Team StarKid is a completely student built theatre production troop based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 2007, the founders, Matt Lang, Nick Lang, Brian Holden and Erik Kahn Gale working with Basement Arts the student-run theatre group that puts on 5-7 performances each semester [5]. At the time all of the members were students at the University of Michigan. They wrote the script and music as well as performed their most popular work "A Very Potter Musical" and since have written and performed two more musicals of which are also very popular on YouTube. Their YouTube channel “StarKidPotter” currently has 70,000+ subscribers and their first musical has very nearly at two and a half million views to date.[1]

History

Their first project was called “Little White Lie”[2] which they had created to submit for a competition on SOAPnet. They won and continued to film the online video series with the earnings they received from the competition. After filming Little White Lie the character Toby Phillips played by actor Darren Criss had gotten really involved with acting and writing music for the show which led him to collaborate with Team StarKid and become the beginning of what is essentially an extension of Team StarKid, StarKid Company.

StarKid Company is basically the cast and crew that worked with Team StarKid on their original works after the web series, most of the performers were other students from the University of Michigan. The Walgreen Drama Center[3] is the building at University of Michigan where all their performances are held.Thier home theater is on the North end of Campus: Walgreen Drama Center, Studio 1.[4] This is where many other shows have been performed but not posted on YouTube because they are not specifically made by Team StarKid even though you can see StarKid actors in these other shows. The first musical was performed after the earlier mentioned original members of Team StarKid had graduated with their Bachelors of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance.

In April 2009 StarKid Company performed what they originally called "Harry Potter: The Musical” and posted it on their YouTube channel StarKidPotter[5]. Then it was removed it in late June to edit some mature elements out[6], as well as to rename it “A Very Potter Musical”[7] to avoid any copyright dilemmas. And was re-posted to their YouTube channel on July 5, 2009.[8]

“The Fan Musical is produced and performed solely for the personal, non-commercial enjoyment of ourselves and other Harry Potter fans. It is in no way sponsored, approved, endorsed by or affiliated with J.K. Rowling or Warner Bros. or any of their affiliates”[9]

is their mantra which is stressed at the beginning of both of their Potter themed musicals and on their website[10].
