Now we will move forward until we finally bring all Muslims to pray in Jerusalem.”<ref>[http://inthefield.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/28/resolve-remains-with-the-salaheddin-brigades/ In the Field: Hear from CNN reporters across the globe Blog Archive - Resolve remains with the Salaheddin Brigades « - Blogs from CNN.com<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref>

Hamas rulers on Thursday made some rare criticism of Palestinian rocket fire on Israel, saying now was the wrong time for such attacks. We emphasize also that the security agencies are investigating who is behind such acts," the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry said.<ref>http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1236764171585</ref>

Senior Hamas officials were quoted Wednesday by the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat as threatening that abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit may end up like missing Israel Air Force navigator Ron Arad. "If Israel continues to drag its feet, Gilad Shalit will suffer the same fate as Ron Arad,". The officials also reportedly threatened to capture more Israeli soldiers in order to free Palestinian prisoners. Hamas leader Osama Mzeini, meanwhile, said also Wednesday that the differences between Israel and Hamas over releasing Shalit were over two points: which Hamas prisoners would be released and how many would be deported abroad. And another Hamas official said talks for a swap were completely over, though there may be an opening in the future.<ref>http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1072283.html</ref>

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights publishes a list of Palestinian killed between December 27 2008 and January 18 2009, stating that of those killed, 926 were civilians, 236 were combatants and 255 were members of the Palestinian security forces. Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev disputes the findings. He says Israel is working on its own list and contends that most of those killed were combatants or legitimate targets<ref>http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1072481.html</ref>. It is notable that, by comparing the number of deaths during the conflict with the baseline continuous death rate, one can conclude that the continuous death rate over all of Gaza increased to 1.3 times its original value during Operation Cast Lead. <ref>http://www.pchrgaza.org/files/PressR/arabic/2008/list.pdf</ref><ref>https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/gz.html</ref> Concurrently, a United Nations human rights investigator says that Israel's offensive against Hamas in densely populated Gaza appeared to constitute a war crime of the "greatest magnitude."<ref>http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1072481.html</ref>

Israel has made a new offer for a prisoner swap for kidnapped Israeli soldier [[Gilad Shalit]], a senior Hamas official in Gaza, Osama al-Muzaini, said Thursday.
Israel says it has agreed to release 325 of the 450 prisoners Hamas has demanded by name, but is unwilling to release the remaining 125. It is therefore insisting that Hamas present a new list of names from which Jerusalem could choose the remaining 125 to round out the total, to which it has already agreed.
A senior Israeli source involved in the talks said that Hamas prisoners in Israel - particularly those from the West Bank who are expecting to be released in the deal - are furious that the talks collapsed. "They are angry with the Hamas negotiators, most of whom are from Gaza and Damascus," he said.
Despite the latest efforts, Israeli sources doubt an agreement can be reached before Benjamin Netanyahu's new government takes office<ref>http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1074183.html</ref>.

Revision as of 23:44, 8 September 2009

This is a list of rocket and mortar attacks on Israel in 2009 following the Gaza War by Hamas and Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip.

27 January 2009

Palestinians activated an explosive device. The explosive device was detonated against an Israeli army patrol along the border just north of Kissufim crossing about 8 a.m. In the fighting, an Israeli soldier was killed and three others were wounded, according to the Israeli military. About 90 minutes later, a Palestinian was killed by Israeli helicopter fire east of Khan Yunis, near the border fence with Israel.[1]

28 January 2009

After regrouping and retooling, the Salaheddin Brigades make clear that they see the recent conflict as the prelude to a bigger fight they believe they will one day wage. The northern Gaza commander for the Salaheddin Brigades, Abu Jamal, states: “In the past we threw stones and then had small guns. Now we will move forward until we finally bring all Muslims to pray in Jerusalem.”[2] The Salaheddin Brigades is an armed group partially funded by Hamas.

29 January 2009

Cyprus detains a Cypriot-flagged cargo ship, Monchegorsk, in Limassol on suspicion that the ship is ferrying arms from Iran to Hamas fighters in Gaza. On February 10, 2009, Cyprus announced that the ship was found in violation of the UN ban on Iranian arms exports.[3]

31 January 2009

One Grad rocket struck south of Ashkelon after a Color Red alert sounded in the city. The projectile struck an open field in the city. No injuries were reported in the attack.[4]

1 February 2009

Palestinian militants in Gaza fired at least five Qassam rockets and 14 mortar shells at southern Israel.

Two Israel Defense Forces soldiers and an Israeli civilian were lightly wounded four mortar shells fired from the Gaza Strip exploded near them in the Sha'ar Hanegev region of the western Negev.

Three rockets struck the Eshkol region, two of them landing in open fields and the third between two kindergartens. A fourth rocket struck an open field in the Sdot Negev Regional Council area and a fifth exploded in Nir Am, near the Gaza border. No casualties or damage were reported in any of the strikes.

Four mortar shells struck the Eshkol region of the western Negev earlier on Sunday, as well. No injuries or damages were caused. [5]

Later in the day, the IAF answered by bombing a cluster of caravans in Mughraqa, in the central Gaza Strip, that served as a Hamas security headquarters, and two suspected sites of tunnels along the border with Egypt. Phone calls made to Gaza Palestinians warned them to leave any buildings where weapons were located, according to Gaza residents, who also reported that the security headquarters had been evacuated.[6]

2 February 2009

Palestinian militants in Gaza fired at least one Qassam rockets and 3 mortar shells at southern Israel. The Israel Defense Forces said it targeted the gunmen who had fired the mortars.[6]

3 February 2009

Palestinian militants fired a Grad into Ashkelon on Tuesday. Mayor Benny Vaknin told Israel Radio that a Grad rocket "struck the heart of a residential neighbourhood". "To the best of my knowledge, when it's a Grad rocket, it's from Hamas," Vaknin said.[7]

Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the UN's Relief and Works Agency, said Hamas police raided a UN warehouse in Gaza City late Tuesday. "Members of the Hamas police seized by force 3,500 blankets and 406 food packages ready to be delivered to hundreds of poor Gaza families," the statement said.[8]

4 February 2009

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip launched a mortar shell at southern Israel, which exploded in the Eshkol Regional Council. Three people were treated for shock after the attack, which also caused damage to property.

Hours later, an Israel Air Force aircraft bombed smuggling tunnels connecting Gaza with Egypt, as well as Hamas training position in the central strip. There were no casualties in those incidents.[9]

5 February 2009

A Palestinian militant approached the Gaza-Israel border and drew a grenade, as a result of IDF fire and the grenade subsequent explosion, the militant was killed[10].

Hamas stole 200 metric tons (220 U.S. tons) of rice and 100 metric tons (110 U.S. tons) of flour from the UNs Relief and Works Agency. After this event and that of the 3rd of February, the UNRWA said in a written statement that they won't resume deliveries until the stolen supplies are returned, and the agency is "given credible assurances from the Hamas government in Gaza that there will be no repeat of these thefts,"[11].

6 February 2009

Palestinian militants fired two rockets from the coastal strip into Israel. The first of the rockets hit the Sha'ar Hanegev region. Three hours later, a rocket hit near the coastal city of Ashkelon. The attacks caused no casualties. A few hours later, the Israel Air Force answerd by striking targets in southern Gaza. The targets included:

  • Four smuggling tunnels
  • A weapons storage facility, which caused a series of secondary explosions to be heard in the area.

Hamas and Palestinian witnesses said no one was wounded in the IAF strikes.[10]

UNRWA began discontinuing relief supplies "to the Gaza Strip until Hamas returns" the "200 tons of food and supplies" the organization stole from them while interfering with relief operations.[12]

7 February 2009

The Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority's health ministry accused the militant movement Hamas of turning some of its medical facilities in the Gaza Strip into detention centers. "Hamas unfortunately used several facilities, mainly a large number of hospitals, as stations for summons, interrogation, torture and detention,"[13].

8 February 2009

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired a Grad rocket at Ashkelon. The rocket attack on the southern town caused neither casualties nor damage. Earlier that day, a Qassam rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck the western Negev. The IDF said one car was set ablaze and several others were damaged by shrapnel. No injuries were reported.[14]

9 February 2009

Early on Monday, the Israel Air Force hit two Hamas positions in Gaza in response to rocket attacks on Israel launched by militants in the coastal strip on the preceding day, the army said. Later, the IDF said troops spotted an armed militant trying to cross the Gaza-Israel border late Sunday and opened fire, after which a bomb belt he was wearing detonated. Islamic Jihad said he belonged to its armed wing and that he was part of a squad that had planned to attack Israeli troops along the frontier[15].

10 February 2009

"A Kassam rocket struck the western Negev" during the day of the 2009 Israeli legislative election.[16]. Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired the rocket just half an hour before the polls were to close[17].

Amnesty International group on Tuesday accused Hamas of carrying out a "deadly campaign" against its Palestinian opponents and critics in the Gaza Strip. "At least two dozen [Palestinian] men have been shot dead by Hamas gunmen and scores of others have been kneecapped, beaten or otherwise tortured or ill-treated," according to the report.[18]

11 February 2009

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired four mortar shells at the western Negev [some versions indicate only two mortar shells] during the course of the day Wednesday[19]. Israeli warplanes on late Wednesday night struck a Hamas post in the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis. An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said that the strike came in response to mortar fire on the western Negev. There were no reports of casualties in the attack.[20]

12 February 2009

On Thursday night, an Israel Defense Forces unit operating in the West Bank town of Qabatiyeh, near Jenin, found a five kilogram explosive device and a smaller pipe bomb. Border Police sappers safely detonated the explosives[21].

13 February 2009

Two Qassam rockets and a mortar shell fired by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip exploded in the western Negev, causing no casualties or damages. One of the rockets struck an open field in the Eshkol Regional Council and about an hour later another hit near the city of Sderot. An Israeli warplane bombed a target in the Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis Friday, killing one militant and critically wounding another. IDF spokesman said the strike hit two Islamic Jihad militants who were planning a terrorist attack within Israel and that the strike was the result of a joint operation of the IDF and the Shin Bet Security Services. Later, Israeli aircraft carried out six strikes on smuggling tunnels along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. There were no reports of casualties, Hamas security officials and local residents said [22].

Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian teenager who was throwing stones in the West Bank city of Hebron.[23] The IDF reported that dozens of Palestinians hurled rocks at a military guard tower next to an Israeli settlement in Hebron and a soldier shot the ringleader, a 14-year-old Palestinian[21]

Dozens of IDF soldiers, graduates of the Yitzhak Rabin pre-military preparatory course at Oranim Academic College in Tivon, took part in a discussion about their combat experiences in the Gaza operation. Some of their statements raise issues about effect of the terms of engagement on civilian deaths [24]. (The report emerged in the broadcast and print media in Israel and abroad only on March 19). The information, so far does not further clarify the number of civilian casualties reported to be 300 by the IDF[25] and 926 by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights[26]

14 February 2009

On Saturday, a device was detonated near an IDF patrol next to the border, no injuries or damages were reported[27].

15 February 2009

Israel Defense Forces soldiers on Sunday neutralized an explosive device on the border near the Kissufim crossing on the border of the Gaza Strip. The device was presumably to be used in an attack against IDF troops patrolling the area.[27] A rocket struck southern Israel late Sunday night in the Sdot Negev area[28]

16 February 2009

Palestinian rockets hit Israel Monday morning. Two rockets fired from Gaza one hitting an open area in the Sha'ar Hanegev region and the other hitting inside a kibbutz in the Sdot Negev region. No injuries were reported in either incident, but some property sustained damage. IAF jets bombed the Philadelphi route, an area of smuggling tunnels near Gaza's border with Egypt in response to the rocket fire[29].

17 February 2009

The Israel Defense Forces said Tuesday that Hamas has commandeered a large cache of unexploded weapons fired by Israel into the Gaza Strip during its offensive last month. The cache had disappeared while under guard by Hamas officials. UN officials said that they were urgently seeking out the location of the weapons and calling for their return. They said some of the unexploded devices were extremely volatile and could easily be set off by accident[30].

18 February 2009

On Wednesday, a Qassam rocket hit the western Negev. The rocket exploded in a field in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, causing no casualties or damages[31].

19 February 2009

Five Qassam rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into the western Negev. Two in the morning hitting the Eshkol region and three in the evening, one hitting near Sderot and the other two near Netivot. The rocket attacks caused neither casualties nor damage. Shortly afterwards the morning attack, the Israel Defense Forces hit a Palestinian militant attempting to plant a bomb on the Israel-Gaza border, lightly wounding him. The militant, who was hurt near the Keren Shalom border crossing, was later taken to a hospital in Israel for treatment. Israel Air Force warplanes bombed six smuggling tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border in response to the morning rocket fire. The attack caused secondary blasts, according to the IDF, which showed that explosives were hit in the airstrike. There were no reports of casualties[31].

20 February 2009

Gaza militants fired 10 mortar shells and a Qassam rocket into the western Negev on Friday[32]

21 February 2009

On Saturday, a rocket struck Ashkelon[33]

Two Palestinians were killed in strange circumstances. The family sources said Yaqoub and Ahmed Nassar were affiliated to the radical Islamic Hamas organisation but had cooperated with Israeli intelligence until Hamas discovered this nearly a year ago. Hamas had then assigned the two to carry out a suicide attack against Israeli soldiers on the pretext of fleeing Hamas and trying to cross into Israel. Palestinian medical staff recovered their bodies from Juhr al-Dik, a village near the border with Israel in southeast Gaza city. Medical sources had conflicting reports on what caused their death. Some said it was the explosion, but others said the two had been gunned down. An Israel Defense Forces spokesman denied any involvement of Israeli forces in the deaths of the two[34].

22 February 2009

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Sunday fired two mortar rounds at Israel Defense Forces soldiers near the border, Israel Radio reported. Earlier a Qassam rocket hit the western Negev. There were no casualties or damages reported in either incident[35].

23 February 2009

Two Qassam rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into the western Negev. One in the morning landed near Sderot and one in the afternoon landed near a kibbutz. Also, "Israeli forces crossed into Gaza and exchanged fire with two Palestinians who were planting explosives near the fence between Israel and Gaza. ... The Islamic Jihad said on its Web site that the attack was planned to kidnap soldiers."[36] Gunmen shot and wounded a 21-year-old Egyptian policeman guarding a warehouse of goods seized en route to tunnels near the Gaza border. The gunmen escaped but police assume they are smugglers[37]

25 February 2009

Two Qassam rockets struck the Sha'ar Hanegev region in the western Negev on Wednesday. There were no reports of casualties in either incident. As a response, Israel Air Force bombed smuggling tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border. There were secondary explosions, showing they contained weapons material.[38]

26 February 2009

Three Qassam rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip. One of the rockets damaged two houses in Sderot early in the morning and the other "landed near an industrial zone .... A woman and her son were treated for shock."[39] "In the evening," a rocket "struck an open field in the Eshkol Region."[40]

27 February 2009

Two Qassam rockets were fired from Gaza. One struck the western Negev while the other hit the Sdot Hanegev area. No casualties or damage were reported in the incidents.[41]

28 February 2009

Ten rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Six rockets targeted Gaza-area communities, two hit Ashkelon, one landed in the Eshkol district and one near the Sdot Negev area. There were no casualties or property damage, with the exception of one rocket that struck an empty schoolyard in Ashkelon. The school itself was severely damaged, with shrapnel hitting some of the classrooms (including areas the Defense Ministry had defined as safe). Several people were treated for shock by paramedics who arrived at the scene. Following the attack, Deputy Mayor Cohen of Ashqelon met with the commander of the Home Front Command Southern District. They decided the school would be closed on the 1st of March, while its students would be sent to an alternative venue. All other schools in the city will function as usual. [42]

1 March 2009

7 rockets were launched into Israel, one of which struck a yard in Sderot. No one was hurt in any of the attacks.[43]

2 March 2009

Palestinian militants fired a rocket into the southern city of Ashkelon from the Gaza Strip Monday evening. No one was hurt and no damage was caused in the attack. In light of the ongoing rocket fire from Gaza this week, the parents' association of the Ashkelon school system announced that they would shut down area schools, as the buildings are not properly fortified against rocket attacks. The parents said that they would go to the schools and physically prevent students from entering the buildings, Israel Radio reported. Meanwhile, Israel filed an official complaint with the United Nations on Monday over the continuing rocket fire.[44]

3 March 2009

Israel Air Force jets bombed six tunnels in the Gaza Strip near the border with Egypt on Tuesday in retaliation for Qassam rocket and mortar shell fire from the territory into Israel.[45]

4 March 2009

The attack continued with three more tunnels were bombed early Wednesday. About both days, the Israel Defense Forces spokesperson's office said that secondary explosions could be seen when one of the tunnels was targeted, indicating the presence of ammunition inside it. Gaza medical officials reported that seven people had been hurt in the attack.[46]

On Wednesday night, an IAF missile attack killed a senior Islamic Jihad militant in northern Gaza and critically wounded another, Palestinian security and health officials said. Islamic Jihad vowed revenge in the wake of the air strikes. The IDF said that the attack targeted senior Islamic Jihad member Khaled Shalan, who had been involved in firing rockets at the southern city of Ashkelon. Islamic Jihad, a smaller faction than Hamas, said Shalan had overseen its rocket launches and other attacks on Israel from northern Gaza. This strike was the second time since the end of Operation Cast Lead that the IDF has conducted targeted killings against Palestinian militants. Palestinian health ministry official Moaiya Hassanain said another five bystanders were wounded. The air strike could signal a resumption of targeted killings against militant leaders.[47]

5 March 2009

Palestinian militants launched a barrage of Qassam rockets and mortar rounds into Israel on Thursday. They fired six Qassams from the Hamas-controlled territory into the western Negev; all struck open areas, and caused no damages or injuries. Two mortar shells struck near the Nahal Oz region, also causing no casualties.

An Israel Air Force strike on the Gaza Strip killed three members of the militant Islamic Jihad, according to medical sources.

Later on the evening, Palestinian militants fired a Grad rocket that struck a synagogue in the southern town of Netivot, causing light damage to the building. The Israel Air Force retaliated shortly after the attack, striking four smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip, the army said. No one was wounded in the rocket attack on Netivot. In a statement issued after the strike on the tunnels, the Israel Defense Forces said: "As the sole authority in the Gaza Strip, Hamas bears full responsibility for all terror originating within its area of control. The IDF will continue to respond to any attempts to destabilize Israel's South."[48]

7 March 2009

At least three rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel, hitting the western Negev. A member of an Islamic Jihad rocket squad was killed and two others were wounded in what a Palestinian medic said was an Israeli airstrike in the northern Gaza Strip. The dead man was identified as Mahmoud Fattouh, 25, according to Dr. Moawiya Hassanain, a Gaza health official. The Islamic Jihad squad was targeted as it fired rockets toward Israel, according to Hassanain and Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmed. The Israel Defense Forces, however, said it did not carry out any operations in Gaza at the time of the incident. After that the Israel Air Force bombed a smuggling tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip as usual retaliation.[49]

8 March 2009

On Sunday morning, militants in Gaza fired four Qassam rockets at the western Negev. Three rockets hit the Eshkol region and one struck the Sdot Negev region. No injuries or damage were reported in any of the incidents, but the early warning siren was not activated, causing panic among some local residents. The Israel Defense Forces reported they targeted a weapons warehouse used by militants and bombed two smuggling tunnels under the Egypt-Gaza border. Hamas security officials said that the warehouse was empty and no one was injured.[50]

10 March 2009

Militants fired four rockets at Israel on Tuesday, the IDF said.[51] On Tuesday morning, militants in Gaza fired two Qassame rockets at the western Negev. No injuries or damage were reported in either of the incidents.[52] Later two more rockets were fired. The Israel Defense Forces says its aircraft hit a Palestinian rocket squad in Gaza just after the militants fired the rockets. Palestinian security says three people were wounded. The airstrike took place in northern Gaza, the most frequent launching area for rockets.[53]

11 March 2009

Israel Air Force jets bombed two smuggling tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip in retaliation for the rockets fired at Israel the previous day. Shortly afterwards, two rockets struck the Eshkol region in the western Negev. The rockets hit open areas, causing no casualties. Later, in the afternoon, two additional Qassam rockets fired from the Gaza Strip hit the western Negev, one of them striking a canister of natural gas in the Sha'ar Hanegev region. The canister did not explode, and no injuries were reported in either incident[54]. Along the day, two Israeli "women were treated for shock." in relation with the rockets[55]

12 March 2009

Hamas rulers on Thursday made some rare criticism of Palestinian rocket fire on Israel, saying now was the wrong time for such attacks. "Regarding the report about rockets fired from Gaza, we emphasize that these rockets have no link to any of the Palestinian resistance groups and are being fired at the wrong time. We emphasize also that the security agencies are investigating who is behind such acts," the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry said.[56]

Israel has agreed to free all 450 of the prisoners demanded by Hamas in exchange for kidnapped Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, and the dispute now revolves around Israel's demand that some of these prisoners be deported rather than returned home, Palestinian sources in Cairo said Thursday[57]

And another Hamas official said talks for a swap were completely over, though there may be an opening in the future.[61]

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades report the killing of 2 militants in a IAF strike. Israeli army does not confirm such military activity in the area of the central Gaza Strip, close to the border fence with Israel[62].

He says Israel is working on its own list and contends that most of those killed were combatants or legitimate targets[63]. It is notable that, by comparing the number of deaths during the conflict with the baseline continuous death rate, one can conclude that the continuous death rate over all of Gaza increased to 1.3 times its original value during Operation Cast Lead. [64][65] Concurrently, a United Nations human rights investigator says that Israel's offensive against Hamas in densely populated Gaza appeared to constitute a war crime of the "greatest magnitude."[66]

The mainstream press in Israel [67] and abroad [68] published the testimonial reports from a Feb. 13 discussion by IDF combat soldiers, graduates of the Rabin pre-army preparatory program, of incidents in which civilians were killed and property destroyed due to what have been called "permissive rules of engagement." These alleged breaches of the IDF Code of Conduct stirred a furor in the Israeli public and the print and broadcast media, while the Military Advocate-General has launched investigations[69].

The IDF's Coordination and Liaison Authority for the Gaza Strip, is summarizing a list of casualties significantly different from the one published the 20th by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. 1370 fatalities are listed, more than 600 identified as members of a militant organization, 309 described as "uninvoved", 320 for which the IDF has not yet been determined whether they have any affiliation with a militant group and 14 fatalities were members of Fatah whom Hamas executed during the fighting [74].

26 March 2009

Israel has made a new offer for a prisoner swap for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, a senior Hamas official in Gaza, Osama al-Muzaini, said Thursday. Despite the latest efforts, Israeli sources doubt an agreement can be reached before Benjamin Netanyahu's new government takes office[75].

28 March 2009
