Mustafa Kamal is the District City Nazim (Mayor) of Karachi^[1]. A foreign-educated and popular Nazim, Mr. Kamal is one of the better-known members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which is the second largest political party in Sindh after PPP ^[2].

Biography

He was born in 1971 in Karachi,Sindh. He studied in Karachi till Intermediate and left for Malaysia where he completed an Associate Diploma in Business Executive studies. He earned his MBA in Marketing from the University of Wales (UK), while studying in Malaysia. Before becoming the Mayor of Karachi, he served as a minister for Information Technology with the Sindh government.

His favourite actress is Madhuri Dixit as stated on The Tonight Show.

Mayoral Career

Mustafa Kamal is one of Karachi's youngest ever Nazims (mayors).

Since the start of his career, Mustafa Kamal has spearheaded the construction of many educational institutes, parks and roads. He has also courted foreign investors such as Dubai's Emaar to build mega projects in Karachi such as Creek Marina, a large residential and commercial complex along the seafront.

He is widely hailed as one Karachi's most forward thinking mayors. This is reflected in his widespread popularity. His facebook page has over 18,000 supporters, making him one of Pakistan's most popular personalities on the internet. Several international media institutions such as Time Magazine have honored the Nazim with feature length articles.

Involvement with MQM

He has been associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) for more than a decade. He was working as a call operator in 90, which is the main office of MQM in Azizabad, Karachi. He was nominated as Mayor (City Nazim) by the Haq Parast panel, in local bodies election. He won by 1,493 votes against 800 votes obtained by his main rival, former city Nazim Naimatullah Khan, fielded by the Tameer-i-Karachi Ittehad of the combined opposition parties.

August 2007

Residents of Defence Housing Authority (DHA), the most prestigious neighborhood of Karachi, wished to pay taxes to CDGK. They even praised City government's efforts to carry out relief operations in their area.^[3]

The city government has started work on 3 multistoried parking plazas two in Saddar Town and one in Clifton area and these would be unique and one of its kind projects in Pakistan.^[4]

Volunteer service

Mustafa Kamal also set up a volunteer service named "I own Karachi" to motivate youngsters and youths of Karachi towards providing services and helping the citizens. The project "I own Karachi" not succeeded the only intention behind this to mobilize a ethnic class of Karachi for their political motives. The clear example is community police of Karachi, the community police of Karachi is a group of a political workers paid by state. It is the only example in which all the tax payers paying salaries to the political workers.

Achievements

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Geneva has granted ISO certification 9001 to City Government Karachi for providing best services to its citizens^[5].

Mustafa Kamal was praised by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for his efforts to make Karachi a mega city and to carry out relief operations. ^[6]

Foreign Policy hailed Mustafa Kamal as one of 2008's Mayors of the Moment, in reflection of his efforts to revitalize Karachi in the areas of its economy, environment and infrastructure. ^[7]
