Known for | Abductee |
Jaycee Lee Dugard born May 3, 1980 in South Lake Tahoe, California[1] is a woman who was abducted as a girl from a school bus stop outside of her home in South Lake Tahoe in 1991, at the age of 11. On August 26, 2009, Dugard came in contact with a California parole officer, and on August 27 she was confirmed to be Jaycee Lee[2][3], with a DNA test pending.
Abduction
On June 10 1991, Dugard's stepfather saw two people in a gray sedan, possibly a Mercury Monarch or Mercury Zephyr,[4] pull up to a bus stop where she was waiting and abduct her. Despite an extensive investigation, police uncovered no further information about the abduction.[2] Her stepfather was initially a suspect in her disappearance, and took several lie-detector tests.[5] The case attracted nation-wide attention and was featured several times on the crime-stopping television show, America's Most Wanted.[6]
In 2002, police searched the vacation property of a defrocked priest who lived in the area, but found nothing.[7]
Reappearance
On August 25, 2009, Phillip Garrido brought 2 girls, ages 11 and 15, to UC Berkley to distribute religious literature. A campus officer spotted him and became suspicious, and ran a background check. After learning of his 1971 rape conviction, she contacted his parole officer. At a parole meeting the next day, Garrido brought a woman named "Allison" and the two girls, who turned out to be Jaycee and the two children she had borne with Garrido in captivity. Police believe that it may have been the first time Jaycee had been off of Garrido's property in 18 years. Garrido and his wife were arrested on the spot, and Jaycee was turned over to police. After the woman spoke by telephone with Dugard's mother, Dugard's stepfather said "I would say it's a 99 percent chance it's her." On August 27 2009, the woman was confirmed to be Jaycee Lee.[8][9]
Alleged Abductors
Law enforcement sources indicated that Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 55, of Antioch had been arrested in connection with Dugard's abduction. The same sources indicated that Phillip Garrido was a registered sex offender who had spent time in prison following a conviction for rape.[10][11]
Time as a captive
Law Enforcement believes that Jaycee Lee Dugard was kept in a shed as a sex slave for Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy. Dugard became pregnant several times during captivity, bearing at least 2 children. The existence of those children made Garrido's parole officer suspicous, leading to his capture. [12]
