Neal James Eardley (born 6 November 1988 in Llandudno) is a Welsh international footballer who plays for Oldham Athletic in Football League One. His predominant position is as a defender.

Career

In May 2006, Eardley made his transition from the Boundary Park youth system of Oldham Athletic to the first team. He made his first team debut in a 1–1 draw versus Scunthorpe United.[1] In the following season, Eardley became a regular starter in the Oldham defence. His 2006–07 season got off to a rough start, as he was sent off with red card in the opening day game shortly after teammate Chris Taylor, as Oldham lost 1–0 to Tranmere.[2] In December 2006, he scored his first goal for Oldham in a 2–1 loss to Chesterfield via a free kick.[3] In his first season as a regular starter, Eardley made 41 total appearances while scoring two goals.[4]

In the following season, became a valuable member to the Oldham defence as he was named captain during Sean Gregan's absence.[4] On 11 March 2008, he had his first multi-goal game—scoring twice from penalty kicks in a 2–0 win over Bournemouth.[5] Almost two months later, he again had a multi-goal game in a 4–1 rout of Crewe Alexandra.[6] In total, he made 49 appearances while scoring six times.[4]

International career

After nine appearances for the Wales U21 national team, Eardley earned his first senior cap for Wales in a 1–0 win over Bulgaria in August 2007, coming on as a substitute in the 46th minute.[7] He also earned several more caps in Wales' unsuccessful Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.[4]
