"Beautiful People"
Song

"Beautiful People" is a song by American recording artist Chris Brown, taken from his fourth studio album, F.A.M.E. (2011). The up-tempo electro house and europop song was written by Brown, Jean Baptiste, Benny Benassi and Alle Benassi, with the latter two also handling its production. "Beautiful People" is the third single from the album. It was released as a digital download from March 11, 2011.

Critics praised the song's positivity and sound. Following its release, "Beautiful People" peaked within the top-ten in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. An accompanying music video was released on March 22, 2011. It features appearances from several of Brown's famous friends, including Diddy, Bow Wow, T-Pain, Nelly, Timbaland, among others.

Background and composition

"Beautiful People" was written by Brown, Jean Baptiste, Benny Benassi and Alle Benassi, with the latter two also handling its production.[1] It was recorded at The Record Plant — a studio in Los Angeles, California.[1] Before the release of the album, the song leaked online on January 16, 2011.[2] The single cover was unveiled on February 2, 2011, showing Brown strapping a gas mask onto his face as he peers up at the camera. The song's title is spelled out in ransom note style, with Brown's name graffitied onto the bottom right corner.[3] It was released to iTunes Stores from March 11, 2011.[4]

"Beautiful People" is an up-tempo song which generates influences of electro house,[5] R&B,[6] and europop.[7] It is composed of pulsing synths that build under Benassi and Brown's staccato and auto-tuned melodies, as stated by James Dean Wells from AOL Music.[5] According to Rap-Up, on the song, Brown encourages "everyone on the dance floor to keep their heads up and discover the beauty inside."[2] When speaking about the song, Brown told Jayson Rodriguez of MTV News that "it wasn't a selfish record, it wasn't me bragging or boasting or talking about cars or money or girls. It was me being able to inspire people with dance music. We have a lot of tragic things going on and the world needs to come together as a whole and stop the negativity."[8]

Critical reception

The song received positive reviews from critics. Margaret Wappler from Los Angeles Times said it is almost a Kylie Minogue song "with its powdered-sugar synths and dance floor positivity".[9] Jon Caramanica from The New York Times said that "Beautiful People" "has the clanging, swelling synths that are the hallmark of megaclubs."[10] Editors from Idolator were impressed with the song, and thought it was the most electro house song they've ever heard from Brown.[11] Ed Easton Jr. from 92.3 Now said that "Beautiful People" "is a softer and sensitive side of Chris Brown as its lyrics are supposed to be meant to inspire others."[12] Joanne Dorken from MTV UK said that "Brown’s vocals are unrecognisable on this Ibiza-dance scene floor filler, which you can’t help but move to."[7] James Montgomery from MTV News praised Benassi's production skills, and said "It's not a stretch to call "Beautiful People" not only one of the year's most unexpected singles, but also one of the best."[13] Robert Copsey from Digital Spy awarded the song five stars, and called it a "dancehall thumper about equality and believing in yourself."[6]

Chart performance

In the United States, "Beautiful People" debuted on the US Hot Dance Club Songs at number thirty-seven on the issue dated March 12, 2011.[14] In its ninth week on the chart, the song peaked at number two. In Australia, "Beautiful People" debuted on the ARIA Singles Chart at number fourteen, and has since peaked at number seven.[15] It certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), for shipments of 70,000 units.[15] "Beautiful People" also made its debut on the New Zealand Singles Chart at number forty, and peaked at number six.[16] In Ireland, the song debuted on the Irish Singles Chart at number thirty-nine, and peaked at number three.[17] Despite not being released as a single in the United Kingdom, the song debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number ninety-five,[18] and peaked at number four in its fifth week.[18] "Beautiful People" also charted on the UK Dance Chart, where it peaked at number two.[19] For the issue dated May 7, 2011, the song debuted at number ninety on the Canadian Hot 100.[20] It reached number forty-one in its fourth week on the chart.[21]

Music video

The music video for "Beautiful People" premiered on MTV's The Seven on March 22, 2011.[22] It features cameo appearances from Brandy, Tyga, Game, Big Sean, Ryan Leslie, Bow Wow, Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz, T-Pain, Estelle, Teyana Taylor, Omarion, Diddy, Kevin McCall, Nelly, and Timbaland.[22][23]

In the video, Brown is shown riding scooters in the streets with his dance crew The Rejectz, dancing in the car, and hanging out in the studio with several famous friends. The studio scenes also show Brown and T-Pain dancing. More scenes feature Brown in a club with Teyana Taylor, Brandy, and Omarion. The video is intercut with scenes of Brown and Benassi performing at separate concerts. It concludes with Brown standing in front of a wall that is graffitied with the words "Beautiful People".

Becky Bain from Idolator stated that the video was "basically a four-minute statement that Brown still has a bunch of friends on his side."[24] Ann Lee from Metro thought his dancing in the video was "better than his singing but it's still pleasant enough."[25] Tanner Stransky of Entertainment Weekly said the video had a "nice concept", and noted it was "a departure from Brown’s trademark glossy clips".[26] Ed Easton Jr. from 92.3 Now called it a "feel good journey through his everyday life", and said "the visuals [in the video] are supposed to show the human side of Chris and his friends enjoying themselves and leaving the stresses of the world behind to be free from criticism."[27]
