Elizabeth is a suburb in the northern extent of Adelaide, South Australia. It was established in 1955 as a master planned satellite town by the South Australian Housing Trust on 3,000 acres (12 km2) of rural land between the older towns of Salisbury and Smithfield. Elizabeth has residential suburbs (the earliest were Elizabeth South and Elizabeth North) each configured as a local community around a small shopping centre (each originally contained a supermarket, bank, hotel and service station along with other shops), as well as the larger shopping precinct in Elizabeth itself. Major employers such as Holden and the Long Range Weapons Establishment (later Weapons Research Establishment (WRE), now Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO)) moved into the area, and migrants (especially English) were encouraged to settle in Elizabeth and its suburbs.
Elizabeth is home to large areas of open space, with the most prominent being Fremont Park, located on Main North Road.
Elizabeth is the home city of the Central District Bulldogs, an Australian rules football team in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). It is currently the strongest team in South Australian football, having won eight of the last ten SANFL Premierships. They play all of their home games at Hamra Homes Oval (AKA Elizabeth Oval). Elizabeth also has an association football club (soccer) the Playford City Patriots, who play in the South Australian State League. Their home stadium is Ramsay Park in Elizabeth West.
Elizabeth is now part of the City of Playford, the City of Elizabeth having merged with the City of Munno Para in 1997.
The Elizabeth Shopping Centre (known in the earlier days as Elizabeth Town Centre, originally with open air malls) has been progressively expanded since the 1960s, with a major renovation and extension completed in 2004.
Prior to amalgamation, Elizabeth was the sister city of Fremont, California.[3][4] Lake Elizabeth in Fremont Central Park in the California city is named for Elizabeth, South Australia.
