team 3D lost their match with the team of The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley) and Jay Lethal. Because of their lost they had a new stipulation, where they had to weigh in before every match. If they didn't weigh in under two hundred seventy five pounds then they would have to forfeit the match. After the stipulation began Team 3D would have match after match with the Team of Shark Boy and Curry Man. Each time only one member of Team 3D would weigh in under the mark. In each match the member that didn't weigh under the mark would help the other win the match with dirty tactics. Shark Boy and Curry man began to get fed up with being cheated in their matches and later would challenge Team 3D to a match at Destination X. On the Impact! before Destination X, Shark Boy and Curry Man won a Tag Team Battle Royal, where they got to pick a stipulation to add to their match. Shark Boy would change the match to a Fish Market Street Fight, with the added stipulation that if both members of Team 3D didn't weigh in under 275 pounds that they would be fired from TNA.

Event

Before Destination X aired live, Roxxi Laveaux (Nicole Raczynski) defeated Angelina Love (Lauren Williams) in a match that is held before the event airs live to hype up the crowd in what is known in professional wrestling as a dark match.

Samoa Joe won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at Lockdown from Kurt Angle.

Following the events of Destination X, Jim Cornette announced on the March 13 episode of Impact! that at Lockdown Kurt Angle would defend the TNA World Heavyweight Championship against Samoa Joe.[3] At Lockdown, Joe claimed victory in the match to win the World Heavyweight Championship.[4]

On the episode of Impact! after Destination X, Christian Cage and Tomko were announced as the captains for the annual Lethal Lockdown match.[5] At Lockdown, Cage's team consisted of himself, Kevin Nash, Rhino, Sting, and Matt Morgan, while Tomko's was made up of himself, A.J. Styles, James Storm, and the Team 3D pairing of Brother Ray and Brother Devon; Team Cage went on to win the encounter.[6]

Booker T and Robert Roode continued their rivalry at Lockdown, but with the added additions of Sharmell and Payton Banks. On the March 20 episode of Impact!, Cornette promoted an intergender tag team match for Lockdown, in which Booker T and Sharmell would face Roode and Banks.[7] Booker T and Sharmell went on to win the match; the rivalry slowly dissolved afterwards.[4]

Awesome Kong, Gail Kim, and O.D.B.'s rivalry continued at Lockdown in a tag team match pitting O.D.B. and Kim against Kong and her manager Raisha Saeed. The match was the result of Kim and O.D.B. being frustrated with Saeed for costing them their chances at the TNA Women's Knockout Championship. Kim and O.D.B. went on to prevail at Lockdown.[8]

Reception

Canadian Online Explorer writer Jason Clevett rated the entire event 6.0 out of 10 stars.[9] The rating was lower than the 2007 event, which was given a 7.0 out of 10 stars.[10] The Elevation X match, one of the matches from the double main event, was rated a zero out of ten stars.[9] The Six Man Tag Team match main event was rated a 5 out of 10 stars.[9]

The event was released on DVD on May 13, 2008[11] by TNA Home Video.[12] The DVD reached a peak position of seventh on Billboard's DVD Sales Chart for recreational sports during the week of June 7, 2008.[13] The DVD did not remain on the chart afterwards. The DVD also received reviews from customers, as the average customer rating from Amazon.com was 3.0 out of 5 stars.[14]
