The King of Fighters XIII is the latest installment of The King of Fighters series published by SNK Playmore. There was an official preview of the game that was held on March 25, 2010 at Akihabara. The game is also the conclusion of Ash Crimson's story arc which started in The King of Fighters 2003. The game design director, Yamamoto, states that he wants the game to be played by the fans of the series who would be able to use their experience from previous titles. Additionally, however, he does not want the game to be too similar to its prequels, though he and his staff's aim for the game is to capture the charm from previous titles.

Known Info
*Specials can have a "normal" or "stronger" version for each character. The stronger version of special attacks is called EX Special Move and EX Super Special Move respectively. EX attacks can perform tasks such as adding an extra frame of invincibility, boosting the normal attack speed, adding more hits, and can add other factors to a character's techniques. The cost for this technique is a partial drain of their power gauge.
The King of Fighters XII#Gameplay
*A feature called the "Triple Cancel" allows players to unlimitedly cancel their character's moves to their whim. The ability to do so relies on the "Hyper Drive Gauge" that's above the power gauge, gradually draining it as the players cancel their moves.
*"Hyper Drive Mode" is a tricky feature that can only be done once the Hyper Drive Gauge is at maximum. It's possible for players to perform an unlimited amount of Triple Cancels at the precise moment the gauge is filled. Although the effect is short and temporary, the feature allows otherwise un-linkable techniques to be used in one combo. Triple Cancels and Hyper Drive Mode are both callbacks to the system introduced in The King of Fighters 2002.
*When a player is in Hyper Drive Mode and has three power stocks, they can perform a powerful technique or a "Neo Max Desperation Move". Players can also link a Neo Max technique into a combo, which is dubbed "Max Cancel".
*The Story Mode returns with a scoring system. When fighting against a CPU opponent, players are challenged to complete a random objective during stages, or Target Actions. Completing these can award bonus points at the scoring screen. Meeting certain actions can also reward players the next round by filling up their power gauge or Hyper Drive Guage. Objectives include goals such as completing a certain amount of hits within one combo, successfully hitting the CPU with a desperation technique (including EX and Neo Max desperation moves or specials), or being asked to perform a certain attack within 10 seconds.
*A complete story is eight stages, six being spent against other teams and two stages are saved for the finale.
*During a fight against a CPU opponent, players can be awarded a big boost of extra points if they end a match with a Regular, EX or Neo Max desperation move. It also triggers a special splash screen for their victory blow.
*The "zoom" effect as seen in The King of Fighters XII has been removed and the general gameplay speed has been improved greatly.
*Seven new stages have been revealed (two of which being boss stages), with changes to old stages from King of Fighters XII and gimmicks are listed below as follows:
**Japan stage - In front, sumo wrestlers with the Miyajima island in the background.
**India stage - Yellow colored stage, beautifully animated 3D Elephants and the Taj Mahal in the background.
**Britain stage - 1994 type Britain stage with the Big Ben in the background. The weather starts off foggy, but sun shines by the fourth round.
**Brazil stage - Lush-green colored jungle stage that was intended to be in The King of Fighters XII. Hard falls cause objects such as fruits or snakes to fall from the trees.
**Egypt stage - Now green/yellow colored in what appears to be an indoor palace. Green light reflects off of players when the stage's fires are lit.
**China stage - Night time setting with glowing amber lamps. A hard fall on the side of the stage causes a dog to jump out and bark.
**France stage - Sunset setting with the Arc de Triumph and the Eiffel tower in the background.
**America stage - Area above a city with speakers, monitors, and caution tape scattered around; a red, white, and blue sign reading THE KING OF FIGHTERS sits above the fighting area. A cage drops in the background in some rounds, and various floats can be seen in the sky.
**Rose Stadium - Orange/brown colored coliseum with a blue rose bed in the middle and some castles in the background.
**BOSS STAGE: Destroyed Rose Stadium - The coliseum and castles have been destroyed, and the ground is covered in what seems to be cooled magma. Occupying the back of the stadium where the screen once was is a large portal. Above the stadium, lighting and swirling clouds rage in a reddish sky.
**BOSS STAGE: Rose Stadium? - The entire stage is almost completely white, with vague shadows of the foundation of Rose Stadium visible.
*Pre-fight exchanges similar to SVC: Chaos are also present in the game. These unique conversations also exist in mirror matches (when two players play the same character), and they only appear in Single Player mode.
*Aside from the regular team music from the game, you can also listen to themes of characters from previous KOF games, such as Queen from KOF XI for Elisabeth, and KDD-0075 from KOF XI for K'.
*King and Yuri can have their tops ripped off (as seen in Art of Fighting, Art of Fighting 2, The King of Fighters '94, and The King of Fighters '95) when K.O.'d by special, EX and Desperation moves.

Characters
The game removes some of the gameplay systems used in the previous game; the Guard attack system, the Critical Counter system, the Clash System as well as the dynamic, zooming camera. In their place however, there are new systems that have been confirmed to be added, the first of the three is the new EX Mode, which convert each characters' super moves into more powerful versions that allows one bar from the player's power gauge for EX Special Moves and two bars from the player's power gauge for EX Desperation Moves. Another new addition is Hyper Drive mode, which gives the player unlimited use of Drive Cancels for a while once the Hyper Drive Gauge has been maxed, and the last new feature confirmed for the game is the Drive Cancel system, which opens up new combo possibilities. The game also marks the return of the multi-bar power gauge that was introduced in The King of Fighters '97. In addition to standard and EX Desperation Moves, a new class of Desperation Move entitled "NEO MAX" are included in the game and require that three stocks of gauge be exchanged in order to perform one, making it similar to Hidden Desperation Moves (The King of Fighters 2002) and Leader Desperation Moves (The King of Fighters 2003). These can also be canceled from standard Desperation Moves, making them similar to the "Dream Cancels" from The King of Fighters XI.
The entire roster from The King of Fighters XII (including the two console exclusive characters) return in The King of Fighters XIII, arranged in the usual teams of three.

Both Mukai and Botan return. Rose Bernstein returns and is the sponsor of this year's tournament also. All the remaining members from Those from the Past have their faces revealed and are being led by Ash's ancestor, Saiki.

On April 22, 2010, Famitsu reported the addition of two new characters to the game: Vice for Iori Yagami's team and Takuma Sakazaki for the Art of Fighting team. ===Fatal Fury Team===
During intermission screens, a mysterious man who calls himself "Saiki" is seen talking to the other members of "Those From the Past", the organization who has been pursuing the power of the Orochi. Saiki has a similar appearance to Ash Crimson, only wearing a purely white outfit and having his hair untied. Furthermore, the tournament host is revealed to be Rose Bernstien, whose mind is being controlled by Those From the Past (specifically the one named "Botan"). Saiki appears to be the manipulator behind the events of The King of Fighters XIII and the mid boss battle of the game is against his true state (much like previous bosses Mukai and Magaki have human forms as well as transformed states) and his fighting style is a hybrid form of how Mukai and Magaki fight. After defeating Saiki, Ash Crimson will appear as the final boss after seizing Saiki's power, which is similar to what Saiki did to Mukai before the battle starts; and in the final battle, Ash Crimson will be surrounded by black flame and his ability is stronger and more agile than his selectable configuration, also he will use special moves absorbed from Saiki's ability.

The King of Fighters XIII is the latest installment in The King of Fighters series that concludes the Ash saga which started in The King of Fighters 2003. The theme for this title is "KOF-ism" or getting back to the heart of the series. The main objective of the game's new features is to appeal to the audience that prefers quick combos. Eisuke Ogura returns to do the character illustrations.

The game was released in arcades on July 14, 2010. Release dates for the console version have not yet been revealed.
