Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is a 336-licensed bed acute care facility located in Rockville, Maryland. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital provides a range of health services to the community such as high-risk obstetrical care, cardiac and vascular care, oncology services, orthopedic care, surgical services and pediatric care. Opened in 1979, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital operates as part of Adventist HealthCare, a health-care delivery system that includes hospitals, home health agencies and other health-care services. Adventist HealthCare is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland.

Dennis Hansen is President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and joined in May 2006.[1][2]

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is located within a 600-acre Life Sciences Center (LSC), which has Montgomery County’s largest concentration of advanced technology companies including the hospital, Johns Hopkins University-Montgomery County Campus (JHU-MCC), the Universities at Shady Grove and biotechnology companies.[3][4]

As part of the Shady Grove Life Sciences Campus, the hospital established a partnership in 2008 with the Universities at Shady Grove and Salisbury University to offer a bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy at the USG campus in Rockville.[5][6]

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital participates in the annual Frontiers in Science and Medicine Day event, which encourages seventh graders to pursue careers in science and medicine by highlighting the achievements and capabilities of the companies located at the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center.[7][8]

History

When Shady Grove Adventist Hospital admitted its first patient in December 1979, it was located in a “rural” part of Montgomery County, surrounded by fields. With some 2,000 employees, 1,200 Medical Staff and Allied Health Professionals, and 800 volunteers today, Shady Grove delivers over 5,000 babies, treats more than 100,000 emergency patients, offers perinatology care, neonatology services and a pediatrics program.

In 2009, the hospital completed a four-year $100 million expansion and renovation project[9] with an expanded NICU and new Pediatric Emergency Department.

Medical Services

The hospital provides medical and non-medical services for men, women and children. Medical services include pediatrics, bariatric surgery, cardiology, vascular, orthopedics, oncology, radiology, wound care, surgical services, special care services and emergency services.[10][11]

The Birth Center

The Birth Center has private labor and delivery suites, private Mother-Baby suites, and a Level IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).[12] A Level III-B Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides pediatric medical subspecialists and surgical specialists who perform major surgeries for patients with congenital malformations or acquired conditions. A Level III-B NICU is designated for newborns with extreme prematurity, which is 28 weeks' gestation or less, or extremely low birth weight (1000g or less) or severe or complex illness.[13][14] It is staffed by neonatalogists and neonatal nurses.

In October 2008, Shady Grove became the first hospital in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area to offer a Birth Advisor[15] to aid expectant mothers in preparing for their upcoming birth experience. This free appointment with Susan Hine, RN, Birth Advisor, allows expectant mothers a one-on-one discussion with an experienced Labor and Delivery nurse about their individual needs and expectations for their hospital stay.[16][17]

Pediatrics

Shady Grove operates the first Pediatric Emergency Department[18] in Montgomery County staffed with fellowship-trained, Pediatric Emergency Physicians and Pediatric Intensivists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.[19]

Shady Grove’s Pediatrics department also has a designated Child Life Specialist available to help children and their families cope emotionally and developmentally to health-care experiences in a positive manner. Recent additions to the program include a Wii Fun Center from the Starlight MidAtlantic Foundation and Miss Teen Maryland International 2009, Brittany Sullivan.[20][21]

The hospital operates the only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Montgomery County and Pediatric Rehabilitative Medicine.

Cardiac & Vascular Services

In 2009, Shady Grove was designated as a Cycle II Chest Pain Center, the only one in Montgomery County to earn this accreditation.[22]

Shady Grove’s board certified cardiologists, electrophysiologists, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons provide the following cardiac and vascular care.

Cancer Care

The oncology program at Shady Grove is one of 1,400 oncology programs in the country approved as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons.[24][25]

Inpatient Cancer Treatments include diagnosis, surgery, blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, chemotherapy, pain management, sickle-cell crisis treatment, treatment for the side effects of cancer therapy.[26]

Outpatient Cancer Treatments include blood and platelet transfusions, chemotherapy, blood Draws, IV hydration, Infusion of interferon, injection of growth factors such as neupogen and epogen.[27]

Shady Grove Adventist Radiation Oncology Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR).[28]

Other oncology services include Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Prostate Seed Implants.[29]

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital plans to open a Radiation Oncology Center in Germantown, near the Germantown Emergency Center.[30]

Surgical Services

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s 100,000-square-foot Surgical Services Unit is equipped with 16 operating rooms, 22 pre-operation patient beds and 48 recovery beds.[31]

Surgical services include: Abdominal, Neurosurgery, Bariatric, Oncology, Colon and Rectal, Opthalmology, Cosmetic and Reconstructive, Orthopedic (including total joint replacement), Dental Surgery, Otolaryngology, Gastrointestinal, Sports Medicine, General Surgery, Thoracic, Gynecological, Urology and Metabolic Vascular.[32]

Sexual Abuse and Assault Center

Montgomery County’s only sexual abuse and assault center is also located at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's Sexual Abuse and Assault Center (SAAC) expanded its space in 2009.[33]

In 2006, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Adventist HealthCare opened an emergency center and medical campus in Germantown. The 24-hour facility expanded access to upcounty residents of Montgomery County. Other health services on the campus include a primary care clinic and women's health clinic for low-income patients, an outpatient radiology center and physician offices.[37][38]

  • In October 2008, The Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) granted Shady Grove a two-year waiver to perform elective percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).[51][52] Shady Grove was one of four hospitals that was granted the waiver as part of a multi-state clinical study based the health care board’s assessment of its high-quality, high volumes and patient outcomes.
  • Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2010 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry–Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) for Cardiac and Vascular Services. Shady Grove is one of 135 nationwide to be recognized for implementing a higher standard of care for coronary artery disease and heart attack patients.[53]
