Founded in 1994, it offers support and funding for art projects that exhibit artistic excellence. The ''Conseil'' supports throughout Quebec the creation, experimentation and production in the realms of performing arts, multidisciplinary arts, circus arts, visual arts, media arts, architectural research, arts and crafts, and literature and seeks to broaden their influence in Quebec's culture in Canada and abroad. It also supports the advanced training of writers and professional artists.
The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec supports, throughout Québec, creation, experimentation, production and dissemination in the realms of the visual arts, the arts and crafts, literature, the performing arts, the multidisciplinary arts, the media arts and architectural research. The Conseil subscribes to values shared by the arts and literature communities that reflect its policy directions:<br>
The Conseil is managed by a board of directors comprising not more than 13 members appointed by the government at the suggestion of the Minister of Culture of Quebec, following consultation with organizations that the government deems to be representative of the arts and literary communities. Board members are taken from the arts and literary communities and come from different regions of Quebec.
* respect for the autonomy and creative freedom of artists and writers;
* respect for the artistic and administrative independence of arts organizations;
* recognition by peers of artistic merit;
* collaboration with the arts and literary communities;
* rigour and openness in methods of attributing financial assistance.

The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) is a public agency founded in 1994 by the government of Quebec (Canada).
