Soil, often typeset as SOiL, is a four piece hard rock/metal band from Chicago, Illinois, United States. Members currently include AJ Cavalier (vocalist), Tom Schofield (drums), Tim King (bass), and Adam Zadel (guitar). The band found their most significant success with their 2001 major label debut, Scars. After a 2004 follow-up, Soil was dropped from J Records, and lead vocalist Ryan McCombs left the group. They recruited AJ Cavalier in 2005 and released a fourth album in May the following year. Since then, guitarist Shaun Glass left the band, and Soil signed with Driven Records.

History
1997-2004
Soil was originally formed in 1997 by members of death metal acts Broken Hope and Oppressor as a side project to their other band. This included guitarist Shaun Glass, drummer Tom Schofield, bassist Tim King, and guitarist/vocalist Adam Zadel. Later on, King discovered vocalist Ryan McCombs through a compilation CD of unsigned bands and invited him to join the group. Glass came up with the band name, and within two weeks, Soil began recording their first demo which was picked up by Olympic Records. In this time, the band would become the full-time project of all its members. According to McCombs, although all the members contributed to the songwriting process, Zadel proved to be their "chief writer."

After releasing an eponymous EP in 1997, Soil joined MIA Records and developed a second EP, El Chupacabra. This led to their 1999 debut album Throttle Junkies which bared a Southern rock tinge and failed to break Soil into the mainstream. After this release, MIA Records folded. Enlisting the help of the Chicago-based producer Johnny K, Soil began writing entirely new material and produced several new demo tracks in August 2000.

Soil's mainstream exposure was soon to come. After discovering their demos online, Pat Lynch of Orlando rock radio station WJRR, played the demo of "Halo" which quickly gained heavy rotation. A major label bidding war erupted with a different label coming each week to watch Soil practice. After setting up a showcase and then flying to New York to thoroughly examine their top three picks, the band collectively chose J Records (a division of RCA Records).<ref>McKay, Chris Interview with Tim King ConcertShots.com (April 1, 2002). Its commercial value manifested in the popular singles "Halo" and "Unreal" and saw the band perform on the Second Stage of Ozzfest 2002.
Soil was originally formed in 1997 by members of death metal acts Broken Hope and Oppressor as a side project to their other band. Soil's first three releases, Soil (EP), El Chupacabra (EP) and their debut album Throttle Junkies, failed to break the band into the mainstream. It was around this time that all the members of Soil left their other bands to focus on Soil as their main project.
On March 23, 2004, Soil released their second major label release, Redefine, which reached #78 on The Billboard 200. While boasting their highest charting record and single to date, its disappointing sales led to J Records dropping Soil from the label. Later in the year, in the midst of touring, vocalist Ryan McCombs announced his sudden departure from the group to focus on his family. Several concerts were forced into cancellation as a consequence.

2005-2008
In 2005, Soil was in need of a replacement for McCombs. By spring that year, they had chosen New York-based vocalist AJ Cavalier at the suggestion of Damageplan vocalist and Cavalier's best friend Pat Lachman. Cavalier's previous credentials include the band Diesel Machine. In a May 2005 interview, bassist Tim King elaborated on McCombs' time with Soil, his departure, and the band's new chemistry:
:"We had a lot of magical moments on stage. It was always about, for us, the music. Unfortunately for him it wasn't. But that doesn't mean he didn't deliver the goods. I'll give him one prop, he was an amazing singer. . . His voice was amazing, everything else about him sucked. That's all I'm going to say about that. I don't want to talk shit. Everyone has things going on in their head and does things for reasons that they feel is right for them. . . It doesn't matter how big you are, you should always have that fire. Bands that have that fire, that drive, are bands that last forever. And now I feel like the band is where it needs to be and in the right place. We now have five fighters in this band. Although, we were able to keep it up for a long time with the old singer, we still lost out on some really good shows. We had a mini tour with Sevendust. We had a festival with Damageplan. We had a UK tour planned and we had to cancel all that when he quit the band. Then we had to find a new singer, who was actually recommended to us by Wayne and Pat from Damage Plan."<ref>Kramer, P. The original lineup of the band was Ryan McCombs (vocals) (currently of Drowning Pool) Shaun Glass (guitar) (currently of the band Dirge), Tom Schofield, Tim King, and Adam Zadel. Mccombs left in 2004 after the band departed from their label (J Records), to be with his family and later join Drowning Pool , and Shaun in 2007,citing musical differences and to focus on his new band, Dirge. Mccombs was replaced with vocalist AJ Cavalier, also of Diesel Machine.
On July 20, 2005, Ryan McCombs returned to music by joining Drowning Pool as their new lead vocalist. This caused tension between the two bands and bitter comments regarding McCombs' transition. In particular, Tim King claimed on Soil's website that McCombs would "be singing the very songs he hailed as 'average,' " and scoffed, "Drowning Pool can have him. Now we have the better singer and the better band."<ref>For The Record: Quick News On Drowning Pool And Soil, Just Blaze, Interpol, Blondie, Liz Phair & More MTV.com (July 29, 2005). The band released True Self, their first album with Cavalier, on May 2, 2006. The following year, guitarist Shaun Glass left Soil, citing musical differences and to focus on his new band, Dirge Within. In November 2008, Driven Records announced on their website that Soil had signed with them.
The band experienced their highest success with their 2001 release Scars. Their success was helped by singles such as "Halo" and "Unreal".

In late 2007 the band recorded a cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" for free as gift from the band to the fans.
In 2004, the band parted company with J Records after disapointing album sales of their second major album Redefine. Soil

Soil, often typeset as SOiL, is a four piece rock band from Chicago, Illinois, United States. Members currently include AJ Cavalier (vocalist), Tom Schofield (drums), Tim King (bass), and Adam Zadel (guitar).

Soil's success came in 2001 when Pat Lynch of Orlando rock radio station WJRR, played the demo of "Halo" in heavy rotation. A major label bidding war erupted, the band chose J Records (a division of RCA Records). Music industry legend Clive Davis, responsible for signing such acts as Pink Floyd and Bruce Springsteen, signed the band, and stated that "you're gonna be my only rock band for now. You're going to be a priority, and I want to break this band".[2]

History

Soil was originally formed in 1997 by members of death metal acts Broken Hope and Oppressor as a side project to their other band. Soil's first three releases, Soil (EP), El Chupacabra (EP) and their debut album Throttle Junkies, failed to break the band into the mainstream. It was around this time that all the members of Soil left their other bands to focus on Soil as their main project.

The band experienced their highest success with their 2001 release Scars. Their success was helped by singles such as "Halo" and "Unreal".

In 2004, the band parted company with J Records after disapointing album sales of their second major album Redefine. Shortly after, vocalist Ryan McCombs announced his departure from the group. New York-based vocalist AJ Cavalier was introduced on November 15, 2005 as McCombs' replacement.

On July 20, 2005, McCombs was confirmed to be the new singer for Drowning Pool.

On September 21, 2005, Soil signed with New York-based independent label DRT Entertainment. Their latest album True Self was released on May 2, 2006. The album leaked onto P2P and BitTorrent sites on March 4, almost 2 months before its official release. They have released four albums, their most recent being True Self which was released in May 2 2006.

In November 2008 Driven Records announced on their website that SOiL had signed with them as their new label.
