K-143 (Kansas highway)

  • Comment: The thousands of cars every day is a reference to the highway's average annual daily traffic numbers.

Created/expanded by Ks0stm (talk). Self nom at 02:55, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Meets the criteria, since this is the users first DYK nom.Jason Rees (talk) 03:37, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
    • Jason Rees, as the reviewer, did it not strike you that the hook is poor for two reasons? (1) The article title should be piped, not left as "K-143 (Kansas highway)". (2) The hook effectively is "Did you know... that thousands of cars use some road in Kansas every day?" Where's the interest in that? BencherliteTalk 00:37, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
      • I can pipe the link; as for the hook itself, it was the best I could come up with out of what is basically an article on a pretty dull topic...my only other possibility was even more dull. I have to admit though, as a first time nominator I don't see why a highway in the middle of Kansas should be any less worthy of being included on DYK than any other article, and all in all the mentality I'm picking up on that ordinary things can't be bothered with at DYK is really putting me off the whole concept. Ks0stm (TCGE) 00:43, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
        • My criticism about the failure to pipe the hook is not directed at you, Ks0stm. It's an easy mistake to make on your first visit here but one that a reviewer should spot. I'm sorry you feel that there's an attitude that ordinary things are less worthy of inclusion; but as WP:WIADYK says (emphasis added), DYK consists of a series of "hooks", which are interesting facts taken from Wikipedia's newest content, of the format "Did you know that...?" Thus, to nominate something to appear on DYK, an editor must either write or identify new content (see below for what qualifies as "new") and propose an interesting "hook". It is not always impossible to find an interesting fact in an article about an ordinary topic. However, if there's no interesting hook that can be found for an article, then it's not really DYK material... and, well, I'm struggling to find anything that would make an "interesting hook" in your article, as you seem to admit. • Given that DYK has recently been in a bit of a shortage, I don't see the need to reject an article just because the article itself is mundane. That said, the hook does need help. How's this? - The Bushranger One ping only 17:51, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

As a UK editor, I have no idea whether one would ordinarily expect a four-lane divided highway in Kansas to be part of the US National Highway System, and I will bow to the superior knowledge of those with views about such matters. I have no real complaints about the article itself (although I'd be happier if the article didn't depend on a [http://www.ksdot.org/matreslab/pmis/query.asp website search page for eight references) so if Jason or someone else is happy with the revised hook, go ahead.
