Template:Spanish name César Azpilicueta Tanco (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈθe̞saɾ ˌaθpiliˈkwe̞ta ˈtaŋko̞], born 28 August 1989) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Chelsea in the Premier League, as a right back.

After playing three seasons in La Liga with Osasuna, he represented Marseille in Ligue 1, winning four major titles with the French club. In the 2012 summer he moved to Chelsea in the Premier League for £7 million.

Azpilicueta represented Spain in two Under-21 European Championships, winning the 2011 edition.

Club career

Osasuna

Azpilicueta was born in Pamplona, Navarre, he began his career at the academy of his hometown club, CA Osasuna. He started out as an attacking midfielder, as he was comfortable in possession with a good range of passing, before moving to right-back.[1] Azpilicueta came through the ranks at Osasuna and was handed his La Liga debut on 8 April 2007 in a 2-0 loss against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.[2] he started his career as a midfielder.

The following season, in the 2007–08 season, with the Osasuna squad depleted due to injuries, Azpilicueta established himself as a first-team regular at the age of just 18 and cemented his place in the team at right-back, making with a string of impressive displays. He retained this position for the 2008-09 campaign, appearing in all but missing only two games.

Marseille

Azpilicueta playing with Marseille in the 2009–10 season.

On 21 June 2010, French club Olympique de Marseille confirmed an agreement had been reached with Osasuna for the transfer of Azpilicueta, in a four-year contract for 7 million.[3] With the transfer fee possibly rising to as much as €9.5 million, depending on several clauses.[4] In his UEFA Champions League debut, in a group stage home match against FC Spartak Moscow, he scored the match's only goal, but in his own net.[5] However, his opening season with career with his new club was cut-short, as he suffered a knee injury which ruled him out for the rest of the 2010-11 season.

Following the disappointment of the 2010-11 campaign, in the 2011-12 season, he flourished, performing consistently well and catching the eye as Marseille reached the Champions League quarter-finals, but were eliminated by eventual finalists Bayern Munich. On 27 November 2010, in the early minutes of a 4–0 home win against Montpellier HSC – which meant Marseille climbed to the top of the league – Azpilicueta ruptured the anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee,[6] being sidelined for six months.

In August 2012, amid speculation of clubs showing interest in Azpilicueta, including Premier League's Chelsea, Marseille confirmed that he could leave, saying, "We have three players we have agreed to let leave – César Azpilicueta, Stéphane Mbia, and either Loïc Rémy or André Ayew. If Chelsea makes a fair offer for Aspi [Azpilicueta], we will let him leave. If there is a good offer for Stéphane Mbia, we will let him leave too. We are working in good terms both with César and Stéphane."[7] Later in the same month, he told that his "thoughts split between Marseille and Chelsea" and that if his "departure can help Marseille's finances" he'd be willing to leave.[8]

Chelsea

On 24 August 2012, Chelsea confirmed that they had reached an agreement for the transfer of Azpilicueta, reported to be for a fee in the region of £7 million. He had his first training session with his new team on the same day,[9] and his teammate and countryman Juan Mata described him as a "strong running right back with pace, which makes him a complete player".[10]

International career

Azpilicueta playing for the Spain under-21s.

In 2007, Azpilicueta helped Spain's U19 win the UEFA European Championship. Shortly after, he upgraded to the under-21s, being picked for the 2009 European Championships in Sweden, starting three matches in an eventual group stage exit.

On 11 May 2010, 20-year old Azpilicueta was named by senior side manager Vicente del Bosque in a provisional list of 30 players, in view of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup; eventually, he did not make the final cut.

Azpilicueta was picked for Spain's squad for the 2012 Summer Olympics, after missing out on selection for the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament. He only appeared in one game in London, however, as the national team exited in the group stage.
