Just a bit of good luck, really. I just used the page history to see the IP address he made the edit to [[Wikipedia:Help Desk]] with, and then looked at the contributions from that IP. Fortunately, he hadn't learnt to sign (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>) and so had been doing it manually. He probably didn't realise he was logged out when he made the comment on [[Talk:Karantania]]. - 17:47, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC) [[User:ScudLee|Lee]] [[User Talk:ScudLee|<small>(talk)</small>]]

Gorgias

Hey, sorry to clutter up your talk page like this, but I can't resist: Your username is so brilliant... you're my idol. Jorend 12:33, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

When I close my eyes, I see this thing, a sign, I see this name in bright blue neon lights with a purple outline. And this name is so bright and so sharp that the sign -- it just blows up because the name is so powerful... It says, "DropDeadGorgias."
Uhh, I think that's how I came up with it, yeah... Thanks for the dap, homes. I use the same handle on other boards, and one time someone suggested I use a spellchecker. - DropDeadGorgias 18:46, Apr 16, 2004 (UTC)

I must express as well my admiration for your username. Great work. Adam Conover 03:47, Jul 14, 2004 (UTC)

Copyvio

Well, the existing policy is to list them as copyvios, as I did to Protocol Analyzer (visit for an example). You're right, they're still linked to them (twice actually, once at the page and once at Wikipedia:Copyright problems). On the other hand, I try to be careful about the speedy-delete function. So I figure I might as well go by the book. I'd suggest that you start a discussion about this on the Wikipedia:Village pump--that would be the place to go to start a discussion of how we should handle this. Yours, Meelar 17:58, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Featured article discussion

I know what is expected of my article. However, the problem I have is that you seem to address me like I don't know anything around here. I've been here ten days, and I've written many articles. I have observed many of the discussions around here, so I was not born yesterday. People here like to go, "Oh, newbie, let's go into the newbie spiel!" I hate to go Susan Hayward on you, but I am a person, and I am not interchangeable. I do believe that I deserve some respect. TheCustomOfLife 20:16, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I'm really not sure where this vitriol is coming from, but I don't mean to patronize you either. Unfortunately, the impersonal nature of Wikipedia's conversations limits my knowledge of you to your handle; I didn't know that you were a "newbie" at all until you told me. The only reason I said the "look at other posts here" is because you seemed to be taking the conversation really personally, and the featured article page isn't meant to stir up that kind of antagonism. I also don't see where I didn't pay you the proper respect, but if I have offended you somehow, I'm sorry, and I did not intend to at all. When I get home tonight I'll try to write more constructive criticism, with the specific areas that I would change. For now, I suggest you look at other featured articles in the Media, TV, Movie, Game genre, notably DOOM, Batman, etc.
My other advice to you is to not take any of this stuff so seriously. I don't know who Susan Hayward is, but I'm pretty sure you don't you need to go her on me. Everyone on Wikipedia has the same goal, making a great, usable online encyclopedia. DropDeadGorgias (talk) 20:36, Jun 14, 2004 (UTC)

I appreciate the effort, but also feel I must draw your attention to Campbell Soup Company. -- Grunt 00:54, 2004 Jun 15 (UTC)

We've become quite the evangelists for Gmail, no? :-) It's a nice little system. MShonle 06:00, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

What is the policy for dealing with PageRank vandalism?

from the pump

What should be the policy for dealing with articles like Protocol Analyzer (see history)? Right now, we list them as copy vios, and link to the site that they plagiarize. However, due to Wikipedia's high page rank and the many number of sites that clone wikipedia data, this will still allow these vandals of achieving their goal of increasing page rank. It would be more effective to make these speedy deletion candidates. What do you guys think? - DropDeadGorgias (talk) 18:06, Jun 8, 2004 (UTC)

I have no problem with that. Or with some approach where we build the VFD notice without an actual HTML link, so that it doesn't have this effect. -- Jmabel 07:40, Jun 9, 2004 (UTC)
Not a hard thing to fix. Just have people to put the website into the edit summary when marking it as a copyvio, and have the copyvio template tell readers to look at the page history. →Raul654 07:47, Jun 9, 2004 (UTC)
You could put <nowiki></nowiki> tags around the URL to prevent it being a link. Angela. 11:08, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Divs on Main Page Templates

Hi. I was only really joking with my edit summary. The use of the extended image markup looks fine on the template page itself, but when it is substituted into the coloured main page sections, a fault in the extended image markup parser thing leaves white borders around the images (in all browsers, as far as I know). I have prepared an example for you, comparing IE and Mozilla, here. The use of the div system avoids this parsing problem. - Mark 15:23, 30 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I'm not aware of any other locations on WIkipedia which require any special attention with regards to the use of the extended image markup to float an image to the right. As I said, it only causes a problem when the image is substituted into a coloured area, such as on the main page. As for pages that use the old (div) style instead of the "|right" markup, that is likely just a relic from before the extended image markup was introduced a few months ago. If you like, you could convert them to the extended image markup (but this often involves using a large version of the image instead of an already-reduced thumbnail image - and you should get the unused thumbnail deleted). Also note some people fiercely hate the new thumbnailer, especially the way the images get the grey box and magnify icon. - Mark 02:55, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I just saw that you had been fixing the white border problem. Thanks! :) - Mark 09:46, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

How to get images permission

Hi DropDeadGorgias. Last month you contributed to a discussion on the Wikipedia:Village pump about How to get images permission (see [1]). Since there were lots of people with questions, I created a Wikipedia:Finding images tutorial with some tips and hints. Let me know what you think. Thanks -- Chris 73 | Talk 00:10, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Heron Programming Language

Thank you for your comment. For clarification the re-listing occurred, and I got so upset, because only a week previous to this I had received the same level of recrimination and accusations for not re-listing something for deletion. I think someone else got it right in that there is so much policy it's hard to stay on top of it. I still believe my actions were perfectly legitimate, and I'm not about to let these criticisms stop me from acting as an admin for this encyclopedia.

As an aside, a separate user has decided to use the accusations against me in this discussion on another separate issue where an article reached consensus to delete and I did so: I am being accused of abuse of power and this other user has recently taken to launching personal attacks against me. See the entry for Aldeism on Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion and also User talk:Arevich.
